What a wonderful chapter - panoramic, broad in scope, yet personal in detail after detail. Condoms in the toolbox, proposals at the baseball game, conversations with bigwigs, and very much more. And wow, did CJ ever tear the Senator a new one. Thanks for whitewater in West Virginia - it's great! Love that idea. In each of these chapters, CJ is becoming ever larger than life itself. I sure hope Ritchie doesn't break himself trying to best his big brother...

Karma, indeed. Scott is not under arrest, though. And with Graham right there, it doesn't seem likely that he will run. The question is what will happen when they reconnect. The important thing is that Graham took the trouble to find Scott. And he stayed to wait. Thanks for reading to this point in the story!

Scott, more than any of us, must get this objectively. Emotionally, with Graham waiting for him at the station, I doubt he gives a damn. He said what he said in order to keep promises to the man he loves. That seemed more important than anything else in that moment. Thank you for your comments, and for reading the story to this point.

I could offer a number of good literary reasons to end the chapter there...but it just seemed right to hold off and wait for another chapter. Graham and Scott reconnecting after the unhappy few hours they've been apart is worth the wait, no? Thanks for reading the story, and for your comments!

Scott probably knows all this as a rational thought. But then, on seeing Graham in the hallway, I doubt Scott is thinking rationally. Scott can only feel an enormous relief and surge of love for Graham right now, and that will probably chase anything else out of his head. Thanks for your acute reading, as always!

Scott shows again how much he has changed, and how much Graham has been a part of that. Scott also knows how dangerous coming clean might be. Right now, all that must be forgotten in the rush of relief at seeing the man he loves; the one he did not expect to see again. Paranoid? Given the revelations in this chapter, Scott would have every right to be.Thanks for reading this far into the story!

From beginning to end, I was riveted. That's Why I Cry is an instant classic to me, and April 14 had my eyes watering. But then, you made me want to stand up with you in April 11. Your poem about rewinding time hit me hard, too. The portrait poem was as good as any painting, surely. April 12 made me chuckle, but April 9 made me want to take a retreat to think. This is wonderful writing.

Just one word can change everything, no? Graham must have plenty to ask and lots to say. But he must have one predominant feeling: relief - or he wouldn't have been there in the first place. You were correct that the police were interested in Scott for reasons beyond his misdeeds. And we know why Ted and the roommate might have failed to pursue Scott after he fled campus. And I have been methodical, haven't I?

Scott felt sick at seeing the photos of Ted and his roommate. I am sure it brought back far more than he wanted to try and process, let alone the idea that he might be implicated in their murders. In this chapter, the changes wrought in him stand out - he values his promises to Graham over his own skin.

Another restorative - what's the word? - rogation - sort of chapter. Liam seems to be soaking up strength from Marty, his surrogate family, from his friends, and from Halifax itself (which I quite understand. I have soft spot in my heart for that city). Of course, it makes me wonder if he will need all that newly stored up strength and steel for something. But what might that be? I am interested to find out...

"Let's go over the timeline again, Mr. Colebrook." Chief Inspector Wayne Lovett sat back in his chair and exhaled slowly. Inspector Vinson sat mutely to the side, yellow notepad in hand. A small recorder sat on the plain, careworn table in front of him. He'd been at the State Police offices for quite a while. They'd taken him, most politely, to a holding room, and asked him to wait. "Chief has to finish with someone. He'll be right in," the man called Snyder had told him.

My hat is off to you, Val! These are wonderful. I am especially taken by the warning poem from Mr. N; it channels a grumpy old man perfectly. Your headline poem sounded so good, I envy you for its simplicity and directness. Your antidote poem made me smile, for I know precisely of that kind of comfort. Wipeout made me cringe and shudder and smile. Your list of mistakes made me wince, though. The first warning poem has a valedictory feel, and could be read at graduations, I think. All wonderful responses to the challenge! -
I agree that the worst thing about this chapter is that for some kids, this is real life, not fiction. Sorry to put you and everyone through it - but just to mention it in passing is too easy, too antiseptic...

The story of a telling one's mother is old and infinitely varied. You tell this tale with sweetness and understanding, and the characterizations are wonderfully entertaining. Tony is a blast to imagine in this situation. And I still want to hear Geoff tell his mother. Well done...

He is callous, certainly, savage..possibly. Reprehensible, absolutely. Right now he is probably nursing his hurt more than anything else.

These were written very close together in time, but were meant to be two separate chapters. You read acutely! Cookie pulled a very fast one, but I can't help thinking that his teaching methods were effective. Wonder how Scott will fare if he goes back to a regular classroom? You were absolutely right that Scott was too consumed by accumulated guilt and self doubt to make any move. Hope you enjoy the chapters which follow.
