It is good to wonder about poor Graham; at the same time, Scott has to be in a complete turmoil. He probably hoped the idyll with Graham would last. Sadly, it didn't. Cliffie? What cliffie? Oohhhhh, that little precipice?

Guilty, as charged. Sorry about that. But there will be more next week!

Scott wants so much to be with Graham that he will do anything - including the raw honesty you speak of - to hang onto that. And he knows that it's not only Graham who changed his life, I think. But then, Marc and Javier aren't in the stateroom with our boys, are they? Thanks so much for your comments!

Your comment shows that not only has Graham gotten under Scott's skin, but that Scott has gotten to Graham, too. Otherwise, given his brother's experience, Graham wouldn't have given Scott the time of day. And I'm sure you're right about Scott as a predator: he threw people away, and found more prey. Thanks so much for your thoughts and remarks.
  5. @AC...this is such a wonderful find! Where was this when I studied Grieg?

"Does that sound like a plan?" Graham was smiling, sitting on a chair jammed into a too-small table with Ellie and himself in the mess area. It was lunchtime, and a scratch meal of thrown-together leftovers had been picked over by the scientific party and the crew. The atmosphere on board the Feigenbaum was a little feverish as everyone anticipated the ship's arrival at Sand River early in the afternoon. Nearly everyone was looking forward to a real meal on shore and looked askance at
  7. You describe love and heartbreak with elegance and economy. You did well to make me so sad. It is a tribute to your skills.
  8. If there is an inner light common to all of us, it surely shone in our friend Skinny. If there is a love to bind us all together, it dwelt with us in him. And even if such things be fantasy, the love and light I have read tonight testify to hearts that yearn and tears that burn.
  9. I found one version of this on YouTube labeling it 'Unrequited Love.' I can hear that.
  10. Once again, I am re-taken by your characters and the way you place us in their world. I very much like seeing things from Bailey's perspective.
  11. I kind of felt this one this morning...
  12. And now I have to go and find where I can buy one of these. You sold me! I have made chili and other dried bean recipes before, and all have the underdone bean problem. Ditto my yellow-split-pea soup....

There's a twist. What's Nate doing up at that hour? I like the way you portray Cam's need to be in secret. It is perfect for the age.

Cam is an interesting kid, writing about common themes. And he took the moment to notice Nate. A week of introspection ahead?
  15. Not preachy - this is a cry against the insanity of inhumanity. We are witnesses, and if we are true to ourselves and our fellow creatures, we will be workers for a better world. You say this far more eloquently than I can hope to.
  16. Quite a brawl for poor Lazy. You introduce your cast of characters simply and delightfully.
  17. Such a sad song, and not in the sea-shanty genre. Thank you for sharing this.

    Chapter 6

Watching Declan's mind and heart change is a wonderful thing. You depict it so very, very, well.

    Seductress

I felt quite taken by this poem, as in taken in and convinced...seduced. A perfect title.

    Chapter 12

Many other readers have commented on the healthy, constructive nature of the conversation depicted here. I agree. I want to congratulate you on how real, and how natural yiou made it seem. Your gift for dialogue writing shines here. Others have talked about team Alek or team Nathan. At this point, only team Liam matters. It looks like the path imposed by the choices Alek and Liam made is one of casual friendship. The clear implication is that Liam will find romance with someone else. But it does make me wonder how Nathan will fare, let alone Alek. Many thanks for this chapter, which is more real than rosy. That's a good thing.

Another of your lovely, panoramic chapters, and this one begins to paint Ritchie more fully. CJ is certainly working hard at being a great older brother. At the same time, we see CJ and Owen far more closely connected as a couple. The moment on the ride back to DC was perfectly drawn, and memorable. The change of mood to the doctor's office made me smile. We can hope for a glimpse of Ezra, perhaps? Thanks for this chapter!

    Revealed

I was sorry to make you, other readers - and Scott - so very sad. Yet, it had to be done. It shows how much Scott has changed that he knew the truth had to be told. He didn't soften the blow or spin the reality of his past; another man, or an earlier Scott might have done that. Graham, of course, can only have the faintest notion of the change, as you say. Thanks so much for your tremendous encouragement in your remarks and in reading the story.

    Misery

Thanks for this, Gary. This chapter tried to plumb the depths of Scott's misery - and even in that black, black pit, there was something good that he had done. But that spreadsheet couldn't completely counteract the gloom into which Scott descended. Only Graham could change that.

Thank you so very much for your encouraging note. I really appreciate that you have engaged with the characters. Javier is hard to forget, isn't he? It makes me very happy that you are hooked on the story. Who knew we could change our minds about Scott?

I love the phrase 'mess of a man.' Scott certainly qualifies as one. And I am glad you feel happy for Scott, and for Graham, too, I hope. Both seem like men looking for a measure of happiness which has eluded them both. Scott is surely a far cry from the predator he once was; and Graham was quick to take advantage of the opening Scott made in his plea for a chance at life. He pounced. Perhaps they can walk forward together once the voyage ends. Many thanks for your kind words and for reading the story to this point. And no, it isn't the end...
