I am so happy you found the description of casting to be reasonable. I confess to spending plenty of time on research for that. The cast color was irresistible. Rick and Gus seem to be enjoying one another's company more and more, regardless of the circumstances or surroundings. It's hard to realize that we now live in times when anyone can be falsely denounced and dragged off to the bastille, as it were. You're quite correct: our rights are fragile and hard won. Rick isn't letting Gus out of his sight if he can help it. In his view, any kind of time with Gus is time well spent. Perhaps Gus will tire of this, but so far, he has seemed happy for Rick's company. If there is anything Heinrich Senior's constant badgering has done for his son, it's helped him learn to have a long fuse and keep his cool. Someone certainly made a phone call to bring in the authorities, you're right. You're also correct that stranger things have happened in this odd world we live in. I understand your "angry" reaction entirely. Thank you for continuing to read, and for your insights.

I should have taken my heart medication before reading this chapter! Now I fear for Sawyer and Jada and Maddie, let alone Jimmy. I suspect that physically, Fergus is sufficient match for all four of them, plus the dogs. Do not expect me to be patient.

I’m sorry I missed this earlier. Gus was more forward than Rick, but Rick made up for shyness with enthusiasm. For once, the stars aligned for both men, even if they were interrupted in mid kiss. Best of all, there will be more, someday. Thanks for reading, and for your patience.

Please accept my thanks for your very kind words. I will not add to your speculation addiction, but will beg you instead to save your voice. Rick and Gus were having such a lovely day until their untimely dunk in Butternut Lake. Even though Rick feels horribly guilty about Gus’ near-tragedy, both men have edged ever closer through it. Perhaps that’s the best outcome. That you should feel the warm sun and cold lake in these pages makes me smile. Thanks again.

You mean you think the Yankees might possibly lose? It’s a pity Gus and Rick will miss the end of the game, though. Zoltan will hardly be pleased at this turn of events. Add in Heinrich and Rita, and you’ve made up a very difficult batting order to face, with no reliever in the bullpen. Thank you for your observations, and for continuing to read this story.

Gus and Rick have professed to the point at which they are sharing more and more of themselves and their lives. If nothing else, Rick will have wonderful memories of this day, at least until the boat capsized. Your faith in Rick is admirable, given how little he has in himself. Rita is nothing if not good at selling. Heinrich seems to have latched onto her and is sold. Only Rick himself appears to be the obstacle to their plan, whatever it may be. What Jerry may feel will depend on whether Rick feels able to trust him. That hasn’t happened yet. Thanks very much for your thoughts, and for reading!

I am so very glad you took the time to read Andy’s journal and that you stayed with him to the end. What continues to break my heart is that there remain many kids like Andy today. Perhaps, like him, there’s hope for them, too. I am glad you liked the last portion of the story. Those chapters were fun to write. If you find Andy’s story memorable, then my heart smiles. There are a few later snapshots of Andy and Zander, short stories with the word “Observation” in their titles. Please accept my deep thanks for your encouraging words, and for reading the story.

Ritch just got lucky in about a hundred ways, and not just in bed. He continues to make friends and make people smile. He and Edrice rescue a young crash victim, and then he narrowly escapes a worse fate. And at the end, there will be a new car. I’m sad to see the end of Defiant, though, which is almost a character unto itself. Great chapter!- 111 comments

The Golden Fish were meant to be Gus and Rick, who have certainly caught one another. But will they let each other go? Rick feels terrible after allowing Gus to be in such danger. Anything on the horizon must take second (or third) place to Gus’ well being in his eyes. Thanks very much for reading, and for your thoughts.

@weinerdog Rick wants Willy Kohler to be buried, as deeply as possible, and to stay that way. I agree with you that Gus would very likely show a very great deal of compassion, should he ever know what happened to Rick that summer. Gus and Rick have been whisked into the medical system, so their attention may be diverted for a while. Thanks very much for reading this chapter, and for your comments.

That last stanza really got to me. Suddenly, we become an accumulation of things that don't work as they ought to. But the roadmap to nowhere charting where we've been is a wonderful metaphor. Thanks very much for this.

The more they learn about one another, the more Rick and Gus seem happier together. You're right that Gus has already bolstered Rick's confidence and spirits. Rick seems to open windows for Gus, too.
