A good chapter, as always. Just to let you know, there’s another duplicate section, starting where you start talking about being a glass-half -full person. Almost the entire section gets repeated.

Christmas in the eyes of a child. A magical time. I can remember how my brother and I would share our bed on Christmas Eve to wait for Santa (we’d switch each year). It took us forever to go to sleep. And then we always seemed to wake up at something like 5am! We weren’t allowed downstairs until Daddy was ready, so we would have to sit on the top step yelling at him to come on! Of coarse, that was the only day of the year he would have to shave first! Oh, the agony! Mom stood against the wall, silently giggling at us the whole time. He would finally come, but try to get us back to bed. No deal! When he finally got to the bottom, he’d peek into the living room and announce that Santa hadn’t come. Too late. By then, we could get around him and to the glorious pile. I have such wonderful memories of those days. 🥰🎄🎅🏻

Those galiator fights are tough. Swimsuits and evening gowns are especially tough, and then you have to have a special talent on top of it!

I was just thinking about the guys this past week, and, lo and behold! (I cannot tell you how many times this happens. 😉). I’m so happy to see the guys back, especially in such happy circumstances. Welcome back!

Yeah. Those I got. I think it’s more the people like Bob, CC, etc and how everyone is related. 🤪

Man! I am getting totally confused with who is who and how they relate with each other and who belongs to who and WHATEVER! 🤪

H’Rek has started growing up. He is still emotionally immature, like most teens. The Fall, and realizing that D’Gar could have died put things into perspective for him and opened his eyes. D’Gar accepted him and his apology without recrimination. They’ll be fine. D’Gar was taking charge of things because he was following R’feem’s orders and everyone accepted that. He had everything under control and was calmly getting himself and others ready to head to Southern when F’nor showed up. By rights, F’nor should have been in charge because of his seniority and the fact that he was from Benden. He was already a Wingleader at this time, I believe. However, he assessed the situation and realized that D’Gar was completely capable of dealing with it. He asked, and was granted, permission to join the group, thereby putting himself under D’gar’s command. That shows true leadership on his behalf—recognizing the appropriate time to step forward to take charge and the appropriate time to step back and let someone else do it.

Good job explaining the World of Pern to newcomers. Maybe there will be new readers for the approximately 15 books now in the series.🐉

It’s such a joyous time when aa new baby joins a family. Welcome, Little TJ!

Often, when on Search, it is the dragons who usually identify the appropriate Candidates. They constantly notice them and let their riders know, so that they can return at a later time as needed. Dragons tend to think only in the present. They don’t think or remember too much of past events, even in their own lives. They also don’t think of future consequences. It’s almost as if they need the riders in order to temper this to prolong and preserve the species. Rejected Candidates often remain in the Weyr because they find much more freedom than they would have experienced in their Holds or Crafts. Whatever their background, it tends to come in handy and be utilized in the Weyr. Even so, some riders continue with their crafts, like Harpers and Healers. (Sorry. This is a little off-topic. I am probably jumping the gun here.)

I forgot about the fire lizards greeting human birth just as they do lizard/dragon birth. It was how the medics knew a woman was going into labor before she even did. All the fire lizards were perched on the roof of her cottage! Then as the baby was born, they’d all croon! ☺️🐉

That was my question. Which pack? This is his injured mate he is standing over. Of course, his first instinct when ANY other wolves show up is to go into protection mode.

They think they are doing all this with the best of intentions—to get Penn and Nash back together. However, they are acting more like a helicopter family. They need to step back. They can provide opportunities, but let the guys work on it themselves. They were doing that already, until the family butted in (with ❤️).

So sorry to see them go. I’ve enjoyed this story so much. Thank you. I’m looking forward to more of your stories. (No Benny? 😢)

You also have to remember that Benden has been completely alone for 400 turns now, and has been accustomed to making decisions on its own, for its own. There had been no other Weyleaders to consult, so they’ve had to do the best they could. That was one of the reasons they wound up so disastrously understaffed and underskilled at such a critical junction. Some decisions (not F’Lar’s choice) were not good for the Weyr, like the ones that isolated them from the Holders and Crafters. When there was need for cooperation between the three, there was a lot of resentment on the side of the Holders and Crafters, because they saw the Dragonriders as parasites, demanding tithes for their upkeep, but contributing nothing to society. No one believed Thread would come back. The only Crafters who supported them were the Healers and the Harpers. (When will Master Robinton make his appearance? He was a critical character all through this time.) This was one of the reasons F’Lar opened the Hatchings to families, Holders, Crafters and special invitees. He was trying to get the ‘public’ involved in the lives of the dragons. It helped the families to see that their children, who had been Searched, were safe. It also became a point of pride for Holders and Crafters when one of their own was Chosen. It made them more willing to tithe, because now they were taking care of their own. It really helped when, in a few Turns, Menolly showed up with Fire Lizards! 🐉

Yeah. Even after your explanation, it still doesn’t connect for me. N’Bras is 10 years older (although I thought it was only 4 years in the book), but only lost about 4 days according to the Weyr timeline. I guess his mind is just totally messed up. Yes. That was why they put such strictures on Timing. It totally messed up the person in both locations.

Good chapter. But I’m a little confused. How could N’Bras’ mother be dead for 3 turns if they had only been down in Southern for a few days according to the present reckoning? Is it because he had had no contact since he had been Searched?

Yes. It took months of PT before he regained full use of his left arm. He never got 100% of his right. That’s, maybe, 90%.

I was so excited to see the boys et al were back and thoroughly enjoyed reading the chapter. And then I read the post-script. No! Please don’t let this be the end! They’ve just returned after such a long time and now they’re going away again! I wanted to celebrate their anniversary with them because it is the same as mine! June 24! I know you said the epilogue will be several years in the future (hopefully, they’ll have their own Benny), but maybe we can visit them sometime in the future, too. Thank you for such a wonderfully enjoyable story. I always look forward to reading you. Keep up the good work!

I’m so glad to hear you came through the fires safely. You obviously take care of the forest floor near you. (🙄 That was such an ignorant comment. When we heard it, we wanted to scream!). Seriously, you were lucky. Don’t worry about feeling guilty. Help where and when you can. You are a victim, as much as they are. You simply have some better means to help some of your neighbors. I think the rest of the country started getting just an inkling of what you are going through when smoke from the fires actually reached the East Coast a couple of weeks ago. It really shocked people to realize that the haze we were seeing was actually your smoke. It made the fires and your distress truly real.

(Dylan?). That may be, but Jason doesn’t see it that way. He thinks Devyn wanted to play with Elroy and he would destroy the stuffie. Devyn will have to explain when he has the chance.
