I stayed away from the local Gay community center support groups too. Until I attended one. Sometimes, talking about your own experiences will give encouragement to others who aren’t as strong as you are. Even if you don’t think you’re strong. And sometimes, you find out that people who at first seem weak are actually much stronger than you are!
My therapists have wanted me to attend Anger Management groups to help others who haven’t figured out coping skills when they get frustrated. They have so many difficult issues to deal with that would overwhelm even the most well-balanced person and they’re dealing with many of them at the same time! Poverty, mental health problems, addiction, homelessness, racism, sexism, disabilities, sometimes even language.
And when something you do or say helps someone else, it’s a very special kind of good feeling.
