This is an Urban Fantasy, Portal Story, set in the Modern USA. Specifically Washington D.C.

Not all demons are evil, sadistic bastards. Some, like our hero, want change in hell: gardening, a professional work ethic, reading romances. Perhaps, even love.

The protagonist, a centuries old vampire tells us of his death and rebirth into darkness at the age of 17, deals with trying to remember several years of his life that are blocked from his memory as well as coming to grips with his vampiric lineage. ~Where you end up in life is not so important as how you got there~

Prompt pieces in a high fantasy setting:

There is much to unearth from a person's past as you get to know them, especially if they have seen war, the edge of the known world, and lived a full life before you were even born.

There is a town in Sussex where they build fires. Big fires. If you build a big enough fire, stoke and burn it with enough reverence and passion, something might just come back out. Atoki's life is ruined, he would rather die than return home. but a demon comes out of the fire, a new demon; young, innocent, beautiful. It could be an interesting relationship.
