Lyrical Laments - 18. Chapter 18 Wake Up!
***
Wake Up!
I beseech you—can’t you see
Your carefully cultivated fears
Nurtured behind closed doors
Or blatant code
Are levers to manipulate?
Whether by church or state?
Fears, like those that come
In black and brown
Or gaily colored hues
Shades that threaten
To contaminate genes
You think superior
How foolish are you
And your kind
Read your bible closer
And see who attended
Your savior’s birth
See who sat at your king’s feet
And loved him
Forget how his words are twisted
To suit evil
Do you really think He would tell you
One color
Or one love
Is better than another?
Really?
Wake up!
I have news for you
Purity is in the creation
Not the result
We are all imperfect
And as such
We are the same
Brothers and sisters all
If we are fortunate
We matter for a century
A speck in time
Before we return to the ooze
Our common ooze
From which all life crawled
Wake up!
It’s not too late
To think for yourself
To see truth
And not the lies
Used to control you
And suppress others
Wake up—and open your heart
