Security - 8. Chapter 8

I arrived home at nine, tired and hungry. Walking into my cottage, I smelled hamburgers. Looking out at the pool, Bobby was grilling hamburgers. I walked out, “I heard the car and put these on. It’ll take a few more minutes, time for you to shower and get comfortable.” I hugged him and did just what he said, shower, dressed I headed back out. “I made ice tea, it’s in the fridge.”

“You have been busy.nWhile I was in California I ran into an old college friend of mine He said his college might have a scholarship available. Here is his address, suggest you write as soon as you can.”

“Do you think I’ll get it”

“You won’t know till you send him your letter.”

Someone was walking on water.

The food hit the spot, “Bobby I’m going to hit the hay. I’ll see you in the morning if you’re still here. Lock up.” As soon as my head hit the pillow I was asleep. The next thing I knew someone was banging on my door. “Go away”

“Breakfast is ready, get up or I’ll trash it.”

It took me a while to focus, who was that and what is this nonsense about breakfast. As the mist in my head cleared, I realized that Bobby must have stayed the night.

Passing through my bathroom I took the liberty of washing my face and taking care of a liquid urgency. Walking into the kitchen, “Did you stay the night or did you come early?”

“No, I stayed the night I have stayed here ever since you left. Uncle Mark decided to stay an extra day. I told mom you wanted me to look after the place.”

“I’m sorry about your uncle, if you get that scholarship you won’t have to worry about him and his five percent. How do you think your mom is going to feel?”

“She’ll tell me I should go to a school near Uncle Mark.”

“And your dad?”

“He’ll just be glad to see me get an education.”

I smiled as I sat down for a fabulous breakfast. “I haven’t had a breakfast like this since Mom left. Did she teach you?”

“Yes, I asked her to teach me, at first she said she could do it till I told her she could sleep in. She still got up but after a week, she slept in till breakfast was ready.”

“Did you ever make this at home?”

“Only when Mom was away and Dad and I stayed because of the store.”

I smiled knowing what was going to happen. “Did you give any thought to your letter?”

“Yes, I have a draft, do you want to read it.”

“No, I’m sure you said the right thing. This is your letter, if I corrected it or asked you to change something then it wouldn’t be your letter but ours. It must be your letter.” He smiled as he finished eating. I wish I was around when he receives Noah’s response.

I checked with my office to see if there was any news from the Prime Minister. She said that nothing has arrived but Peter is back and is saying he didn’t think we got the contract. There was something about the door security they would probably buy but not the total package. That sounded like Peter. I told her to call me if she heard anything from the Prime Minister and I’ll see her in the office on Monday. Thinking about Peter I’m not sure he’s the right person for the team after I leave. He’s short-sighted, I hope David and Jim can handle him.

I walked to the store with Bobby, he was going to work there today since he missed yesterday. He had to tell his dad about the possibility of a scholarship in California. While Bobby went to work stacking shelves, I spoke to his father, "Robert, are you going to be able to manage the store without him?”

“Well, he isn’t gone yet. I just hope he doesn’t get his hopes up to high. The rejections he received put him in a bad mood. It took a while before he snapped out of it, you being around helped.”

“I’m going to let you in on a secret, he’s a smart kid, when I talked to my friend at that university he felt with my endorsement, he’d be offered a scholarship.”

“When will he know?”

“First he needs to apply, then it will take some time for everyone’s evaluation. If he mails the letter in the next two-three days, he should receive some indication within a week, in time to start if he is accepted.”

“Chaz, you need these.”

“Thanks, Bobby, I guess you should ring these up, Robert. He cooks, cleans, and shops, I’m not sure I want him to go away,” winking at his dad.

The rest of the day, I spent working on a bracelet for Noah. I was relaxed, I have reached a decision and after many days of questioning myself, I know I have reached the right decision. When we finished the Prime Minister’s project, I’ll announce my retirement. Then I can fully concentrate on my security bracelet.

I was very involved in the construction of the bracelet I lost the sense of time. “Chaz, where are you?”

“Here in my bedroom.”

“What are you doing? Do you want dinner?”

“I’m making a security bracelet for my friend. He saw mine and wanted one.”

“How does it work?”

“Well, it is based on your physical attributes. Did you know when you are threatened, your heartbeat increases, and your skin will get wet, perspiration. The bracelet monitors that and when it senses the change, a signal is sent to the police and this is a secret, a loud whistle and bright light shines which you can direct into someone’s eyes. They’ll be momentarily blinded which allows you to getaway. Once the bracelet is put on, you can’t remove it. Other safety items allow you to set it at different levels.”

“Do they cost a lot?”

“Yes, this is gold. If I used a common metal it would rust, gold doesn’t rust.”

“Maybe when I finish college I’ll be able to buy one.”

“Maybe, we shall see. You could put it on your Christmas list.”

“What do you want for dinner, I can cook or we could order a pizza?”

“Hm, let me see, you did a fine job at breakfast, so let’s order a pizza. You can make the order and get anything you want on it.”

Looks like I need to make another bracelet for someone’s graduation.

Hopefully I just missed the part where Chaz ate the hamburgers Bobby had graciously made for him before going to bed. Even though he was tired, ignoring someones very kind gesture of making you dinner and thinking about you would be extremely rude. Bobby seems like a great kid and seems to have a very strong bond with Chaz. Heartwarming!

It’s there, easy to miss if reading quickly.

Chaz looks upon Bobby like a brother maybe a 'son I wish I had'. They are close.

There has been no mention that Bobby actually saw the rejection letters. His Mom wants him to go to a college close to Uncle5%.If there is a rejection letter this time that would raise a red flag. But for the record I'm not saying that will happen.

Except Chas knows that an acceptance letter is coming. So he will monitor that possible issue.

Good chapter I also think that his mother and uncle are involved with the rejection Letters , we don't know if he actually read them or else his 5% doctored them , he needs to get the letter sent to Chaz's address, it is awesome that he can cook he is very self sufficient

Yes, Chaz's mother taught him.  I think grandmothers like to teach young people their cooking skills. mine did.

Why would you want to remove it? A personal security device for someone who is frequently among people that could harm you wouldn't need to be removed. It is removable but it will self destruct. Maybe Chaz will include such a method.

There are many self-winding watches out there that work on the motion of the person wearing them, I am sure kinetic energy might be involved!

An astute observation on Chaz's business...

I think Chaz can handle Peter but not sure about David. Although he and Chaz worked quite well together and I think David was in sync with Chaz.
