By Chance or Appointment - 22. At the Feeder
Seven Haiku from the birdfeeder.
Two mourning doves perch,
Still and silent, as they watch
the early fog lift.
*
From the old lilac
the cardinal frets and cries
about the weather.
*
Chickadees flutter
to remove a single seed
and fly to their branch.
*
A goldfinch alights
and glances around the yard
for competition.
*
The grey squirrel feeds
looking over his shoulder
for the hawk’s shadow.
*
Slate-colored juncos
hop through drifts of spent seed shells
in search of breakfast.
*
Smaller birds scatter
when the woodpecker arrives
to claim the feeder.
Thank you for taking time to watch the winter birds with me.
