the Scuffy - 12. Chapter 12

For the first time when the clock went off, I didn’t want to get up. But work called and it’s Monday. Reluctantly I got out of bed followed by Glen. “I didn’t want to get up this morning for the first time I could remember.”

Glen smiled, “You're really happy?”

“Glen I couldn’t be more happy. You’re still going to marry me?”

“Of course, I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.”

Kev was happy and you could see it. It didn’t take us long to fall into our routine.

“Let’s stop and get a quick breakfast, we didn’t have much of a dinner last night.”

“I’ll be late for work.”

“So make it up at six, stay a few minutes longer. I’ll come and keep you company.”

“Okay, let’s do that. We can stop at that truck stop on the interstate.”

Turns out we were fifteen minutes later than normal. Marge had my coffee and newspaper ready. I got a small frown from Marge. “Sorry, I decided to stop for breakfast. I was tired of sandwiches.” She didn’t say anything but pointed to a board, there were several breakfast selections.

I was lost in my work when Bess brought me a cup of coffee, I looked up and there was Glen standing behind her. Smiling, “I brought lunch” handing me a bag. Opening the bag, there were two baker buns filled with corned beef. “I had a corned beef sandwich, bought the buns at the bakery, that’s my extra corn beef.”

I took out a sandwich, Bess looked at the sandwich. “Have you eaten Bess?”

“Not yet”

“Here take one of these, one is enough for me.” Bess took a sandwich,

“That is a big sandwich, she’ll probably have it for dinner as well.”

“No, take a peak at her desk.”

“There’s a guy she’s sharing her sandwich with.”

“That’s her husband, he works in Investments.”

“So that is where you get your investment information.”

“No, he places orders, buy and sell, he has no idea of the profit or loss resulting from his actions. Bess knows more about what the stocks are doing.”

“Because?”

“She reads my reports which she has to transcribe for the people who need to know but aren’t computer literate.”

“Okay, I’ll leave you to get back to work. If you aren’t at the car by six fifteen, I’ll come and get you.”

I stood up and gave him a kiss, “I’ll see you at six”

I went back to work, Bess came and thanked me for the sandwich and to say she was leaving for the day. Yes, Glen did come to get me.

“I’m sorry, I lost track of time. Bess just left and she usually leaves at five.”

“I think she left earlier, I checked with the guard downstairs. he told me she left about four thirty”

“Let me close up and then we can go home.” Go home, that sounded so nice.

Driving home, “Stella was very pleased with the fish. She appreciated the extra fish also, wait till lunch tomorrow, you’ll get something extra as well.”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know, but when Stella likes someone she manage to give them something.” I knew she would give him a piece of her dessert strudel.

“Should we stop and get something for dinner?”

“No, I took some food out of the freezer, it won’t take long to cook.”

“Look who’s here.”

“Scooter boy?”

“Yep”

“Hi Nicky, what’s up?”

“I asked my friends to a party Thursday.”

“And”

“At first they were all for it till I told them about the rules. I’m not sure there’’ll be anyone coming.”

“Maybe this is a good way to find out who your friends are and who aren’t. A true friend would come regardless of the rules.”

“So you think I should go ahead with the party?”

“Definitely, have you eaten?”

“No”

“Okay, you can cook dinner, Come on.”

I showed Nicky the chicken I took out of the freezer before going to work. “I was going to bake it but you can fry it. There are vegetables and salad fixings in the fridge. Go to it and I’ll help after I change my clothes.”

“I feel for Nicky the way his friends behaved.”

“Don’t worry everything will be okay.”

“Optimist,” I laughed

Changed, a hug, a kiss and we headed for the kitchen. Glen made the salad, Nicky had the chicken under control, I took the package of vegetables and headed to the microwave. Dinner was pretty good. “You know we could get use to this.” Nicky smiled. It felt comfortable sitting here with Nicky and Glen. I was really getting to like him, he was a good kid.

Yes, Kevin loses time. He works alone and gets heavily involved in his work. You'll see he loses time often.
