Drew's Poetry Prompts - 8. Not a Prompt- In Just One Year

This is kind of a free-verse. While it doesn't have any rhyming, it still has a meter.

In just one year,
A bakery spurned a couple.

In just one year,
A clerk neglected her duty.

In just one year,
A state resisted the ruling.

These three were just the few
Of many more who did the same.

But, theirs is the cry of defeat.
As for us? Our victory.

In just one year, love won.

This is the first anniversary of the Obergefell vs. Hodges ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in all fifty states.

Wonderful words and wonderful sentiment. We should always celebrate our milestones, and I have to believe that eventually, love does win over hate. An excellent poem, Drew, and the meter was great... I love free verse... cheers... Gary...

I love when simple words would say best of them. Your poem Drew, simple and full of pride and happiness. It given how the Love get the top hand over resistance.

I love the way that the almost rhetorical opening three lines are balanced (answered) by the last line. Very effective. :)

A wonderful sentiment to express everything that's happened in the past year. I'm glad that you wrote it, even though it's painful to see some of the setbacks we must continually face as a community.
Very eloquent.

Thank you so much Northie! :)It felt fitting to end the poem with those two words, "love won."

Yeah, there were setbacks, but we as a community have overcome a lot, and we'll continue to do so. I think bigots fail to appreciate how steadfast we are in our march towards equality, lol.

Thank you Hunter!

I loved this poem which rings true in retrospect.  I is a great statement of pride and joy.  This is the kind of poems I want to also write.

I hope you can write a similar poem when marriage equality becomes legal in Thailand, Terry.
