Cozy Contemplations - 13. Chapter 13 The Grey

Staying the course....

Cozy Contemplations

Chapter 13 The Grey

A kaleidoscope of colors

Inhabits the world we know

Providing stimulating beauty

Like jewels scattered in the snow

Amongst the riotous hues

Lurks a sad and somber grey

Intent on leaching richness

And keeping happiness at bay

Life gives us many choices

But rewards are best when earned

Our journeys aren’t worth living

If there’s nothing to be yearned

To expect things to be easy

Is to bury our heads in sand

When we feel the grey advancing

We can choose to make a stand

There is no magic little pill

Nor simple answers for our lot

When proverbial push comes to shove

Our meager selves are all we’ve got

For though we wax poetic

There is a universal truth

Time makes us weak or strong or both

While it uses up our youth

We can dip into a well of excuses

For why we’re suddenly laid bare

But the tenet we must cling to is

Those vibrant colors are still there

It helps to write the words. Thanks for reading.

The poem is about sadness and trials, but to me it's also, more importantly about hope.  I think the last couple of lines say it all "But the tenet we must cling to is. Those vibrant colors are still there"

Yup, that's the point of this one. Even though I sometimes can't see the colors, I know the reason why, and I have to trust the world will brighten... and it does... more and more :) . Thanks, my friend... cheers... Gary.... xo

The description of the gray is so apt.  I like how you use the color to dispel the gray, but as Parker said, the gray is still there.  The last line is a beacon of hope.  A mantra to follow when the gray advances.  The colors are still there.  Great job.

I love this poem, yet I also feel that chill grey you speak of. Finding the color can be so very difficult.

At times, very difficult. I'm finding logic can serve as a weapon against the grey, even if the colors are obscured. Thanks, Parker... I'm pleased you liked it... cheers... Gary xo

Thanks, Val.  Yes, this poem is about such hope, and that's why it is in this collection rather than Reflections or Laments. :)  Even If I can't always see those 'colors,' my brain knows they are still there, and that life can be really good. I'm stoked you liked this, sis... cheers... Gary.... xo

The sad thing about youth is that it wears an 'invulnerable suit' which ill prepares the wearer for what Life has in store later on...and despite our best efforts to give a little advice, we often don't get through.  In later years, how many of us slap ourselves on the forehead and admit 'Shit--they were right!'?

The drive to assist the next group of youths is thus born, and in our zeal we forget that our own shields at that time withstood all efforts at being breached unless we had very astute commanders in our heads.

Where is our usb cable to upload our experience directly to bypass the 'bullshit' filters kids have so often?  If they could only see directly for themselves what is going on, we would get through....

Thank the gods the colors persist too--our task ought to be to impart more of them so they are easier to find.  Paintbrush, anyone?

I am gonna quibble just a bit ... yes, "our meager selves" may feel like all we got but there is oh so much more ... I think you call them family and friends. One man alone can be easily overcome, one man standing among many is a force to be reckoned with.

I did like the flow of expression of your thoughts.

Depression is insidious, but we do have some control if we choose to fight, and I do. I love your last line beyond measure, dear friend. This is where logic plays a part. Even if those riotous colors become invisible, we/I must remember they are still there... as bad as I can feel, they have not disappeared.

I've slapped myself so many times on the forehead it's a wonder I haven't been concussed. :) . In all fairness to youth, they have their own set of troubles to deal with, so their 'invulnerable suits' are necessary equipment... but they need to be built in such a way they last a lifetime... thanks for always getting me, CG, and for the wisdom you impart... cheers... Gary....

I don't see it as quibbling, my friend... you get it... family and friends are some of those colors that can become invisible for a time... and in order to fight my malaise, I must constantly remind myself they are there for me... all the colors are still there. They/you are the reason I'm winning against the grey... I can't do it as an island... thanks, dugh, for all you do for me... your color is vibrant and constant.

The poem is both lovely and inspirational.  As the grey advances and grows darker, I will keep this mantra in my mind.

I will also focus on the many gems in my life that add color, my friends and family included. I also count your stories and poems among the colors in my life. I do feel moving to Thailand has provided me with a much broader and colorful palate of colors.    Thanks for the reminder.

You're welcome, Terry. We all need reminders of what is beautiful about our lives.
