Being Drunk Is No Excuse

Morse looked like a sleepy teddy bear, propped up on his elbows, his head in his hands  He was waiting on the waitress to bring his cup of coffee and a Danish.  He'd just gotten off at the bar, and still had on the black tee shirt and black jeans that the bouncers had to wear.  It was a little after 2 a.m., and he knew Shelly would still have the diner open, so he decided to stop for a cup of coffee before driving the ten miles to his cabin on the lake.

"You look ready to fall over onto the counter and sleep.  Rough night?"  The waitress, Shelly, sat his coffee on the counter in front of him, and lifted the lid of the cake plate, putting the pastry on a saucer, and sitting it in front of Morse.

Morse waved off the fork she started to hand him and picked the pastry up with his big hand, eating more than a third of the pastry in one bite before replying.  "Lenny was short a bartender tonight, so after working the door, I helped Jace tend bar.  It was busy as hell, and we had three fights break out, one of which resulted in one of our bouncers suffering a broken leg when a damn drunk idiot hit him  with a chair.  I could do without all that, but I need the job right now."

"You have your inheritance that you haven't touched.  No, don't say anything until I'm finished.  John left you that money to live on, not to sit in the bank, while you're feeling guilty about his death.  You tried to get him to take care of himself after his heart attack, but he wouldn't listen.  He had a cigarette in his hand when he died.  You had done all you could do but tie his hands so he couldn't smoke anymore.  You have your teaching job, and will have to use very little of the money until you get the cabin paid for.  Then you can save.  Be sensible.  You're forty-two years old, Morse.  You have no business working day and night, especially being a bouncer."   Shelly patted Morse's arm when she finished speaking.

Morse and Shelly grew up together, both choosing to stay in their small hometown.  She opened the diner, and he became a teacher, both of them content to be there.  Shelly had three kids, and a dog.  Her husband left after the third child was born, and never returned.  Thankfully, he did send her money every month, to help with the kids.   She'd introduced Morse to John over ten years ago, when John came into town, looking for land to buy for a huge real estate project that his company was overseeing.  The two hit it off, and John never left the small town, doing business from home, traveling when it was absolutely necessary.

Shelly refilled Morse's cup, glancing up when the bell on the door rang, as two men walked into the diner.  They settled into one of the small booths.  Shelly grabbed two menus and headed to the table.

"Put that son of a bitch away.  I told you not to text on that damn thing when you and I are together."

Morse turned on his stool at the sound of the loud, angry voice, and ducked as a cell phone flew by his head, hitting the racks of chips behind the counter, and falling to the tile floor.  He walked around the counter, picked up the cell phone, and walked toward the booth.

"Give me a damn cup of coffee, and this idiot a diet coke.  If he gets any fatter, he'll have to roll in the door."  The tall blond man spoke, not bothering to lower his voice, causing the stocky, but in no way fat man across from him to blanche in embarrassment.

Morse saw the young man's embarrassment, and laid the phone in front of him, turning to address the bully.  "Don't talk to Shelly like that when you order.  Be nice."

"Who the hell do you think you are?  I'll say what I damn well please."  The blond man went to slide out of the booth.

"Buddy, please sit down.  Don't start trouble again."  The young man pleaded with his eyes as well as his words, touching the taller man on the arm to get his attention.

Before Morse saw what was going to happen, the tall man slapped the young man, busting his lip, and causing his nose to start bleeding He then drug him across the table, throwing him onto the seat behind him in the booth.

"Shut the hell up if you know what is good for you.  I'll take care of this."

Morse ducked when the tall man swung, and punched the man in the stomach as he ducked.  He then grabbed the tall man's arm, twisted it behind him, shoving him toward the door of the diner.  Opening the door, he pushed the man so hard that the man fell roughly to his knees on the pavement.

"Send that faggot out here.  He's going with me."  He spat the words at Morse.

"Get out of here before I call the law, and I will tell them how you assaulted the young man.  Now, go!"  Morse watched the man get up and go to his truck.  After the man got in his truck and peeled out of the dark parking lot, he walked back into the diner, and over to the booth to check on the young man.

Shelly stood over the young man, holding a wet cloth to his nose and mouth.  Most of the bleeding had stopped.

The young man pushed Shelly's hand away, and said brokenly, "I don't have anywhere else to go.  He'll burn all my stuff if I don't go back, and everything I have is at his house."

Morse studied the young man for a second and said, "Oh yeah, you have a place to go, and you don't need anything that's at his house, and he sure won't bother you."  Morse held his hand out and said, "I'm Morse Tindal by the way, your new housemate."

The young man slowly put his bloody hand in Morse's and said softly.  "I'm Tracy Dalen, and I owe you.  Thanks."

Letting go of Tracy's hand, Morse said.  "Let's get out of here.  It's almost four o'clock in the morning.  I'll take you to your new home."

As the two men started out the door, Shelly let Tracy get out of earshot before saying softly to Morse.  "There's a reason for everything. Don't over analyze what you just did Morse, just go with the flow."

Please Don’t Die On Me

Sitting here in this Cafe drinking my morning cup of coffee, watching people walk by the big bay window. Like I do every day before I start my morning in my very quiet office across the street. I got up and got me a Danish before I left the Cafe, thinking I will eat it at my desk.

As I was stepping out the Cafe door I heard somebody yelling “Help me, Help me”

I look around to find out what is going on, which when I looked at the corner of the block I saw somebody laying in the street with somebody leaning over the body. I took off running to see if I could help.

I get to where the person was laying and saw that he was not moving. I bent down and picked up his wrist to find that there was a pulse. I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket to call 911. I get them on the phone and tell them what happened. They said that an ambulance was on the way. I look at the guys face and relizse it is Ken. My heart was going 90 miles an hour, I had to calm myself down so I could help him. His leg was laying at an odd angle just knowing that his leg was broken.

“Ken can you hear me, it’s Sam. Come on Ken wake up and look at me.” I took hold of his hand and was shaking it to get him to wake up. “Come on buddy wake up.” When I looked back up to his face his eyes were open. “Hey you are going to be alright, just lay still I have the ambulance on the way.”

“I think I’m all right just let me up please,” Ken said trying to get up.

“No just lay still until the medics get here to look you over.”

I knew his leg was broken so I didn’t want him to try and get up. Medics get there and load him up and take off for the hospital. I went and got my car to follow them. I get to the hospital and wait to see Ken, I look over and see a gift shop and go in to look around to kill some time. I found this cute little teddy bear and just had to get it for Ken. It was a cute little thing with a red bow around its neck. I get back to see Ken and they have got his leg in a cast, I see some cuts on his arms and his cheek. I walk in the room and hand him the teddy bear and he just smiles at me and says “Thanks babe I love You”
