Weekly Wrap Up (Jul. 7 - Jul. -13)

So I was down at the Stampede tonight to about 12:30 am  and I met this nice couple from Australia. I asked if they knew @Graeme, but surprisingly they did not :gikkle:  They decided to come over here for their winter and our summer :) When I asked them where they were from, they said Wagga Wagga, NSW . I thought to myself, self, why does Australia have such funny names? Then I thought it my be Aboriginal names, and who am it to judge? Here in the Great White North, we have Moosejaw, and here's a tongue twister, Saskatoon Saskatchewan :P so do you have any strange named towns/cities in your neck of the woods?

And onto the wrap up, after my strange musings...

Monday, Timothy M. did an excellent story review to hopefully get us to check out another great story here at GA:

 There are lots of places here with long, hard to pronounce Iroquois-based names like Chautauqua  and Canandaigua, and Scajaquada. Not too far away is a town called Chili.  Out of towners pronounce it like the food... but locals know it's actually pronounced with two long i sounds - 'chai-lai'.

You forgot about Gowanda, Skaneateles, and New Berlin (which the locals pronounced New Burr-lin).

Mississauga is just up the road. I remember Obama having trouble with that one. Plenty of native names here interspersed with British and French, but my favourite is not far from you @wildone Medicine Hat.

Lem and Big Bone Lick have got to be twinned.

I lived there for a couple of years :P

Funny how you don't think of it as unusual when you hear it all your life.

When I read it, I thought "what's strange about Mississauga?" :gikkle:  I'm not that far from the Canadian border, so have been hearing it my whole life too.

We have several towns with Native American based names here in Oklahoma. Quite a few are simply tribal names given to the city (Pawnee, Osage, Ponca), then others that really confuse those from out of state, like Tahlequah.

Edit:  we also have Slaughterville -- named for a Mr. Slaughter, and not for meat processing plants.
