David McLeod Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Tchaikovsky's last symphony. I tried listening to this a few months ago, during the fall term I think, and couldn't really get into it. Now, I think it's quite brilliant. In a morbid and depressing way, of course. It starts darkly, and ends darkly. The tentative trumpet fanfare a few minutes into the first movement is echoed by a deeper brass; the higher reeds are answered by the sober oboe; and the timpani drag the brass back down to earth
