how pornographic can a story for gayauthors.org be?

I tend to agree with Mark...anticensorship and asking forgiveness rather than permission. It's important to me that there be a safe place to tell and share these stories. And remember, there are people out there (too darned many of them, sadly) who would find ANY of these stories pornographic, just because they have gay characters.

Take a look at my story "Nathan and David...." There is very explicit descriptive sexual content. I was also explicitly told that its perfectly okay for this site because the erotic content has a purpose... I set out with the artistic intention of displaying sex between two men, and particularly the way their feelings and the way their sexual approaches changed over time. The characters are more than the literary equivalent of stickfigures, they have depth and personalities.

For the purposes of this site, I take the no porn rule to mean no story which is written like a sleezy porn video... ie, the characters have no depth, the dialogue is limited to lines like 'oh yeah you want that don't you, you dirty slut take that like a....' you get the idea, its the stuff you see on nifty and think 'holy jeebus did anyone running this site even look at this before they hosted it? This is the trashiest....." ... thats what we want to keep off this site because its not a good read by any measure. Stories that are gratuitously erotic are perfectly fine its the "stories" that are intended to be nothing more than trashy smut which don't belong.

So with that said... Howie should just take stock of what he's written, consider whether he thinks the erotic content is done in a trashy way or a non-trashy way, and put it up on GA or not accordingly. Frankly, the worst that can happen if he puts it up on GA and someone objects to it... the objecting person can bring it to the attention of the site administration who will come to a consensus at that time as to whether its acceptable. Unfortuantely, instead he's going to post it somewhere else because he's been intimidated away from posting his story and told it doesn't belong here by someone who hasn't even read it.

I agree with Mark and Duncan in this discussion. Sex is usually a very important part of a person's life and it's very natural for an author to explore it with the characters in the story. However, sex just for titilation - JO material - is best posted elsewhere.

I first started at Nifty because, like Duncan, I didn't know about other sites at the time. I've posted all my stories there and have always mentioned the GA URL to increase traffic at this terrific repository of material. Damn, this has just reminded me that I haven't posted my recent novella at Nifty. Gotta get to work
