Tiger Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 I'm sure there are plenty of lovers of intrumental music, from classical to jazz and big band, instrumental music is awesome. This is a place to post some of our favorites. There will be more to follow, but I figured this was a good place to start.
Kev de Cauchery Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Tiger, where's your Tiger avatar. I'm recently listening to Yo-Yo Ma's playing Bach's Cello Solo to help with my writing.
Mark Arbour Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Old surf music is the best. My favorite is "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures
BlueSoxSWJ Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 (best version I could find; they defend their copyright aggressively.)
Tiger Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) Tiger, where's your Tiger avatar. I'm recently listening to Yo-Yo Ma's playing Bach's Cello Solo to help with my writing. Well, I don't always have a tiger avatar. I change them sometimes. I happen to love Yoda, so... Old surf music is the best. My favorite is "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures Oh that is a good one. There's a song I love. And recently I found a video with dance to go along with it. It is Bolero by Ravel. It features a ballerina named Maya Plisetskaya. She's retired and quite old by now. There's a description of what the ballet is about as well. Inside a tavern in Spain, people dance beneath the brass lamp hung from the ceiling. [in response] to the cheers to join in, the female dancer has leapt onto the long table and her steps become more and more animated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aK68IdDuGM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yietPuC8fWE Edited December 28, 2009 by Tiger

GoWithIt Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Ravel's Bolero is one of my favorites, but I have a huge soft spot for George Gershwin. I love Ella Fitzgerald's album of just Gershwin songs, but in terms of just instrumental pieces, Rhapsody in Blue is hard to beat. I will listen to this song while studying and it always just reminds me of the city. Watching people running around Downtown Boston has the same feel as listening to this song. Rhapsody in Blue (The Fantasia Version) Part 2
old bob Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Talking of instrumental music, classical music, just two of them, but they are mixed with choirs, so I dont know if I can bring them here. The first one : Ludwig van Bethoven 9th symphony, a choral symphony for orchestra, four solo voices, and choir with the "Ode to Joy" "Joy, beautiful divine spark, Daughter of Elysium, We enter, drunk with fire, O heavenly one, your holy shrine. Your magic once again bonds together What custom strictly divided, All Mankind become brothers Where your gentle wings hold sway." Listen : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0xPjkBz6I8&feature=related or The second one : The Christmas Oratorio (German: Weihnachtsoratorium) BWV 248,an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach. Listen : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_u70GTpEIA&feature=related or : Why not ?
Tiger Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) I happen to also love Tchaikovsky. 1812 Overture is awesome. And yes, I love Pachebel's Canon in D. Edited December 28, 2009 by Tiger

Y_B Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) I love instrumental tunes, especially piano arrangements. Usually with movies, I buy/download the score before the soundtrack. Here are a few of my favorites: CalikoKat from Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrY5EwPx648 This is a guy who has done piano renditions of hundreds of tunes, varying from popular songs to old classics. I like the smooth classic feel the piano gives to otherwise lyrical songs. I encourage you to check him out if you like this sorta stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLnZ5jcsRpc One of the most powerful and evocative symphony arrangements I've ever heard. The tune is originally from the video game Final Fantasy X. Edited December 28, 2009 by Yang Bang
Tiger Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 I also love Kenny G. I don't know if everyone else does, but I do. He's awesome. Songbird Silhouette http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PsA_haOB3E
Tiger Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 More Kenny G... The Moment Forever in Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHFWqk08tNY
Mark Arbour Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Didn't Kenny G sleep with Mr. Garrison? (Obscure "South Park" reference)
Hoskins Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) (this is also the end track of the movie "Mysterious Skin") Robert Miles - Fable (Dream Version) and I love the dulcimer. Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny - , The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Mason Williams - Classical Gas - there's a nerd fight on Youtube, it shows as Eric Clapton, but it's not) Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells - bong hit anyone? Here's part 2. Edited December 28, 2009 by Hoskins
Kev de Cauchery Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Sorry guys. Youtube is blocked in China. Can't fing links for you. Just a few names here. In the album Windows: Windham Hill 25 Years of Piano, Glory by David Benoit & Jim Brickman Charlie Riley by Babara Higbie Dubuque by Geore Winston Actually, the whole album is very very nice. Also, I found the Vitamin Strings Quartet very nice.
Tarin Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Well, I hate to bring down the mood, but here are my two favourites: Comptine d'un autre
Mark Arbour Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 - bong hit anyone? Chase will pack it, and I get the first one.
Mark Arbour Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 More Oldies/Instrumentals: Theme from a Summer Place by Percy Faith by Paul Mauriat Joy by Apollo 100 (a modern rendition of Bach's Joy Prelude) by the Ventures And finally, this one isn't an instrumental, but it was done to the tune of Bach's Menuet: by the Toys
Guest kayden Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 BAH! How do you embed?! I'm so ashamed. Okay I figured it out. If anyone can make the accordion seem badass, it's Myron Floren, (may he rest in peace...), playing one of my favorite tunes of all time, a gypsy dance called "Csardas", (it gets very exciting!): http://www.youtube.c...h?v=FxkWCGSBZ7c Gotta love the harmonica! Belle and Sebastian - "F. This S." (I censored the title; "F" is for a swear word, and so is "S", so you can use your imagination, but there's no words in this song, and the song is actually very mellow and beautiful despite the title.) A fun, plucky country song (not a video, an mp3 link, you can listen to the full song only once with this link): Diamond Rio - Rural Philharmonic And I'm sure you guys won't appreciate this as much as I do, but how's about a heavy metal rendition of a classical song? (Heavy metal is the new "classical" by the way, with its complex compositions, emotions, etc..) "For the final end we will punish you by playing classical music..." An absolutely haunting, amazing performance: An actual heavy metal instrumental song not originally based on a classical piece, (it's beautiful nonetheless): Dream Theater - Overture 1928 I also really like a lot of movie scores, such as Alan Silvestri's theme for Forrest Gump, John Williams themes for Jurassic Park and Hook, etc. My favorites, though, are Alan Silvestri's theme for the awesome movie "Mousehunt" and Dave Grusin's "Fratelli Chase" from the Goonies!: Dave Grusin - Fratelli Chase from The Goonies Philip Glass' "Anthem Part 2" from Powaqqatsi, (also on Truman Show, sorry no link but it's amazing.) If you like jazz, one of my favorites is . Ah there's a ton more. I just love music!
Kev de Cauchery Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Anyone a fan of Safri Duo? Their 'bangings' are good.
thatboyChase Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Well, I hate to bring down the mood, but here are my two favourites: Comptine d'un autre
