I don't know if I misunderstood, but this made it sound like the love came from the scents or instinct.

No you're right, I did mix up the scents with love in that part. And I guess for the wolves it is a mixture, they are guided by their scents, and their feelings are expressed via scents, both lust and love. But I think Colt can override the scents because he is human, so he is not forced to love the wolves.

 

I'm not sure this made sense...

I get what you mean, but being the romantic I am, I maintain lust/scents/instinct is separate from love for both wolf shifter and human. As JAR said, we'll see in a year or so.

 

(My phone said "in a tear or so". This thing has an uncanny understanding of the Metaverse...)

I slept on it and while I think your analysis is brilliant, I have one thought.

 

Is what a wolf instinctively feels for his Alpha/Meta really love? Isn't it more a sense of duty that is very hard to override? Otherwise, they would not be able to deceive their alpha and Luke might have something to say about that.

 

NO, that will NOT happen.

 

I think the initial instinct is a strong feeling of loyalty which can lead in to respect and 'love' - i.e. very strong (platonic) attachment. And like other feelings that are not nourished it can disappear ...

To me the position of Alpha or Meta (with hopefully loyalty and respect) comes from instinct and/or scent. It does not protect from betrayal.

 

Love is something else, which I think we agree on. Colt having such high walls around his heart would as I see it be scared to love if the person(-s) he loves are not in love but only compelled by instinct to want to be near him. The wolves haven't chosen Colt on their own. That must be terrifying for Colt with his past. He's happy now, but being the logical person he is he already plans for what will happen when it all falls apart and he's alone again. Like always... To not be totally destroyed he feels the need for his walls again.

 

 

I think the loyalty vs. Alpha and Meta is different. The first very hierarchical (respect, duty, loyalty); the second beyond that nearly imprinting. The first is helped by the scents as scents are more important senses than eyes and ears, the second ... well that's the question: does the specific scent cause love/respect/submission?

I can agree that scent may cause submission. Love and respect are to be earned, even among wolf shifters.

 

I haven't done it before, but I suddenly feel it's more appropriate to call them shifters, since they aren't human but not quite wolves either. Their human side has to count for something.

Sure as people patiently wait for Tim's stories. I'm already 50% done with book 7, so 'only' 25 chapters to go. I shall soldier through it ... of course some real life motivation and inspiration might come in handy.

ehhm, I have the feeling JAR was hinting at all the nasty :fight:  which will happen when we get the answers to all these questions a year from now. You know :angry: readers hunting him down with pitchforks and whips. :rofl:

How could you think that? It'll all be happy Hallmark-worthy stories, beds of roses and lots of 'I love you'-holding hands scenes ...

I don't know what stories the boys favour. Blame the femenists! We've fucked up everything else, so why not m/m writing as a pick up?

 

Good. My next projects after the wolves IS actually a feminist novel ...
