Unless I get some Robolove I might post more kittens in camouflage ...

JAR, are you driving Tim out of every forum so he has to go write?

YES!

I've been rereading book 1 and am a bit amazed about the things I've forgotten or missed.

Colt did start out with the now popular attitude "Enjoy it while it lasts". My guess is now he's so emotionally invested he's afraid to be completely crushed if the wolves leave when he's fulfilled his roid purpose.

At the same time, Prime's pack was failing without a Meta. They might be getting bigger, but I doubt they are sucking out his smarts. So I don't see how the pack will thrive without Colt even if they grow really big. They don't seem to get smarter and even if some of the newer inner circle wolves are smart, they don't outrank Prime.

Do for what? Never been into Lowe. Always reminded me of an used Mercedes car dealer

You wrote Robolove. I tried to be funny. I didn't think you were actually into Lowe...

I know I am only early in this story (half way through Book 1) and I could be WAY off base but I have a theory/thoughts about scents.

Quote from Book 1:  "You’re human. You’ve learnt to control your instincts and emotions over the millennia. Us wolves, we just let them out."

This trait in wolves is why I think it could be really bad if the scents disappear.   The wolves are ruled by their instincts and emotions far more than humans.  They admitted as much.  Colt may get horny because of the wolves' scents but those scents don't rule his emotions...if anything he panics and goes completely the other way and shuts down his emotions.  Allowing himself to love the wolves was a difficult decision on his part.  My worry is that the wolves seem to be in a euphoric scent induced haze where they may be fooled by their instincts, lust and desire to have a Meta to believe that they are in love with Colt.  When the scent trip fades, which it might, what happens then?  Colt was going to be attracted to the hot wolves regardless of their scent.  He would have probably fallen in love with the wolves even without the scents if given the same opportunity to get to know them.  The scent was more like Viagra for him than an emotional response.  Colt's scent makes the wolves horny but it also makes them euphoric.  Like an addict chasing that high.  When the drug clears their system will they find they were "in love" with the idea of Colt or Colt himself?  So in my head that might mean that:

Scents = Viagra for Colt; and

Scents = amphedomines for the wolves.

My romantic side hopes that I am wrong and maybe it will be like someone who is hired for a job because of "who they know" but prove themselves to be a valuable employee.  Colt was "hired" as Meta because of the scent thing.  Maybe, just maybe, they recruited him based on his scent but over time will fall in love with him for real?

Oh LitLover has a point on that I think ... (and in the beginning Colt indeed was enjoying the sex as he didn't think anything would ever come from it)

EDIT: she posted even faster than me ... see above ;-)

YES ... (and Litlover I will remind you of this when you come to book 4)

So, they won't need a Meta in the future? Or how is that supposed to work if everyone suddenly finds it was indeed a drug trip?

I guess we will have to find out when it happens  :X

You know, I knew you would say that. As in all relationships, time will tell.

But I like LitLover's analysis of how the scents act on Colt vs. wolves: lust increasing vs. mind altering ... I think I fully agree. And I think Colt feels that as well that's why he continues to be insecure ...

It's a very good theory. However, I'm not sure I think there really is a difference in what they are feeling. They were all pulled together by scents and the lust they caused in all of them. Colt was no more in love in the beginning than the wolves. They were all horny. The wolves also driven by instinct to protect Colt. Something he in turn tries to do himself by using his brain.

After time, they got closer and through that closeness came feelings. Feelings that now have Colt running scared. The wolves that are closest to him share his feelings. The newer ones haven't got so far yet.

To me the most important clue is the wolves love each other as well and not only Colt. In fact we know Isaac is attracted to Prime and Leo is attracted to Brian. I think there are actually three different factors at play here, and that's why Colt gets confused.

  1. Colt's pack is fated to break the power of Vampires. That's why they are gay and why Colt's semen makes the wolves larger and stronger. It's doping to enable them to defeat the Queens. Once this is fulfilled, his semen will no longer be like roids. So Colt is correct in assuming this drug effect will eventually disappear.
  2. Scents are what defines the Inner Circle, I bet the Alpha normally scents his followers, and Prime did so with Brian and CE, before they met Colt. Once they had a Meta, he was the one who scented the remaining Inner Circle. There is no logical reason for the scents to disappear, because that would disband the Inner Circle. Only the death of the Alpha (and perhaps the Meta) will kill the scents. So Colt is wrong in assuming this scent effect will eventually disappear.
  3. The legends of a Meta does not say (as far as we know) that the pack only needs a Meta for a short time. Just like an Alpha is the leader till he dies, so the Meta would be for as long as the pack exists. In order for this to work, the wolves have to love and respect the Meta, just as the whole pack love and respect the Alpha. Colt does not understand this, but the wolves have no choice but to love him forever, whereas he can control or suppress his emotions.

Is their love less real because it's forced on them by genetically controlled instincts and scents? To me it's just as true as human love and probably longer lasting. But I accept that Colt cannot believe in his continued good fortune. It's sad but understandable, and he hasn't had time to think it through logically. He's ruled by his emotions right now.

I accept if there are other explanations and factors I have missed. But this is how your story has made me think and feel so far.

Off to bed, see you all tomorrow.

Now, wouldn't that be a surprise ending? Everyone nicely paired off and living happy little lives... Ha, ha!

I slept on it and while I think your analysis is brilliant, I have one thought.

Is what a wolf instinctively feels for his Alpha/Meta really love? Isn't it more a sense of duty that is very hard to override? Otherwise, they would not be able to deceive their alpha and Luke might have something to say about that.

you'll  notice I did NOT mix scent with love, this was on purpose. The scent defines the Inner Circle, and you can be there without love or respect (although I think you have to have this initially). Perhaps once the Inner Circle is fully bonded, the scents will slowly fade, but it doesn't seem logical to me right now. And I bet the Alpha can always scent them - Luke knew all about the betrayal of his Beta and CE.

The love and respect HAS to be there for a Meta, because otherwise the Alpha and his Inner Circle would not let him or her rule. There does not have to be sex involved, this only happens in this case because they are all gay, and because the Meta is sexually attracted to his wolves.

But I suppose you could define it as a sense of duty and caring - but the point is what they feel now will go on forever, so if Colt was happy with his life with the wolves, why does he feel it has been ripped away by Leo's words?

I don't know if I misunderstood, but this made it sound like the love came from the scents or instinct.

"Is their love less real because it's forced on them by genetically controlled instincts and scents?"

To me the position of Alpha or Meta (with hopefully loyalty and respect) comes from instinct and/or scent. It does not protect from betrayal.

Love is something else, which I think we agree on. Colt having such high walls around his heart would as I see it be scared to love if the person(-s) he loves are not in love but only compelled by instinct to want to be near him. The wolves haven't chosen Colt on their own. That must be terrifying for Colt with his past. He's happy now, but being the logical person he is he already plans for what will happen when it all falls apart and he's alone again. Like always... To not be totally destroyed he feels the need for his walls again.
