i read the thread and chuckled at Puppilull's concerns about counting syllables .. something i suck at myself.  so i sent her a syllable counter i use when i need one ... she said, i had no idea these existed ... hehe.. yep they do.  i like the one on Poetry Soup.

Is that actually a thing? How does it do with words that have more syllables when written than when pronounced? Like Wednesday?Does it count the written ones or the spoken ones?

Quite.  In fact, I was trying to do a Black Friday parody on 'Twas the Night Before Christmas:puke:    I may try it without the constraints, though.

i used it when i was doing AC's Tanka poetry prompt. not sure i could have done that without the syllable counter.

my opinion is ... if you really want to be a poet, then you need to learn and understand the basics and the various forms of poetry (yes there are thousands, but there are basic forms we should understand).  even free verse has rules.  frankly to me, it is like saying you want to be an Historian, without learning history.   you need the foundation.

my goal is to better understand the process, in order to better appreciate the art

Good morning DiC'ers.

I hope today finds everyone well. I got a few quotes to respond to.

Atop today's grocery list is eggnog. Back on the shelves after being absent for the past year. Tonight, I'll sit at the patio table to enjoy the evening, a dram of dark rum topped by the creamy concoction and a cigar will be the perfect start to the weekend. I'll have plenty if any of you want to stop by for a visit. :P

omg i love eggnog ... that sounds perfect ... well not the smoking for me, but you can ... i'll just enjoy watching you do that.

I love Eggnog, and I have four Cuban Cigars, from Cuba, that needs smoking.

Another one-syllable word - but I've given up on that project - too frustrating.  In general, I fall into the same category as @Reader1810 and @Defiance19.  About fifty drams with dinner will do nicely, thank you.  Unless I've been to my namesake brewpub (Backwoods Boy has multiple meanings) where my mug club membership nets me around 150 drams, permanently priced at $3.50.

I'm bowing out of it too. It's taking too much time, I don't have.

I found an online Haiku counter, that I used for the last crappy poem I posted in the old thread. Not the one I used in my story. I forget what I put in it.

Happy Friday ...  @MacGreg Sir was mentioning  Happy Hour ... i would have loved a glass of sherry last night (i know, i know but i do like it) and so here is the word of the day.  Oh, and i'm not forgetting the ladies, our resident wino's @Reader1810 and @Defiance19 (I am not sure of the drinking habits of @Kitt, @CassieQ or @Starrynight22) or those of our girl-racer @mollyhousemouse .  I know @BHopper2 likes a wee drop as well.  I'm not sure about @Backwoods Boy or @Thorn Wilde either .. but i'm sure they'll let me know.. Anyway.. let's all have a drink later and toast ourselves and the season..

i think a Happy Hour get together tonight sounds good! i'm not feeling well, so maybe some bourbon in a hot apple cider tonight

as for my drinking habits, not on work/school nights, unless i'm allowed as a special thing, and on weekends only if i don't have to drive since Phil can't drive in the dark

i like craft beers, and bourbon mostly, but have been known to put some vodka in an agua fresca or rum in a cola

This goes for all art forms, I think. Learn the basics, learn to understand the rules... and then you can break them to your heart's content. ;)

Thanks, tim. It’s cold in here, too, with so much equipment...

Dram is used in Nordic languages to mean a unit of strong alcohol. Especially in Norwegian, though not so much by younger people. Same as in Scotland; a wee dram.

EDIT: And I very much enjoy a good wine, a decent cocktail, or some single malt whisky.

Thanks Thorn. Now I remember, my Scottish Granny used that word, though that was many years ago.
