Popular Post dughlas Posted December 27, 2018 Popular Post Posted December 27, 2018 So I did something different for lunch today. I usually go to Maggiano's for lasagna, instead I went to McGillin's Olde Ale House. It's Philly's oldest continually operating tavern. Founded in 1860. It was packed and decorated to the hilt for the holidays. Server said it will quiet down again next week. Had fish 'n chips. Nothing spectacular but good and inexpensive. Just under $11 bucks including tax. It's tucked away on a one way back street that looks more like a back alley. Easy walking distance from the hotel and a block past Macy's so I did a bit of shopping on the way back. I just caught the very end of the mid-day organ program. This Macy's is in what was the flagship store for John Wannamaker's. Wannamaker's was Philadelphia's Famous-Barr for those of you who've read @AC Benus's stories. The center court is home to the world's largest pipe organ. Every visit there makes me think of AC and Famous-Barr. There is a three story tall Christmas tree fronting the organ loft as part of the holiday decorations. The lights on the tree cycle from red to blue to purple to green with gold and white interspersed. Truly lovely. 1 6

A bit of a headache but mostly tired from the train trip yesterday and traipsing around Philly today. Not hungry so I've decided to stay in for the night. I'll get my things together for the trip home tomorrow and turn in early. The train leaves at 7:40am so there's not a lot of time in the morning. 4 1

It's good, but stinky. 5

Thank you, Dugh, that's very sweet of you ❤️ It's a pleasure to remember you read the FB tales. You may or may not know it, but Wanamaker's organ has a Saint Louis connection too. It was ordered by the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company to be the largest, most complex pipe organ in the world. It was installed in the Cass Gilbert designed Festival Hall; or put another way, designed to be the centerpiece of the centerpiece building of the World's Fair. I believe daily concerts were given on the organ, and the hall was a concert venue seating 3,500 people at a time. Mr. Wanamaker was enchanted and had the tradition (along with the organ itself) installed in his new flagship store. 5 2
