I landed flat on my back on the sidewalk. He's just so strong, it's difficult to hold him back and on ice, it's impossible. I'm sitting at home nursing a few bruises but it could have been worse. 🚑 Anyone else had this problem with a dog? What do I do, take him to a trainer or can I do it myself? He's really friendly, but a little energetic. I'm tempted to buy a sled and save on gas! Working with a trainer sounds like a great idea. I'm glad you weren't hurt worse 7

I'm glad you weren't hurt worse I agree. Trainers have their ways with our furry friends/families. And if you prefer, the old routine/reward works wonders. Consistency and patience are the keys. 6 1

When we got our first dog, I was comfortable training him, but hubbie didn't think my methods would be effective, so he went to a joint class, teaching both dog and handler. Turned out her methods were very similar to mine. I think hubby learned more than the dog did! Either way hit the local pet shop and get a training cellar suitable to your breed. They look abusive but cannot get over tightened like a choke collar can. My goldens had one with prongs just long enough to get through the ruff of fur. There are ones with shorter for flat haired dogs. They loved to see the "work collars" come out as it meant going someplace they could meet new peeps! 11 hours ago, Dodger said: I was laughing and crying at the same time. I just wish I could have got a picture of the dog's face when I was lying on the sidewalk. He's like, WTF stop playing games. You're supposed to be taking me for a walk, not lying down. No sympathy whatsoever. My horse gets that look every time a student manages to fall off. I say manages because he tries to step under them and keep them up if they loose their balance. 1 hour ago, bignick said: I don't know how I missed that. You were focusing on the V 7

You have to be quick and consistent with a noise of displeasure(like a sharp hiss... something out of the ordinary) when they move out in front of you, and you have to be stubborn. There are some restrictive collars that will help, but I never use them. I carry bait with a puppy... the smell of that keeps their attention on me, and I reward them when they respond to voice... not a pull. If they do get out in front, turn your back and go the other way. They can tend to charge if they know where you are headed, so keep them guessing... do a lot of direction changes and make them think and pay attention to you. Good luck. 5 2
