I used an IBM Selectric for a few years in the Navy to type up radio messages to order supplies. It had some kind of OCR typeface that the radio set could scan to send the radio messages. It also had the interchangeable balls to switch typefaces. It had a ribbon that had whiteout, so you could actually backspace, lol. The problem with this was that it sometimes missed with the whiteout, so you'd have to start over or the radio guys would kick it back. When you typed, it sounded like TUNK TUNK TUNK instead of the normal "clack" you got with a manual typewriter. Anytime you backspaced it went KER-chunka and the whole desk shook lol. If you pulled out a piece of appear really fast it would WHEEEE as the roller spun. So my typing up a message sounded like TUNK TUNK TUNK TUNK TUNKTUNKTUNK...TUNK..TUNK"shit"...KER-chunka KER-chunka KER-chunka KER-chunka...TUNKTUNKTUNK...dammit KER-chunka KER-chunka WHEEE "Screw it I'm going to the bar" Also, backspacing consisted of hitting a backspace key until you got on top of the character you wanted to correct, holding down a button to lift the whiteout ribbon up where the black ribbon usually sat, and typing the character again to white it out. Then you'd back up again, and type the character you wanted. Didn't work for non-mono space typefaces at all. Horrible.

I came out at 15 to my stepmother. She flatly refused to believe it, and forbade me to tell my dad (not like I was going to do that anyway). The issue "didn't exist" for the remainder of my time living with them. When I was 25 or so I came out to both of them and this time I meant it. My dad had suspected it - lack of girlfriends, etc. - and my stepmother felt terribly guilty because she'd denied it for so long. Anyway it all came right in the end and wasn't the big deal I thought it would be.

If you were to rephrase this using the words "passive" and "aggressive" instead of "feminine" and "masculine" it would make sense to me, but it kinda doesn't make sense to me the way you've written it. I know plenty of masculine people - women and men - that are passive while being masculine in the way they act. I also know plenty of feminine people - again both women and men - who are aggressive while being feminine in their behavior. You're right, in that being "feminine" in a locker room isn't seen as "manly". But if a player is feminine in mannerisms, but can run the ball down a field while shoving other players out of the way, does it matter? Tough question, there. I know a guy, 6'4, probably 300 pounds. When I met him, he looked like Chewbacca because of the long hair and beard and the way he stands. Then he talked, and I thought I was talking to Beyoncé. Kind of disturbing, really. Very feminine mannerisms. But he's a good baseball player and a good football player, and yeah, I bet he catches a lot of shit on the locker room until you see him play. But you don't have to be anti-gay about it, unless you think that being gay makes you weak. Do you think you are weaker than a straight guy? I'm not. I think I'm stronger for it. I think that feminine men and masculine women are also stronger, because their lives are tougher in lots of little ways that mine is not (since I'm apparently masculine enough that unless I tell some one that I'm gay, they can't tell). I know some female cops - I'm a friend of the police chief in a neighboring city's and she is a straight white lady of some stature. She's really feminine in a lot of ways but she'd kick my ass six ways from Sunday if I were resisting arrest As a side question: I define "anti-feminine" as "against feminine behavior in men" and "anti-feminist" as being "against the feminist movement". Using those definitions, I think WL was talking about the former and not the latter. Do I have that right? The derail has confused me.

Yep. This article doesn't ...er... dig into the details here - different burial practices were in favor at different times. If there are 4 burials, for example, two of which are cremations and two which are inhumations (burial of the body with or without a coffin), it's often assumed that the cremations happened rather early (before the rise of Christianity) and the burials later (unless the burials aren't oriented east/west). Lots of factors and not much detail in the news article. Still, very interesting find.

One of the issues with GA is that server storage is really limited. So, rather than uploading pics, put them on an image host and link to them from here. The one I use the most is imgur.com. It doesn't require you to log in and as far as I know the images aren't ever removed unless they're illegal or unless you remove them. So: upload pics to imgur.com - it's really quite easy, they have a great upload tool. After the images are up, copy the link and paste it into the image link in the editor.

Now you WAIT just a got-DERN minute. The story is set in July of 2002. You know what a MacBook Air was in 2002? Air. It didn't exist. The Mac at the time had a G4 processor (not even Intel then), was running a cross-breed incestuous, buggy-as-all-get-out operating system - OS X 10.1 ("Puma"). It crashed a lot, needed lots of resources to run damn near anything in "Mac Classic" mode, and looked like this. They were HORRIBLE. Not that the PC was much better, but at LEAST it would be running Windows 2000 (How do I know? Will runs it on his PC. So there). And FWIW, the 2002 equivalent of the MacBook Air is this baby. Meant for a consumer, low-level audience, it couldn't even perform the least rigorous tasks without a kernel panic or a beach ball lasting for hours. SO: Your attempt at trolling fails. Mozilla has a very lgbt friendly culture. And people that use it's products tend to be under 40 - people who are very tolerant of lgbt issues. They also use a lot of developers, mostly younger people as well. They need those developers - they are the engine that makes the company run, in a lot of ways. Eich's views about gay marriage - which he has never denied that he still has - threaten Mozilla's ability to keep the developers. I think that's why he had to go.

I'm running windows 8.1 and it's fine, I've got a start menu replacement running, and with it, it goes to the desktop, no need to use the touch interface at all. And MS is scrambling a bit to find a good way to reintegrate the start menu. It actually improved performance on my 6 year old laptop. I like windows 7 too, but 8 isn't torture. Windows XP will be around for a long time for systems that don't change or don't need the Internet. I have customers that use it in point of sale and shop floor systems that are dedicated to specific software, there's no reason to upgrade those. XP won't stop working, it just won't be kept up to date after April 8th. Don't let vulnerable systems on the Internet and run a good firewall and it will be fine for years to come.

I pretty much treated my high school career like a train in a continuous derailment. Lots of noise and dust and a wreck at the end, did a military enlistment that grew me up (much like college does). Got out of the military, got a decent little job as an inventory clerk at an automotive parts manufacturer, and worked my way into installing and building computers and servers for small business, something I've been pretty successful at for over 20 years, at least. I've spent a good chunk of change learning - probably as much as a college degree, but spent on technical schools and certifications. I am starting another class in a week, because at my age and in my profession, you're "old" at 45 and out of date at 50. I do this independently and I run my own business. I have a select group of small companies - some manufacturing, some more "office" type - but i know a lot of different people who work in all kinds of jobs, in many different industries. I know everyone from the kid on the forklift to the president at most of my clients. Its nice that I know enough to rattle off "how to do x on y computer", but it's also good to know how these places work, and have a bit of a voice in how they spend their money on technology. All without a college degree. Most of the folks I work with, at these small companies - they don't have degrees either. They're press operators, construction workers, pressmen at print shops, they're all over the map. They're good friends with their co-workers, good people to know. Solid, honest people with a good grounding in their families, their friends, their trips to Vegas, their cabin up north. Most will retire from where they are with a 20 year watch and a nice little pension, and then they'll go do something else - one guy retired as a press operator and started an online business with his kids. Can you be successful without a college degree? Absolutely YES. Can you be rich? Sure, but it's a lot harder. Most people don't try (but I do know at least two people that built nice little companies from nothing - one was a landscaper who built his business up and sold it for a few million. Another is a college dropout who went to work in the family business and made it take off. He'll sell it in a couple of years after the patriarch passes - and he'll make way more than a few million. And about that military stint of mine - it's the same as college at that age. It's a grinder - you go and work and party your ass off, and at the end of 4 years, you figure out if it's going to be a career or if it's not for you. But you learn how to be a grown up, and that's what it's about.
