Thanks much for your kind remarks. Pahana's abilities definitely exceed the norms of traditional native cultural beliefs, but you have a good vision of where things are going
I apologize for missing your comments yesterday. Yes, the "multi-spirit" beliefs of indigenous peoples - not only in this geographical area - are highly relevant to this story. Thanks for your observations.
Thanks much for your observations, @Anton_Cloche. I'm glad you're enjoying the story. I debated a ❤️ or a 😆 on your comment, the latter would have been delighted laughter. The song reference is very fitting. Unfortunately, in my youthful haunting of the woods, I never had a surprise like this, so I'm imagining it now
Thanks for sharing that. I like it - and having not seen it before, I did a search. The accompanying corollary is also interesting:
"When the student is truly ready, the teacher disappears."
Thanks, Flip Flop. I'm glad you're enjoying the story. Dallen isn't sure what's going on either. It's a strange path he's on, and likely to get stranger, but a few more clues will emerge soon
The afternoon was windless and warm. The pavement was almost too hot as I walked barefoot to the state park beach. Out on the river, the steady drone of boat motors told me water-skiing was in progress. Laughter and shrieks of excitement from young swimmers filled the air.
The state park ran for a couple of miles along a wide river. The swimming area itself was located in a protected bay roughly one-quarter mile long and a couple hundred yards wide. In the center was a wood diving platform.
Good observations and question, Craig. I'll leave your question as "hypothetical" at the moment since the answers will likely be forthcoming in the next few days
I agree. I'll leave the categories as they are. It is definitely a Coming of Age story and a Romance. It may have fantasy elements, but what defines a "fantasy story" for GA isn't clear to me.
True. I thought about putting this in the "general fantasy" genre in addition to "romance" and "coming of age". What do you think? It's a little hard to categorize.
Thanks for your analysis, Geron. Like readers often do, you have expressed the theme much better than I could have. Yes, Pahana is getting much guidance from many sources, and so far he's absorbing it quite well
Thanks for your kind comments, Flip Flop. Lots of information in this one for sure. Both of Pahana's parents are quite understanding - I wish all parents were that way. I'm glad you're enjoy the story and the cultural information behind it.
Thanks for your observations, Scrubber. Yes, the mystery and mysticism continues to grow. And, as you observed, Pahana found out who gave Tocho has first experience
Thanks for reading and commenting, Jeffrey. An earlier version of this was posted on GA a long time ago but removed because it was inadequate in several ways. This version is expanded and fills some gaps that were left before.
The actual name is the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, just off of I-84 five miles east of Pendleton, Oregon. I renamed it and moved it about 170 miles for story purposes. The exhibits and their emotional impact were as told in the story.

Thanks for reading and for your comment, @NOLARE. I think you'll appreciate Dallen's mother even more as time passes
How long did your mountain lion stick around to be observed? My two were a face in the brush that disappeared immediately, and the other I only saw the backside as he was leaving.
