    I remember a terrifying teacher called Miss Graff in elementary school, she taught maths aided by a cane which accompanied her as she strolled around looking out for victims. Mrs G seems to fit the bill as a reincarnation.

    It’s one of my favourite ingredients as I can’t eat cheese and pineapple helps stop the cheese less pizza from drying out. Pineapple and cooked cheese does sound disgusting, though!

    I don’t get this story. It is probably my fault but there isn’t time to develop things before the horrifying, and well-written, climax. A great idea that doesn’t quite come off, for me.

    Gary L reviewed Bill W's story in Fiction

    A gay detective investigates gay hate crimes. It’s told in the first person which is both it’s strength and weakness. The storyline is very good, the twist is excellent but some may find the style a bit staid whilst others will love it. This is one to divide the critics. It could have made an excellent series with character developments and less narrative of events. Still very worth a try.

    A tad too trusting me thinks…….. remember this is the Mark Arbour who doesn’t let our feelings get in the way of a bit of drama, cliffhangers, bombs, drugs, etc etc. let’s hope his Sauron’s eye doesn’t turn to their house in Boston ……

    I agree with both mrsG and James C. The plot was excellent and could have been the basis for a long series. But the style didn’t do it for me. Sorry

    So much emotionally gripping writing in such a short piece is a sign of a high quality author. This ticks all the boxes for a great read and leaves you desperate for more, easily 5*****

    The ending did seem rushed and many of the comments indicate some confusion. That said, there is some great writing here and Jo Jo and the horse meeting was v moving. All in all, an intriguing piece with capacity for a series. ??

    When you know that you were the one, not even dementia can take that away. this is a truly exquisite piece of prose. Like others I think of possible names for our secret author but until we know their name all I can do is say read this, she’d a tear and treasure your loved ones past or present, or somewhere in between. Congratulations

    Not a downer, Tim, at all. I found this a tough read and it must have hit you much harder. I know with my mother’s later years that reality was a moving thing and now my sister is starting. But there can be moments of, dare I say it, humour. At the end of a seaside promenade my best friend’s father looked up at him and said in his perfect English upper class accent: I’m very sorry, but I have no idea who you are but thank you so much for this delightful walk.” All with a slight twist of irony which was his hallmark. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

    Okay, I’ve had a mega drama with my car days before a 5,000km road trip and I’ve had a to buy a new one in 48 hrs (on credit) so it ain’t fair to see 4 pages of comments, battle royals with a certain “kb” etc., before I get to say….. I LOVE THIS STORY no gifs, nothing clever, just, I love this ❤️

    Possibly for the first time I find myself agreeing 100% with PrivateTim. Was it a case of not just the characters taking themselves for granted but also we readers? But it jarred in a way.

    Two great 1930’s authors/poet Christopher Isherwood and W H Auden were lifelong friends who weren’t ever in what we now would call a relationship. They were deep friends who just automatically had sex when their paths crossed as they had done since student days. No way I could have sex with a friend but why is there so much judgement going onin so many comments here. It’s the same with a guy critiquing Will in Gap Year. Many readers seem to be placing their choices and value judgements on those who do not share their lifestyle….. sounds familiar? mrs g, Iike Chris I thought this a great piece of story-telling and thought-provoking. Brava!!!!
