    Terminal 5

Another example of the research behind the stories. I’ve just read a huge history of the VIETNAM WAR* and then looked at the way real events enter the early CAP series books; fact meeting fiction with a deft hand. V impressive, Mark. * by renowned British author, Max Hastings. So, so good, but utterly depressing.

    Terminal 5

Just in time for me as I go to bed in Valencia. Your trip sounds great! Oh and the chp wasn’t bad, either! ( only teasing @Mark Arbour. 😀)
  3. Great comments!

    Especially if Z**h was playing!
  7. That I make typo errors and also suffer with an US English autocorrect? 😭 Re Fall/Autumn, both terms were in use in 16th-century England, so the Pilgrims would have known Fall and taken the word with them. However, the use of it ended around 1700 in UK and autumn has since remained supreme and English people would assume that the Americans invented “Fall”.
  8. I totally agree! Also, some non-American English speakers look down on other versions but then, for example, I discovered that autumn was a substitute for Fall in uk due to continental influences. Not sure if it is true but as warning against assuming a superior attitude. As a resident in Spain, I loath the marketing use of “Spanglish” - our CEO spoke of “las schools”, the latter word pronounced as “eschools”, of course. Unreal.

    The Invitation

Ah now I know who you mean! I loved the movie, especially the female aide who discovers the prince in the closet:.
  10. Sadly, @kajean you will find that the second conditional is now taught as “if I was..” even in Oxford English course books. And as for my beloved “whom” it no longer appears…..
  11. Well that was unexpected!! But in this Hugillverse there is always a surprise or two!
  12. Such a good read from the start! Quintessentially English and yet universal in its themes.

    Chapter 6

I had read the first few chps months ago and got distracted. Am now totally into how this story develops. Thoroughly enjoyable!
  17. Absolutely!!!
  18. Very satisfactory and satisfying answers. I’m even more in awe of Mark and his team. CAP is an amazing series but for me as a historian, the Granger novels are such a great pleasure to read and to reflect on that era. Mark’s research is impeccable (think of Granger in the St Petersburg palaces and their Titian paintings!). 🤗
  19. Speaking of bad wieners….. I’m in UK and was informed by the supposedly responsible adult at home in Spain that (arch)criminal 001 was in observation at vets’ after eating “three or four double strength sleeping pills” she found on his bedside table, along with chewing his Tom Ford glasses….. She is fine but someone else is in the doghouse…. No pressies from duty free for him.
