    It is hard to believe that there are now 7 @Robert Hugill stories on GA. This is an excellent addition. As always, there is great storytelling, interesting characters whose lives are affected by changes outside of themselves. The written English is exquisite. Those who are already fans will be v content. For anyone who has yet to enter this writer’s world, now is your chance to start. A great read.

    Those are the best! I don’t do camping but we rent places in tiny hamlets or abandoned villages- walking dogs and searching out medieval churches is soooooo good for my Blood Pressure! As is reading mr @Robert Hugill!

    We have some ace Nordic socks which are wonderful protection against the Spanish stone floor chill factor. Great to have cool floors in the summer heat but in the (relatively) freezing cold of 14°C my tiny feet are frozen! we hade ice and frost on car windscreen last week something that happens once a decade or so……

    My tutor was shameless! I was his last ever student and he used to sit in his 15th-century study with a large Cuban cigar reminiscing rather than teaching me…. But his prose was exquisite…

    A bit harsh, perhaps, but authors like @Robert Hugill do make it seem effortless when I’m sure it isn’t. I remember my tutor telling me decades ago that every evening before working on his latest book he would read a chapter of PG Wodehouse to be inspired by his style. A strange choice for a medieval historian, perhaps! 🤔

    I know what my reaction to it was in Spain - ohhhhh sh*ttttttttt. Salary cuts, 8% increased hours, company life insurance policy eliminated, 100% healthcare coverage gone, and mortgage up to 12%……. Oh for their millions..

    I suddenly remember the old disco hit line: “last night a DJ saved my life from a broken heart”, for me it was a therapist, for others finding true love. For my students in UK (*) who had been abused by priests, strangers, parents etc., they needed that outside help when other relationships couldn’t handle such things. Yet for others, human altruistic love was enough. (*) I taught courses in Sexual Ethics and there was always someone hovering after certain units….

    I totally agree with my learned colleague! I’m a bit behind with the two stories but this chp is so well-written. There are so many lines I wish I could have created. Green with envy of @Robert Hugill’s talent.
