The reason I interpreted the way I did is the passage "he knew the boy was big enough to do anything and he would be powerless to stop him" If Dylan realizes that then you can be sure Ryan did. There also the line "He knew what was going to happen as much as he didn't want it to happen. " And then Dylan started to shed tears but Ryan didn't give a damn. I'm sure you're going to explain everything in the story but the danger you describe would it have been an option Hunter's dad to leave him with relatives in the states? I assume that's where they are arriving from. It doesn't take much an imagination to see Hunter getting a target on his back
