To answer the first paragraph, it's partly down to custom and practice. Prior to each Threadfall, T'ron met with his Wingleaders to discuss tactics, weather etc. They then met with their Wingseconds to pass on the information and decide how best to deploy their Wing. He's doing the same now. It's also to do with secrecy. In 'Dragonflight', even after Lessa wakes, she's not really in the public eye until she leads the Weyrs forward that night. T'ron's instinct is to discuss the plan with his fellow Weyrleaders initially, only bringing his Wingleaders in when they get to the stage of actually planning the big move. I was teary as I wrote the scene at the ice lake. I’m glad I succeeded in making it as poignant and moving as I wanted it to be. I will definitely be continuing, firstly with a few shorter stories, then onto a third part, taking up from where 'Gone Away, Gone Ahead' left off. Thanks for your comments, as always.

A really interesting story in the way it mixes ancient rituals with modern technology. I agree with @DamnDogs that this short story could easily develop into a novel. Well written, descriptive and poignant.

A short story in which the possibility of recovering images in an unconventional way is explored. Who knows, in a few years time, this may become science fact rather than science fiction.

A lovely story. Must be terrible to lose all of your belongings in a fire. One of my friends has no photos of his childhood for the same reason. I like the idea of someone being able to capture images from their brain. It may not be possible right now, but who knows, in the future this might become a possibility.

So glad those two have got together. Mitch had time to think through what he intended to do now he's been given a new lease of life and it looks like he and Will are heading for a happy ever after ending. What a feel good chapter!

Well, 'Threadfall' is almost at an end. It was originally intended as a short prequel to 'Gone Away, Gone Ahead' and has ended up far longer. There are a few more short stories to come in the 'Dragonriders of Pern' fanfic series and hopefully a longer third part, taking up from where 'Gone Away, Gone Ahead' finished. Finishing a story is always slightly sad, but it gives the mind an opportunity to start thinking about new ideas as well. Coming soon: 'Hidden Secrets' - A murder mystery with paranormal elements, set in an old cinema. Should be ready to post in a few weeks. Unlike the Dragonriders fanfics, which I usually write in episodic fashion, keeping just a few weeks ahead of posting, I've had to plan this out and complete it, due to all the plot twists. For Dragonriders fans, look out for 'Empty, Open, Dusty, Dead' - After the other five Weyrs disappear overnight, Zalna, a junior weyrwoman at Benden, tries to figure out what has happened. She is sure Weyrleader N'rax must be hiding something.

Another atmospheric chapter, with plenty of plot. The end makes me wonder if Giacomo is being pressurised by someone older than him - maybe the two teenagers who Enzo saw wrecking the restaurant earlier?

It's a pity really. If only there'd been a few more months...

I always think that serves to illustrate the different mindsets of dragons and people. They tend to assume that unless a human asks about something he or she isn't interested.

I've been looking forward to this part as well. Lessa was at Fort Weyr for at least a month before she recovered sufficiently to be able to talk to T'ron and Mardra. Ramoth would obviously have been talking with the other dragons, too during that time.

It’s lovely to see another story set around Ravello. I, for one, will never tire of the descriptions of the town and its countryside.

I can see why Aiden needs to get away and start afresh. Nathan's refusal to communicate with Jason could be for a number of different reasons. Who knows what his dad has told him about Jason? Or he may be under threat of disinheritance. I look forward to finding out the twists, turns and lies that have been told.

What a reprieve! Good job he didn't walk away when the doctor wasn't there at first. Just goes to show it’s always a good idea to get a second opinion. Getting out of Red Bluff probably saved his life, not breathing in all that that dust any more.

This is building up nicely. So good that Leo's mum has prior experience of what they boys are going through. But he needs to get out from his abusive home.

I was a little sceptical when I began reading, but your character and situation portrayal drew me in.

I think there must be some theoretical knowledge of jumping between times, maybe known by queen riders, the Weyrleader and a few bronzes, but it’s not something that is practiced much because of the dangers. Occasionally a pair might rediscover the skill (as did the rider who told M'ta), but I’m sure it’s strongly discouraged. Interestingly, once the five Weyrs go forward, everyone will know it’s possible, having done it several times. The genie will not go back in the bottle again...

That would solve a lot of problems later! Unfortunately, in the Pern series, the type of time travel is of the 'stable time loop', system, which means you can’t change the past once it's happened. Hence Lessa working out the other five Weyrs came ahead to her time and therefore someone had to have gone back to fetch them. I am firmly of the belief that if F'drun had not Impressed a dragon, he would have been murdered fairly early on in his life.

Very apt comparison. For many of them, it's all they've known for their whole lives.

She went back to Ruatha because of the details on the tapestry that had been commissioned to record the last Threadfall of the Eighth Pass over Ruatha. She noticed some differences in the design of the Hold compared with how it looked in modern times, and this was sufficient for her to give Ramoth coordinates. In 'Dragonflight' it states she was more or less unconscious for a few sevendays after arriving (Ramoth recovered faster, as dragons do) so T'ron and Mardra won't get to know the full story until she wakes and is coherent again.
