Thiago Zeca Baravento, the son of an American woman and a first generation Brazilian father, rises above the expectations of many for a black man born and raised in the predominantly minority Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Anacostia. After graduating from Howard University with a doctorate in pharmacology, and looking to provide his son Fabricio with a good life, Thiago leaves the District of Columbia, promising to one day return to his hometown.

A Hammerhead Universe Story

Shortly after the end of the Eighth Pass, five of the six Weyrs on Pern are found empty. Zalna, a junior weyrwoman at Benden Weyr, tries to discover what might have caused all the other weyrfolk and dragons to disappear and where they could have gone.

When asked for help by his alpha, Brandon Holstrom stepped forward to heed the call. Even though it would mean leaving behind everyone he knew and walk into the unknown of a foreign country, he still agreed. Part of a rare breed who run towards a fire instead of away. Based on the media reports he'd seen, Brandon could only guess what awaits him on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.

Under the phases of the moon, Jimmy Coutreau is hunting, following the howls that don't belong. A loner by choice, he finds himself fascinated by Sawyer Thomas, a man who doesn't belong in his world, but here he is anyways.

The Eighth Pass is over. At Fort Weyr, D’gar, Herebeth’s rider faces the future without his weyrmate, lost to Thread just two Falls before the last.
When Lessa brings the five Weyrs forward to the beginning of the Ninth Pass, he must face his fears, try to adapt to an altered world and take the risk of falling in love all over again.

The Southern Weyr project is coming to an end. H'rek and Rioth prepare for the return to Benden Weyr to fight Thread.
