Security - 1. Chapter 1

When I was in college my roommate was a very bright young man. We hit it off and became friends as well as study mates. One day, we were in our room studying, door locked, we didn’t want to be disturbed when someone pushed on the door and the door flew open.

“These rooms aren’t secure.”

With that comment, Lee and I decided we’d develop an alarm system that would not only alarm when someone entered our room but also record all the activity.

The result was a complicated alarm system that recorded intrusions, notified the police, and took face shots while recording the intrusion. We tested the system in our dorm, found several areas where there were over-lapping actions. By the time we graduated from college, we had perfected the system. My dad contacted a patent attorney and we patented the idea and system.

On the night of graduation, a few of us when out to celebrate. We made a mistake and went into the wrong part of town. The upstart was, we were accosted by four men with knives. Lee was ahead of us and confronted the men directly. I slipped my hand in my pocket and dialed 911 on my phone. The operator heard the conversation and I made sure she knew where we were.

“Lee, the police are on their way.”

When the lead thug heard this, he plunged the knife into Lee. The police caught them as they were running away. Lee was rushed to the hospital but died as a result of the wound.

I licensed the security system to Global Technologies who had security systems all over the world. Profits from the licensing I split with Lee’s folks. It was the right thing to do. No one at the Global knew about this arrangement and that was the way I wanted it.

We had a meeting scheduled with the Prime Minister of an eastern country. All of our negotiations were done in secrecy as a matter of practice. The basic idea was to make sure that the ‘world’ was unaware of the transactions between countries and Global Technologies.

Since Lee’s death, I developed a personal security device, I wanted to make sure Lee’s death didn’t happen in vain. The device was simple, a bracelet was made which contained the security information. The individual's DNA was incorporated in the bracelet, in case it was stolen, I had designed an interface that whoever put the bracelet on, the interface would confirm the DNA. If it was different, then a message would be sent to the nearest police and federal offices indicating that the bracelet was stolen. The bracelet had one other feature if a person was accosted, all they had to do was to rub the bracelet and the internal security program would be activated. The bracelet had a design on it that acted as functional buttons. One would automatically snap a photo, one would emit a bright light and the last one would emit a loud, piercing sound. The client would have to be taught how to use the functions and what precautions he’d need to take when he wore the bracelet.

This device was not licensed but each part was manufactured by secret agreements with several manufacturers. Again I supervised every step of the manufacture and no one person had all of the knowledge to make one.

Love the start... so sad that it had to start that way for the security to be developed, but many times that's how security comes about. I remember that I was mugged on the train when I moved north... That was when I started carrying as well. Never needed it since but always have something that will protect if need be. Looking forward to the new journey and give our hero my best.
