By Chance or Appointment - 2. Three Summer Skyscrapers
One lone wolf
sings its long clear solo
ringing across the field and forest
soon joined in tune by the antiphonal chorus
chanting the ancient midsummer psalm
beneath brilliant starlight
ever shining.
~
Three dark crows
call to the setting moon
framed in the twisted locust’s branches
hurling rude insults at its fading silver light,
while robins laud the coming of dawn
enough to make the ridge
glow with hope.
~
Now the air
lies heavy and weighty
like blankets piled layer on layer
on a world made still and somnolent by the sun,
or tidings made of dark-suited words,
which cannot ever be
unspoken.
If you took the time to read this chapter, I am most grateful. May I suggest you pay homage to the waning summer by writing some skyscrapers of your own?
