GA Writing Prompts - 28. # 118 The Elven Lord
Cue – Myths and Legends
No matter what part of the world you are from there are myths and legends associated with it. Your task is to take one of these creatures from your part of the world and create something new.
A poem based on Erlkönig by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (English translation: Erlking by Okla Elliott) [http://www.percontra.net/17elliot.htm] and with a twist ending.
The Elven Lord
Â
Who rides so late through the windy night?
A knight with fair hair and face so bright
His handsome squire is by his side
The two set out for a nightly ride
Why is your face so frightened, my squire?
Can’t you see the Erlking in his dark attire?
With a golden sceptre and a golden crown?
Squire, it’s just the fog rising from the ground
Come, handsome squire, pretty boy
I’ll take you on a ride of joy
Through flower fields and meadows green
I’ll show you things you’ve never seen
My dearest knight, oh can’t you hear
The Erlking whispers in my ear
Dear squire, please stay quiet and calm
The whispering wind won’t do you harm
Won't you come with me, my squire dear?
My daughters are waiting, my daughters are near
They’ll fall in love with you upon first sight
They’ll dance with you all through the night
My dearest knight, oh can’t you see
The Erlking’s daughters are waiting for me
Dear squire, calm, all I can see
Are willow trees in front of me
Rapt with your beauty, I love thee
I will use force, if you won’t come free.
I feel his touch, his breath, my knight
Please free me from his hug so tight
Paralyzed and seized with fright
The squire turns right to the knight.
The valiant hero draws his sword
And bravely kills the Elven Lord
