Lux's Indulgences - 10. December 23, the Last Day Before

have yourself a merry little Christmas

let your heart be light

a plea, whispered softly into the dark

from now on, our troubles will be out of sight

have yourself a merry little Christmas

make the Yuletide gay

will medication induced happiness be enough

false euphoria and love, or real today?

from now on, our troubles will be miles away

but the return home is troubling in itself

all that distance both physical

and in memory

here we are as in olden days

happy golden days of yore

though gold was never supposed to tarnish

giving reflection just a tinted veneer of truth

faithful friends who are dear to us

gather near to us once more

if family still meets back home

and our schedules intersect

through the years we all will be together

if the fates allow

but time is wearing on all

eroding in the distance

so hang a shining star upon the highest bough

let your tears slide down your cheeks in darkness

lit glinting by coloured lights of desperate hope

and have yourself a merry little Christmas now

The like is for support for my friend. I hope you are okay, lux. I'm not going to lie. This was deeply affecting in it's bitter sadness. I hope you have the best Christmas ever, buddy... cheers... Gary xoxo

I'm actually doing better this year, so far. It's been a tough year but the changes I've made in my life since the end of July are starting to bear fruit. It's easy to channel memories and feelings of the past, at times. Like most people with chronic mental illness, the holidays are a mixed bag and have been for a very long time. It's an opportunity for extremes of emotion to creep in, whether you are 'normal' or not. We all have our hurts that burden us - lost loved ones, personal dissatisfactions, yearnings. For years, there have been a few Christmas songs that can bring me to tears no matter how much I try to steel myself, and this is one of them.

Your interweaving of the well known song with the ache of your soul just blew me away. You remind me how important it is to share whatever joy I may encounter, to give away myself.

I hope you are okay. If the knowledge that I and many others support you and value your writing is of any use at all, please remember this. Know that others out here are thinking of you.

Thanks for reading, Parker. I'm glad it had an effect. I had a good holiday season this past year. Thanks for your thoughts.
