I took a trip recently.  It was not an easy decision to do that but I did it any way.

This came out of that trip

People who birthed me

Raised me

Taught me

 

With whom I share genetics

Parents siblings

 

People who made me feel

Less than

So Wrong

 

From whom I distanced myself

To save myself

People who still make me feel

I am saved

Your poem speaks volumes about family, and the emotional struggles that come along with some of those connections that we're forced to endure because of relations. Sharing genetics isn't always enough. In fact, it can cause more pain than happiness.

 

(This is a great poem, molly. Glad you started a blog for your writing. Keep going.)

I remember being about 24 and meeting my mom in a faraway place, out of context of my boyhood home and town, when I was building an independent life, and thinking I may have come from that stock but did not belong to it anymore. I feel that when I read this poem....

 

And please do come to Live-Poets Society (in 'Poets Corner' forum) if you have a poem you want to 'workshop.' We're all really nice and supportive there :)

Yes molly, people who make you feel less, you should distance yourself from them!!

But I m happy for you now, you have your family now...who love you, value you and who knows your worth!!

Molly! You show genetics don't make a family. Often we create family for ourselves. Like the family we created here.

It's hard having to do such choices but it can be necessary. In the end what matter the most is that you made and created your own family with people you love, care about and trust and they do you back :hug:

Those choices are hard but necessary. Print thIs out and keep it in your wallet. There may come a day someone is judging you for the choice, and this will explain better than anything else.

This hit me kind of hard. Not because I had to distance myself to save myself, but I so know the feeling. My family has always looked at me as the odd one, the one they can't figure out. Luckily, they've supported me nonetheless. But I feel I don't really belong. I have friends who weren't so lucky... The pain they feel is devastating at times.

Thank you AC.  This visit was in their new home, in a new state, and I had the same feelings.

Several of my GA family are regulars there, you  may see more of me there...
