Lugh Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 sighs I need help. I'm looking for phrases that have the same or similar meaning to "A face that could launch a thousand ships" if you have any ideas I would appreciate them. thank you, Lugh
Bondwriter Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 All the "ice melting" phrases can't work? (Actually, I wasn't too sure of what this phrase meant, and googling it landed me on the hangrightpolitics site, which didn't yield any significant explanation) Do you, or does anyone know where this phrase come from?
Lugh Posted July 21, 2007 Author Posted July 21, 2007 it was used at one point to describe the beauty of helen of troy...
Bondwriter Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Oh, Ok, this makes a lot of sense now. So you want some slightly martial phrase? A serious tone? Could it be a bit humorous?
glomph Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships And burnt the topless towers of Ilium? Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss. from Marlowe's Doctor Faustus Not to be confused with the Helenisms of Helen of New York, recombinant linguistics. See also the thread about incest between clones' offspring.
glomph Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Not to mention If a picture paints a thousand words, Then why can't I paint you? The words will never show the you I've come to know. If a face could launch a thousand ships, Then where am I to go? There's no one home but you, You're all that's left me too. And when my love for life is running dry, You come and pour yourself on me. If a man could be two places at one time, I'd be with you. Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way. If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die, I'd spend the end with you. And when the world was through, Then one by one the stars would all go out, Then you and I would simply fly away
Kanaye Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Does "a crowning beauty" mean the same thing? I always thought it did. You know, a princess would never get the crown if she wasn't beautiful, right? Well, I guess you can also think about beauty queens and how only the prettiest and best one gets the crown. I was a very sheltered child growing up, (we were only allowed to watch tv on holidays that had parades on tv. Like the macey's perade) so, I never thought about the second meaning until I was much older. Even now, I usually think of princesses so...
C James Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 sighs I need help. I'm looking for phrases that have the same or similar meaning to "A face that could launch a thousand ships" if you have any ideas I would appreciate them. thank you, Lugh A face shining with such beauty that the sun itself shied away, seeking refuge beyond the western hills, unable to share the heavens with its brighter rival.
Site Administrator Graeme Posted July 21, 2007 Site Administrator Posted July 21, 2007 I'm not sure if this is helping Lugh or not. I didn't respond the first time I saw this because I couldn't think of anything.... Lugh -- are you looking for a rewording of this phrase, a phrase that indicates a great beauty, or a phrase that means a beauty people would fight over? They're not the same thing and it may help focus ideas.
Conner Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 (edited) A face shining with such beauty that the sun itself shied away, seeking refuge beyond the western hills, unable to share the heavens with its brighter rival. CJ!!! Beneath the harsh lurker exterior lies a poet! Nay! A Romeo! Ya know, CJ, I could sell that line to my straight friends at $5. a pop??? What do ya say? Conner Edited July 21, 2007 by Conner
BeaStKid Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 A face shining with such beauty that the sun itself shied away, seeking refuge beyond the western hills, unable to share the heavens with its brighter rival. I agree with Graeme...It is not clear as to what Lugh wants from this phrase. Care to clear the cloud Lugh??? The BeaStKid
JamesSavik Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 I don't know about a face that could launch a thousand ships but I've seen a few homely enough to sink a bass boat and put a divorce lawyers kids through school.
Lugh Posted July 21, 2007 Author Posted July 21, 2007 Lugh -- are you looking for a rewording of this phrase, a phrase that indicates a great beauty, or a phrase that means a beauty people would fight over? not a rewording but something that has a similar meaning... great beauty / beauty people would fight over... yes that. humor is ok, so is being serious, this is something that will be repeated more than once in the story so some different angles would be nice. Thanks guys. Lugh
Site Administrator Graeme Posted July 21, 2007 Site Administrator Posted July 21, 2007 One whose looks makes the rest seem like lesser beings. Compared to a top model, he/she's like perfume to a fart. Rules don't apply if they're the prize at the end. Not the best, but that's what I came up with after a few minute's of thinking. I'll let you know if I come up with any more.
xander Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Compared to a top model, he/she's like perfume to a fart. lol, I like this one...
Rigel Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships? Of course, this means that one millihelen is enough beauty to launch one ship. --Rigel
Ieshwar Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 A beauty which Venus (Goddess of Beauty) herself envied?
