Dear Reader,

The following report was prepared by the Administrative Council of Mages for your enlightenment. It provides detailed profiles on the most powerful Federations and also the Prismatic Domain itself.

THE DOMAIN & THE FEDERATIONS

Before the days of the Empire the Rainbow City was simply the capital of the Prismatic Domain (also known as the Prismatic Territories). The Prismatic Domain comprises most of the expansive Evenstar Peninsula and is exceeded in size only by the vast High Kingdom of Sanzion. The Prismatic Domain is not considered a 'federation' because it is the home nation of the Exatled.

A federation is more or less a country with some federations being larger than others. Most of the federations are in control of vassal states of their own. Each federation must pay annual tribute of 10% of their annual national tax to the emperor.

Every federation is responisble for their own government and national security however Imperial forces (from the Prismatic Kingdom) will have fortifications and related interests in strategic places empire-wide. The ruler of a federation may request imperial military or economic intervention in exceptional circumstances. Sometimes the Imperial Government will intervene in the national affairs of a federation although this is exceedingly rare.

Rank - (No Ranking Required) - The Prismatic Kingdom - Celebrating 12000 years of Empire

Geography & Climate - 2nd largest of the Rainbow Territories. Dominated by the River Rainbow which flows from the Great Inner Sea in the North to the Korisant Ocean in the South. Predominantly flat terrain except for the Prismatic Range in the Central regions and the Cones of Viros in the lower East and South including the Rainbowmount itself. Temperate in the North with cold Winters and warm Summers, Sub-tropical in the South with hot Summers.

Major Neighbors - Der Prinzenhama (North), Aquitora (South across the Korisant Ocean), Ernuin (West across the Reef of Aderixo), Kananiakan (East)

Entry into the Imperium - Founder - In the Year 4,300 SE (12,753 years old)

Comment - World's oldest civilization. Ruled by the Exalted and governed in their name by the Elite. According to legend there is enough gold in the Rainbow City to make every living person a prince, yet the treasures of the imperial capital are enjoyed by less than 1% of the population. Rainbow City is responsible for about 71% of the total output of the entire world, sitting at the center of a voracious beast of an economy.

It is the city of dreams, and it is still possible that a poor man can be made as rich as a prince. It is the world center of prismatic magic, government, finance, commerce, trade, military operations, shipping, industry, manufacturing, education, luxury goods, entertainment, well-being, food and beverages, technology, tourism and information. It is also the world center for murder, slavery, gambling, exploitation, vice, prostitution, narcotics, and all manner of other crimes.

The Rainbow Empire is acknowledged worldwide as the pre-eminent political and social force, albeit grudgingly in most cases. There is much opposition to the often arrogant, imperious, and heavy handed approach the empire tends to endorse in diplomatic and international relations. A grand alliance of nations to balance the Rainbow was established nearly 800 years ago, and most of the empire's most powerful rivals belong to this organization.

Critics accuse the empire of being grossly corrupt and out of touch with itself. Decreases in magic user numbers, challenges in controlling the rise of technology, and the rapid ascension of the Cause represent the biggest challenge the Emperor has faced in his reign. The Prismatic Kingdoms are struggling to deal with an extraordinarily large and ever growing population, mass poverty, and a public disconnect between the 'Exalted' and their subjects.

Also very troubling is the increasingly volatile and destabilizing 'Dance of the Dynasties' - a highly ritualized and dangerous political pastime that has played out among the 'Elite' for millenia. The Elite are members of the gilded prismatic dynasties who actually govern the empire on the level below the Exalted.

There has been a long and bitter rivalry with Der Prinzenhama, and the two nations have warred 7 times - sharing 3 victories a piece - the Emperor intervened in their most recent war 300 years ago. Sanzion is seen by many as the new land of opportunity. Well known for the volatile and frequently deadly politics of its rulers and nobility.

Comment - Der Prinzenhama is the western powerhouse of the empire, casting a long shadow over all the economies, politics, and social structures of her neighbors and beyond. This heavily industrialized federation is second only to the Prismatic Kingdom in iron and steel production. Her relations with Sanzion have ever been rocky, with 7 wars being fought between them and no real winner. Der Prinzenhama has frequently lobbied the Emperor to have Sanzion halved in geographical size.

Her flagship business interest, the legendary Ernuin Trading Company, is the largest corporation outside of The Prismatic Domain. She controls the worlds largest merchant fleet and enjoys favorable relations with all federations and most non imperial nations. Ernuin has small yet prosperous trading colonies spread to the four winds. Ernuin is a supporter of the Imperial regime as well as the Cause, and is the longest serving federation.

Rank 4 - The Kingdom of KANANIAKAN and Her Liege Prefectures

Geography & Climate - Vast and flat except for the brooding presence of three widely spaced volcanoes. This land is notable for its endless prairies, savannas, and shrublands suitable for her plentiful corn, wheat, vegetable, and fruit concerns. Kananiakan is also notable for her great everglade swamp regions and south/eastern deserts. Cool/mild Winters, Hot Summers.

Comment - The land of wheat and honey, Kananiakan is one of the 3 great food production regions of the empire. Kananiakan is also famous for gems, stone, and leather and enjoys a close trading and political kinship with her powerful neighbor Sanzion. The capital city is located within the worlds largest swamp, The Raupo. The swamp is the result of an earthquake, which then set off a volcanic eruption followed up by a tusnami 10,000 years ago.

Rank 5 - The Holy Territory of the ERIXOIAN CAUSE and Her Banner States.

Geography & Climate - The Cause States are situated on a large, low peninsula that juts out into the Great Inland Sea. Large areas of the Cause lands lie below sea level. Mild Summers and bitter Winters.

The Innarcht is building an ever growing army and navy, and is equipping his people with the latest technological devices and knowledge. As the premier representatives of the Godess Erixoia, The Cause has numerous adherents from beyond imperial borders giving her powerful influence. Imperial allies include Der Prinzenhama, Ernuin, Indiron, Sajia, and Carmanis.

Comment - Indiron is the most technologically advanced nation outside of the capital, yet in some ways it exceeds the capital. Her legendary 'Scientific Army' is one of the supreme spearheads of the Imperial War-machine, and her laboratories and institutes provide nearly two thirds of all the medical and technological capital in the world. Indiron also produces greater quantities of processed food than anywhere else except the Prismatic Domain. Close ally to Der Prinzenhama, Indiron joins neighbors Ernuin, Eladir, and Romandor as having a queen from the mighty Czosan Der Prinzenhama dynasty.

Rank 7 - CARMANIS and Her Trothe Nations

Geography & Climate - The Northern tip of this nation is situated well within the Glacicore Circle, giving an indication of just how far North Carmanis reaches. Overall, Carmanis is a large Federation situated in the North where the winters are long and bitterly cold, and the spring-summer-autumn season is relatively the same length as Winter if combined. There are two notable mountain regions in the East and West, several great forests, and some of the largest pasture-land in the empire.

Major Neighbors - Axajian (North), Cause Territories (South), Innestar (East) Kelledron (West)

Agriculture Rank 7

Foodstuffs Rank 7

Military Rank 8

Entry into the Imperium 6th - 10,050 years

Comment - Carmanis is known as the land of stormstone, and engineers some of the finest magic resistant stone and workers of that stone hailing from the North. Carmanis is the prominent Imperial Federation in the North, and provides important resources and materials to the imperial economy. Carmanis is diverse due to her three distinct populations. The warlike Highlander clans of the Eastern mountains and seacoast, the Cause Jerakobites upon the plains and the Colcaran area, and the Half-elf Forresters from the endless Ceberidel Forests in the West.

Rank 8 - AXAJIAN and 'His' Cohort Enclaves

Geography & Climate - The most northerly of all human habitation is Axajian, with only the Ice Elves and Eriki dwarves living further North. Axajian consists of three lands. Giant forests to the South, volcanic geothermal regions on the Almastran Isle, and the Glacicore to the North. Axajian has a ferocious 8 month long Winter and no true Summer, except in the South, which is more properly called a long Spring.

Major Neighbors - Erikimau (North), Carmanis (South), Norja (East), Niralis (West)

Foodstuffs Rank 9

Military Rank 9

Entry into the Imperium - 7th - 10,038 years

Comment - Axajia is famous for being the historic and deadly rival of Carmanis for control of the North. 'His' Ice Dragons and vulca raiders have struck fear into the hearts of all her neighbors for as long as anyone can remember. Over 10,000 years ago, Axajia was brought kicking and screaming into the Empire. However, it has always remained a dangerous, treacherous servant. Axajia gathers 'his' wealth from the great store of white (ice) diamonds deposited deep within the volcanic mines of the central plateau. Axajian is also notable for producing the super durable and lightwieght vulcasteel, which makes the finest armor. However, forestry and fishing still represents the bulk of the Axajian income.

Rank 9 - ARLAD and Her Royal Reserves

Geography & Climate - Arlad is in a warm area of the world, right on the Eastern borders of Sanzion. Arladians enjoy mild-warm Winters and warm Summers. They are spared the intense heat by the powerful Salient jet stream that flows over the Federation throughout the warmer months. Arlad is utterly flat with no natural landmarks rising more than 40 feet above sea level. In fact nearly 40% of the nation lies below sea level, resulting in the worlds greatest network of sea-walls and landworks.

Major Neighbors - Transthal (North), Sanzion (South), Gevaran (East), Sanzion (West)

Government - Sovereign Federation in the Name of the Emperor

Executive Title - Citrone

Stylized - His Citronic Majesty -The Citrone Lord

Timber Rank 12

Agriculture Rank 8

Fisheries Rank 10

Foodstuffs Rank 10

Military Rank 10

Entry into the Imperium 10th - 2,177 years

Comment - Arlad has long been the gateway to the far East, opening up the many kingdoms and territories beyond. Arladian traders rival Sanzion, and even the Ernuinese in this part of the world. With its large trading and financial sector, Arlad enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world, like the famed Kananiakan capital of Qantian. Arlads capital city Amstrelind is a place of canals, bridges and tall houses. Amstrelind is famous for its gem and art trade, also rivaling the bigger cities in this respect. Closely allied to and protected by Sanzion.

Beauhamelais - Sixth of the nine great capitals of the Empire - 4,943 leagues from the Imperial Rainbow City

So this is Beauhamelais mused Derix. After travelling many days from his maritime homeland of Liirium, he was thrilled to finally arrive. I knew it was beautiful, but wow! I never imagined this... Beauhamelais was like no other city. It almost appeared as if the city was being devoured by the forest at the same time that it was expanding. Gleaming buildings of blue and white surrounded by the brown and green of the trees, impossibly high crystalline structures supporting flowing flowers of every colour, trickling water flowing down cascading waterfalls, and polished paths of coral and seashells were just the start of the city's wonders. Everything about Beahamelais screamed of beauty, from the scenery to the fashion style, elegant silks in the brightest colours, soldiers in armor so polished you could see a reflection, flowing dresses made from the finest materials, and alluring gemstone laid into the most luxurious jewelry he had ever seen. It was meant to be a city of over a million souls yet there was a stately quietness to Beauhamelais. Derix found most of her wide avenues to be sparsely trafficked even the great Emerald Plaza could not have had anymore than 200 souls in it.

As he was looking around wide eyed, he missed the approach of a city guard. “First time in the city, young one?”

Whirling around in surprise, Derix blushed heavily before nodding, not trusting his voice to stay steady. Swallowing to calm his nerves, he replied that he was summoned to the Rainbow Academy of Beauhamelais for training.

“Ah, a young mage then! Don't get many of those these days, not many at all.” The guard had a whistful look in his eyes for a moment before shaking his head. “You'll want to keep going down this avenue here,” the guard indicated one with light pink seashells and purple coral. “This will take you right up to the academy. Not that it's hard to miss, glowing as it does with all those Sun-Burst Lilies the mages like to grow.” The guard motioned towards the forest ceiling far ahead, and the dancing lights coming from somewhere on the ground.

“Thank you, sir.” Derix was hoping everyone here was as friendly as the guard.

“The glow of His Emeraldic Majesty shine upon you! Welcome to the Tourmaline City!” said the guard as he moved off down the street.

Making his own way down the street revealed more wonders. The shops were displaying marvellous items, from glowing crystals that the signs proclaimed could be turned on and off with a touch, providing 'The cheapest and most convenient light found anywhere in Indiron', to exotic petshops providing everything from adorable furry animals with pointy ears to jewelled reptiles that sparkled a rainbow of colours as they moved. Looking to the end of the street he saw the source of the glow of dancing lights that shone through the foliage far above. There, at the top of a small hill, was a building that looked entirely organic. Rising out of a complex root system was an enormous tree, bigger than any he had ever seen. It was situated in a large park and surrounded by shell white buidings fronted with wide porches. Secretly, he bet that it was the biggest in the world. Covering the tree were thousands of blossoms moving with a life of their own, glowing in all the colours of the rainbow.

“Amazing, aren't they?”

“Ah, what?” Startled, Derix looked around quickly, trying to find who had spoken to him.

“The flowers, young Telekinetic!” A kindly older gentleman in white and green responded.

“Oh, yes. They are. Can you hear them too?” he asked, for he could hear them chiming and ringing in a thousand musical notes.

“Hear them? No, I don't believe I do. Are you sure you are feeling alright? I've never heard of anyone describing a noise to accompany Sun-Burst Lilies...” the older man was gazing down at Derix with interest.

“No, I feel fine. Perhaps it's nothing... Not to be rude, but who are you? You don't look like most of the people around here.”

“Oh dear me, I had forgotten not everyone knows me! I am Grandmaster Lorshan, Headmaster of the Rainbow Academy here in Beauhamelais,” replied the man, gesturing at the expansive grounds of the campus. “And you must be Derix, our newest recruit this year. It isn't often we see your kind around here! Telekinetic and a Psi-Gen? Yes a very rare combination indeed.”

Derix gaped. “Sir, how did you – wait did you read my...” The mage smiled mysteriously. He seemed to sparkle with power and it made Derix give up trying to entertain his incredulousness. He changed the subject.

“Umm how exactly do we get into the school? I don't see any door or openings...”

“Ahhh, one must ask nicely! The tree is very much alive, and it creates doorways to the outside as needed. Come, let me show you”

It's now been three weeks since I arrived in Beauhamelais. The professors are all as varied and interesting as the city itself! I've taken to travelling around the city in my spare time, soaking up the marvels of the city that is now my home. The flowers at the school still whisper to me, telling me secrets about the way things are held together, and gossip about the students and staff. I often sit in my room talking with them for hours.

I've felt a pull towards the waterfalls recently, and I can't say why. People swim in the river, however no one seems to go anywhere near the falls. I know that the King is going to the falls in 3 days time where he will offer flowers to the Sprites who are supposed to live there. He does it once a year but few people are allowed to view the ceremony. I think I will have to check it out in the next few days, after all, when I asked the Solum (that's what the lilies like me to call them) about the waterfalls they said it had many wonders to be found. I wonder what they could mean? It's just water, is it not?

Derix.

Cezzareh - Minor Federation of the Empire - 3,800 leagues from the Imperial Rainbow City

Be there any pigeon to fly a message true

Be there any rabbit to hide me underground

Be there any housewitch to better me with brew

Be there any earthworm to save me when I sound

"Hurry Jenna! You must keep moving!" Blu was panicked beyond panic. Jenna's foot had slipped out of her sandal and she was struggling to tear it and its twin from her feet. She would run better barefooted.

"Here let me help you quick!" Blu grabbed the left sandal and pulled as hard as he could and then his heart sank as Jenna screamed. He had pulled too hard and had caused her to hyper extend her foot. The shadowy figures were now upon them. It was useless. He just lay down on the hard cobble chest heaving, eyes streaming and awaited the inevitable.

"I'm so sorry Jenna, so sorry!" he cried.

Jenna cringed in terror as the ten Cause-knights took up position in a circle around them. Three hooded figures in white emerged from the other direction. Incausitors! Blu's heart lurched inside of him - The Incausitors were the elite investigators of the Erixioian Movement known to most simply as The Cause.

Incausitors were feared for their harsh treatment of citizens and especially the way they dealt with anyone found to be working magic within a Cause territory. The Innarcht had decreed that the use of magic was anathema in any nation over which he was ruler and unfortunately for Blu and his sister Jenna, Cezzareh was one such place.

Blue and Jenna were well known as 'House-witches' in the principality. A house-witch was imperial jargon for any magic user who had never been formally trained. Housewitches were often derided as frauds but invariably had fiercely loyal customers who supported them, particularly among the common laborers and poor folk. Blu and Jenna made their living tending to the concerns and ailments of their neighborhood however their untrained powers afforded them.

Blu had returned home from the fishing fleets 11 years ago because of the Great Earthquake. The quake had claimed their beloved parents and Jen was but a child. Their mother had the gift of Clairvoyancy very strongly and both siblings had inherited it although Jenna seemed to be a stronger compulsor. They would never know for sure because of their promise to their mother never to be tested. Their mother had once gone to have herself tested many years ago in her youth and was told to try again another time since she was not yet powerful enough to be accepted. But she never did - instead she married Blu's father and settled down.

Raising his sister had ended Blu's job of working the fishing and crabbing fleets one of the things for which Cezzareh was famous. But Cezzareh's greatest claim to fame was the fact that the Prester Elko began his epic walk in the desert just over the needle like peaks of the Cezz Mountains that ringed the city. Cezzareh was not one of the major Federations but it was definitely one of the best known.

Cezzareh was situated on the Kordian coast on the eastern shores of Erin Bay. Directly across the great bay lay Ernuin and beyond that, the Imperial City. Cezzareh was the second most visited place of pilgrimage for the Followers after the Cause. This small but prosperous city state nestled deep below the Cezz Mountains which protected the city and her inhabitants from the scorching Kreshan desert beyond. The border with the Kreshan Empire began just 2 miles beyond the outer lip of the rocky fortress like abutments of the Mountains.

The powerful Kreshanian empire disputed the presence of the Cause on the edge of their sacred desert having lost a 25 year long war for the Cezz principality over 4,000 years ago. There had been several attempts by the Kresha in the time since to regain their lost territory with heavy losses on both sides. Blu and Jenna were from the old Cezz peoples who had occupied the site before the arrival of Prester Elko and eventually his Cause. In fact, according to their mother they were from the long deposed ruling family. Blu had intended to learn more about their history but his mother was dead now. It was too late.

In the years since their parents death Blu had raised his sister on his own and to the best of his ability he tried to nurture the unusual gifts that both she and he were blessed with. He had traded fishing for housewitching and Jenna had joined him as she grew older and more proficient. She was now 20 and they had been doing so well. They had been able to repair their home and were living humble but happy lives when the great decree was made. Rainbow magic had never been popular among the Cause peoples because they followed the Creator Goddess Erixoia and Rainbow magic was of Aderixo, the being whom they say chased their mother away.

But most of Blu and Jenna's clients were from the old Cezz peoples and so they rarely ran into any problems. So when the great decree was made Blu knew that he and Jenna would just have to be more careful and lower the profile of their business. He had been sure that the Governor would not allow the powerful Archbanner of Cezzareh to bring any magic user to actual physical harm. Because even though Cezzareh was a banner state of the Cause, the Cause was a federation of the Empire and therefore ultimately answerable to the Rainbow King - Emperor Ryanis III in the Great City.

But all this came to naught when early one evening he and Jenna returned from a lovely dinner at the local taverna to discover their little house aflame and a dread host of Cause knights and Incausitors awaiting them outside on the streets. Blu cursed that none of the gifts he or Jenna possessed could have warned them from what was to come. And he cursed at the greasy sight of Marku, Jenna's former suitor pointing out Blu and Jenna's sudden appearance to the Incausitors. Betrayal!

So Blu grabbed his sister's hand and together they began to run but it was futile for they had been captured within minutes of attempting to flee. Blu feared greatly but not for himself. he feared for his sister and what would become of her. Jenna was vivacious and bright, a sunny happy personality beloved by all who knew her including Marku the merchant - their betrayer. Tears sprang to Blu's eyes as he remembered the saddened faces of their neighbors watching helplessly as their home burnt and as they fled. He would be separated from his sister and Aderixo knows what would happen to her then!

"Verily I say unto thee" said the lead Incausitor formally from behind his white visored mask.

"If thou are the forsaken one known as Bluesilver of Cypress town - and we know thou art..." the smell of smoke and strong hyssop hung about the speaker.

"And if this be thy sister, Jennifyre also of Cypress town, then hear ye these charges!"

They had been captured outside the taverna where earlier they had dined. A growing crowd had gathered expectantly, some of them exultant and surprised to be witnessing such a thing. Others horrified to see good friends in the dust and about to be condemned.

"In the light of His Holiness Innarcht Alen I you are hereby charged with unlawful use of magic within a sacred precinct of which Cezzareh is one of the most sacred." For shame!"

Thunder rolled in the distance.

"By holy decree of His Sacredness Innarcht Alen I and under the law of the college of capitols in the Holy City I hereby declare the right to execute you both where you stand. Knights! - raise them up!"

Jenna screamed and Blu groaned in a guttural moan of terror. He did not feel the rough handling of the knights on either side of him as he was jerked up from the ground. But he heard his sister scream yet again in a higher pitch as they forced her to stand on a severely sprained foot. Tears filled his vision.

The Incausitor flanked by his two companions and visored by his metal mask raised a thin black wand. A weapon of great horror because it was said to heat the nerves of it's intended victim whilst freezing the blood resulting in a most excruciating death. The Cause preferred this method for use on those who had been sentenced to death. What Blu did not know was that he was the first who would be publicly executed for magic use anywhere in the world.

"You are accountable for your evil. You know full well the law and the law has made just provision for such as you. You have no right to trial and no recourse for counsel. There is no consideration for final words or last testament."

The Incausitor raised his wand above the heads of Blu and his sister who was no longer crying. He spoke to her.

"I love you. We go to join our Mama and our Papa now; do not be afraid." She nodded and closed her eyes.

And then Blu felt his blood run cold.

But it was not at the doing of the Incausitor because a great coppery earth dragon was now hovering just ten feet above them. Blu was shocked. Earth Dragons were extremely rare and were not thought to reside in this part of the world anymore. The last known sighting of one was over 2,000 years ago. He was sure it was a female since males were said to have obvious bulges in all the right places.

Dragons were not created by the Goddess Erixoia as she fled paradise - they were instead the creation of Aderixo. She was huge, absolutely monstrous - easily as big as the very largest of the giant Fire Dragons that occasionally visited Cezzareh.

"WHO DARES ACCOST JENNIFYRE OUR FAVORITE MAGE WITH WHOM WE HAVE COME TO CONSULT REGARDING OUR INTEMPERATE FLATULENCE!"

The dragon's voice boomed in the minds of every living person within 20 miles."

The facing walls of buildings broke apart nearby and detritus was scattered across the ground in the vacuum of the massive dragon's 300 foot wide beating wings. Tiles were loosening from roofs and then people crawled away screaming as the 700 foot long wyrm landed amongst them in a huge resounding thud. Her swishing tail sent people, horses and carts flying and a crater was formed in the ground as her massive weight settled into the ground. Blu cringed at the sight of several dead bodies. Innocent bystanders caught out by the arrival of this mythical and incomparable monster of yore.

The Causeknights and the Incausitors cowered, suddenly transformed just like everyone else into 'little people' as the dragons liked to call humans.

"SSSPEAK INCAUSITOR!"

"Great Drake, you-you cannot do this! This is most irregular - under imperial law The Cause is within its rights as a sovereign state to treat with housewitches as it pleases. These are not sanctioned mages, these are not legitimate practitioners!"

"WHAT ARE THE BORDERS OF MEN TO USSS? WHAT IS IMPERIAL LAW TO USSS? WHAT IS CAUSE LAW TO A DRAGON?"

The marvelous bejeweled eyes of the earth dragon flashed every shade of green as she sniffed at the quaking Causeknights and their three shivering commanders two of whom had soiled themselves. Blu crawled closer to his sister and tried to cover her with his body in an effort to protect her.

"WE WOULD SEE THY FACES CAUSE CHILDREN - UNMASK THYSELVESSS!"

Blu was shocked because it was anathema for Causeknights and Incausitors to be seen by anyone else but their own. Just as it was not permitted that the Exalted could be viewed by commoners. But they removed their masks at the command of the dragon and yet Blu's vision was blurred because they were using some kind of magic to further conceal their identities. Erixoian magic.

The dragon sniffed at the knights, ignoring the Incausitors.

"THOU HAST CLEVER MAGIC, HATERS OF THE RAINBOW BUT WE CAN SEE THEE REGARDLESSS!"

She nodded at the knights, her great head swaying almost hypnotically. Blu knew the legends.., never look into the eyes of a dragon too long and never follow the motion of her head. Dragons were immune to all magic.

"THESE ONES BE NOT RIGHT!"

She declared and with that she immolated the knights in a vapor of green colored fire. Blu heard terrified screams from people who were cowering but still watching further down the lane. That's when a company of Imperial Knights appeared followed by two carriages. From what Blu could tell they were Knights Iridescent - green, red and purple pennants. The dragon who had been eating the charred remains of the knights noticed them and reared up.

They stopped a respectful distance away and then two Imperial Mages climbed down from the lead coach. They wore glittering ulturometers whirling and spinning in the air above their heads. One was garbed in the crimson robes of the Order of Compulsion and the other wore Indigo robes but Blu could not remember which house those colors belonged to.

The Governor of Cezzareh stepped down from the other coach accompanied by three frightened looking officials. The Governor also wore an ulturometer which sparkled with opals and sapphires. Just one of those crowns could feed and clothe a hundred families for a year. Somehow Blu still managed to notice how tall and slender the man was and how handsome he looked. Cezzareh was a banner state of the Cause but it was still part of the empire and the Governor was the voice of the emperor here. His role was mainly ceremonial and trade related except when something happened that exceeded Causian law. It was he who spoke next.

"In the name of His Most Imperial Majesty we greet thee o mighty dragon!" he intoned.

"I am your humble servant Prince Damian Rantz Ecarin native of the Imperial City and Governor of Cezzareh. We are at your service"

He then prostrated himself in the dust and muck before her and so did the officials retainers and knights who accompanied him, even the coach drivers, even the mages.

The dragon stretched out her long neck and sniffed at them a little then she leaned back about 20 feet.

"GO ON!"

"If it pleases thee, majestic dragon, we come to beg the lives of these humans who yet survive including the veritable Incausitor."

"WHY BEG THE LIFE OF ONE THOU CLEARLY DESPISESSS - WE SHALL EAT HIM!"

"Majestic Earth Dragon, I am responsible to His Most Imperial Majesty - your equal by declaration of the God Aderixo. And my greatest responsibility is the safety of all who dwell in this domain." The Prince-Governor was still prostrate on the ground while he said this since the dragon had not given him permission to rise and neither had he asked for it.

"THEN THOU HAST FAILED IN THY RESPONSIBILITIES SINCE OUR FRIEND JENNIFYRE WAS ACCOSTED

UNDER THY VERY NOSSSE!"

The dragon veritably shrieked this last statement with a huge belch of green flame and cadaverous smoke.

"Then we have failed thee mighty queen. How is it that we might appease thee?"

"THOU ART SMART, RANTZ ECARIN... HOW BE THY FATHER PRINCE DIMITRI?

"Err there has been no one named Dimitry in the Rantz Ecarin dynasty for 8,000 years majesty."

"WHAT IS THAT TO USSS?"

"Nothing of course, great queen." The deprecating smile of the now begrimed royal governor made Blu start with a burst of laughter that was so suddenly out of place in this scene. The governor who was still on the ground looked at him. Blu felt his heart flip flop a little, Aderixo in the Rainbow what a beautiful man!

"Great Drake Queen, what is your bidding?" - this time it was the mage in crimson who spoke. His voice quavered as he asked his question.

"WE HAVE ARISEN AFTER 7,000 YEARS OF SLEEP. SSSOON WE GO TO THE EARTH WELL TO FEED. TAKE JENNIFYRE AND HER SERVANT, MAY IT BE THEY ARE NO LONGER HOUSEWITCHES ON OUR RETURN TO THIS PLACE OR ANY OTHER PLACE THEY MIGHT RESIDE!"

"We hear and we obey great dragon." said the Prince, once more in control of himself after becoming distracted by Blu. Might we rise?"

"NO, BECAUSE OUR LEAVE-TAKING WILL BESCATTER YOUR PUNY CARCASSES!"

And with that she leapt into the air, deceptively agile for a creature of such gigantic size. Nobody rose until she was nothing more than a speck on the horizon. People were now scurrying all over the place doing Aderixo knows what - Blu wasn't paying attention. He kept Jenna from trying to get up.

"Sister sister!" said Blu. "How, HOW did that dragon know your name? How is it that you know that dragon!"

"I do not Blu, I do not know her at all, but I think I called her.."

"You what?" Blu was completely nonplussed.

"Just before we were to die I prayed and I called out the ancient prayer to the earthworm..."

"You know.." said a new voice.

"I always wondered about the words of that poem... asking an earth worm to save you?"

The prince was now standing before them. Dusty, gore splattered and gorgeous. Blu gulped trying his best to compose himself.

"So did you know young lady that the earthworm might actually be an Earth Dragon? - And how did you know that there were still dragons here? The last record of one is many, many generations ago." The prince's voice was golden and smooth.

"My Lord, I did not know at all. I just prayed it since it is the death song of our people and I believed my time had come."

"Alright well your time did not come and you are now the charge of a dragon. You keep powerful allies my lady. We must decide what to do with you."

As far as Blu was concerned the prince's furrowed brow only made him look even more attractive.

Blu noticed that the mages had approached and were looking at him and Jenna curiously. Behind them, the Incausitor, only survivor from his company was being guided away to a coach by more Cause knights who had just arrived. What would they do next? The Archbanner of Cezzareh would have heard the voice of the dragon in his head - everyone had. He would be livid once he learned what had happened. He would report this to the Innarcht.

"My Lord..." said the crimson mage.

"This is the time of the great recruitment of the Prismatic Academy of Magic and the mage recruiters arrive in two weeks time. Perhaps we can test these?" Blu took exception to being called 'these' but he did not show it. He did wonder what magical powers the prince possessed. The Rantz Ecarin dynasty was power personified.

"Indeed I think we have found at least the beginning of our answer but if they fail the test we will be dealing with an extremely agitated dragon should she reappear and I have no doubt she will..." Blu thought that the prince looked thoughtful and handsome.

"We can do a preliminary test on them my Lord. Let us take them to the safety of the Rainbow Mission and make them comfortable." said the Compulsor.

Prince Damian Rantz Ecarin ignored the mage and looked directly at Jenna.

"Is that amenable to you?" he asked.

"Pardon me but I'd much rather go with you my Lord." The moment Jenna said that Blu felt his legs begin to turn to jelly.

"So be it." said the Prince, this time he was looking directly at Blu through beautiful chocolate eyes.

Jenna was carried to the Governor's coach by a hulking Iridescent knight and Blu followed meekly along behind the prince. He could not help but admire the princes shapely legs beneath his tunic and dusty formerly light blue cloak.

Just as the door closed, Blu heard the indigo mage say to the crimson mage.

"I told you he would go home with the prince this day."

And that's when Blu remembered... Indigo is the color of the House of Premonition.

It was a very strange letter.

The roll of fancy parchment bore an unfamiliar seal and Haji opened it cautiously. Despite his fatigue of the night before, he vividly remembered the oddly-dressed man who had intercepted him on his way to the magical academy. The man in his concealing cloaks and hidden face had given Haji a rush of adrenaline reminiscent of the men who had accosted him back home. He'd been at the end of his strength then, too, wounded and lost in one of the castle's old passages. If not for the timely interruption of his friends, Haji would have slipped fully onto that nightmare plane. For just a few seconds, he'd seen a part of himself he never would have believed existed. Knowing that such evil resided within him gave Haji nightmares.

The letters on the scroll swam and flickered as he stared. He'd learned enough bits and pieces about magic to understand that the scroll was bespelled: when he looked sideways at the words, the symbols rearranged themselves into different shapes. The words were no doubt in other languages. It was fascinating, but it gave Haji a headache.

The contents were even more strange. Haji didn't know anyone who might be writing to him; no one back home knew where he was. And why would someone with as ostentatious a name as the "Her Most Imperial Highness, The Princess Royal" be writing to him, anyway? Haji had no letters of introduction to recommend him to anyone, let alone a member of the aristocracy. The name was quite obviously a title, but why would a member of the nobility want to meet a foreign soldier? And how had she even known he was there? It was all very suspicious.

A man sitting down at his table distracted Haji from his musings. He'd been so deeply in thought that he hadn't even noticed the man approach. That could've been unfortunate.

Trained as he was to quickly observe and memorize the slightest details, Haji felt he understood this man instantly. He was too-thin, no doubt a direct result of an obviously nervous temperament. He reminded Haji of a rabbit nibbling on the grass outside his burrow, his body twitching as if a hawk lurked just out of sight. Having not moved a muscle aside from his, Haji wondered if the stranger would bolt the instant he moved.

Haji didn't have much experience dealing with the gentry. Scholars had their place, but that was usually a small and tight-knit community within the army. He'd seen them at the castle, of course, but they looked down their noses at a blood-thirsty barbarian like Haji. On the other hand, an intellectual was just the right sort of person to help Haji sort out a few things.

"Olá," he decided to say, just slightly turning his head and smiling gently. He didn't want to scare what could prove to be his first friend in this hellish city. "E aí?"

I'm bored.

The new students are all stuffy and boring and, although I can do nothing but admit that I was edging towards the same when I first came, I am finding it... well... boring. Either they are yokels who are overawed by everything, or they are nobles for whom everything is beneath them. Did I mention that I'm bored.

If it wasn't for Marc I think I would have gone insane.

Oh, the lessons are easy enough although I am beginning to form a deep suspicion about some of the professors. There is clearly favouritism among them and the trainees and, to me, it seems to be political in basis. I, myself, have no interest in politics. My only desire is to become a recognised mage and to realise my promise as far as I may. Althought... Since my... visit to the old man near the wood, I have felt... strange. it's as if there is a huge destiny laid on my shoulders. I feel that there are great events coming close, wheels turning in the heart of the world. The old gods are stirring and new ones birthing.

There are rumours that dragons have been seen in the kingdoms and the voices of the gods are falling on all kinds of people. I have no interest in hearing the voices of the gods. I can't think of anything worse. I have enough voices in my head as it is. Oh... right... I haven't mentioned the voices yet. They are nothing more than an annoyable at the moment; they babble when it's quiet and whisper when I'm alone. I can't hear what they are saying, which is the really frustrating part.

Marc says that I should sit quietly and meditate, concentrating on getting the pattern and measure of the voices and hope that they grow clearer as the time progresses. The problem is that I find mediatation boring. Oh hell... everything is boring. I really wish that something would happen; something exciting; something... something not boring.

THE PRISMATIC PRATTLER

Dear Reader,

One of the most popular and indeed iconic magical publications is the highly informative and sometimes salacious 'Prismatic Prattler'. Imbued with a mysterious and so far unbreakable masking code, this highly controversial personality profile magazine is beamed magically around the world to all who are capable of receiving it.

Print copies of the transmissions are then produced for the many millions of avid readers who are not magically empowered. From there the contents of the illicit newscrolls are undoubtedly passed along by word of mouth, traveling bard and housewitch to the illiterate masses.

Here then is a snippet of one of the most popular regular features of the Prismatic Prattler which is a roll call directory of the richest most famous inhabitants of the Imperial City. The musings of two supposed 'Ladies of the Court' (Vanilla & Chocolate) have created much outrage and amusement over the years.

Be warned that the penalty for reading this material in public is very harsh indeed, although it is strangely permitted to be read freely within the private confines of ones home. The Order of the Knights Pearlescent accepts no responsibility for the contents of the below material or any related or resultant consequences/outcomes of reading it.

THE PRISMATIC PRATTLER

::: The Prismatic Domain

Dynasty Name :Eras Lux Maxima Eterna

Current Emperor :Ryanis III

Age :1703

Stylized :King Emperor, His Most Prismatic Imperial Majesty, King and Emperor, Summoner of Dragons Sigil :Crowned Bejewelled Dragon on white

Orders :Generation - 100% (Ulturo), Regeneration - 99% (Ulturo) - Instinct - 99% (Ulturo)

Lady Vanilla - The King cancelled all audiences, receiving and official business today. His favorite parakeet, 'Time' passed away at the amazing age of 302. The Shrine of the Beloved, is the favorite haunt of His Majesty' s own Mother the Dowager Empress Tehraz (might she live forever?). Tehraz likes to collect dazzling mechanical and magical birds that fly and sing in a great golden aviary she has had constructed for them. Ryanis relationship with His overbearing mother is complicated to say the least.

She was shocked when her dutiful son chose to marry someone she had not personally selected. It is now common knowledge that Ryanis has a mind of his own. He is seen as a King who likes to negotiate, delegate and actually listen to all except maybe His overbearing Arronite mother. There is a harder side to the King Emperor, but it is not something any sane person would want to see so we will not discuss it... yet.

Madame Chocolate - His Majesty has recently spoken to his Chief Dreamcasters about a recurring dream that is afflicting Him. In the dream He finds Himself running a gauntlet of eye-less teal robed women who are long dead and whose feet are turned backwards. Their bodies fall like dominoes as he runs by and they cry out "Help me, save me! Help me save me!" -- What could it mean?

Age :733

Stylized :Queen and Empress, Summoner of the Rainbow Dawn,

Sigil :Emerald Sunburst on a Field of White

Orders :Clairvoyancy 99% (Ulturo) - Psi-Focus 92%

Lady Vanilla - The world was shocked when His Most Imperial Majesty overlooked the prized daughters of the Prismatic Domain, Sanzion and Der Prinzenhama and his own Stellarcasters to wed the little known civil servant mage - "Deonis of Deor". Nobody had ever heard of Deonis or her homeland of Deor but as time passed this plain speaking, common sensed woman would become a sublime partner and foil for the shy King Emperor.

Deonis' homeland of Deor received such a massive bride price tribute that it went from being an unknown backwater to one of the richest countries in the world. Her love of her husband and children is well known and her disdain of the 'dance of dynasties' and machinations of the politicians even more well known. Many centuries have now passed but her union with her husband the King Emperor appears as strong as ever.

Madame Chocolate - It was her muffins, that won the love of His Majesty, one of the most highly kept secrets in the empire is the recipe for her muffins. She has even refused to reveal the secret to her own husband and daughters. It is rumored the Dowager Empress (who is no fan of Deonis) has spies searching high and low for the recipe.

Sigil :12 Orange Stars on a Field of Lapis

Orders :Telepathy 99% (Ulturo) - Clairvoyancy 99% (Ulturo) - Generation 95%

Lady Vanilla - The dashing and clever Friso is blessed with incredible magical powers to match his striking physical beauty. Attempts to cause friction between he and his older brother are well documented but the closeness he shares with HMIM remains unbroken. The murder of his beloved, Prince Selsior Czosan Der Prinzenhama 740 years ago sent the Imperial High Prince deep into mourning and that continues to this day.

Madame Chocolate - Not that mourning has stopped him from noticing a certain young mage and inspirational performer new to town - his long empty royal box has never been so busy at the Imperial State Theatre. One could wonder when spring will bloom again for all concerned.

Stylized :Scion of the Morning Star, Caller of the Rainbow

Sigil :Prismatic Star on Black

Orders :Generation 99% (Ulturo) - Tele-Kinesis 96% - Alto-Focus 88%

Lady Vanilla - Crown Prince Ameriso seems to have gained the best qualities of both his parents. His mothers common touch and his fathers calmness. Unlike his father he has aquiesced to the Imperial Stellarcasters and taken a princess of Sanzion to wife. Also unlike his father, His Most Imperial Highness Crown Prince Ameriso appears happy to assume the throne sometime over the next few centuries.

Madame Chocolate - Which begs the question, Why did he throw such a temper tantrum that day outside the throne room, smashing not a few priceless vases. Onlookers were agasp! No one saw the Prince from that point until one whole year later the day before he was to wed but we have it on good authority that where his beloved Hydro-Dragon is, there will he be also. Long has the Prince been fond of his uncle Friso's estate out in the boondocks. Nothing like the sticks to salve the savage beast...

Stylized :Imperial Crown Princess, Empress in Waiting

Sigil :The Green Rose of Isolorn on Black

Orders :Regeneration 92% - Psi-Focus 92%

Lady Vanilla - Renowned for her great beauty and fashion sense it is still her nose she is best known for. She is forever sniffing the air, searching for new aromas to distill into her famous perfumes. One has heard that she finds certain scents to be most unpleasant and therefore banished from her presence.., "Eau de Crown Prince" anyone?

Madame Chocolate - Recently, a family in the slumlands of the 'End of the Rainbow' district found themselves the beneficiaries of a generous and anonymous friend. A highly unusual fungus grows in the cellar of that familys home and it creates the most interesting sexual response from among the male population. She may not much like her husband but she does not lack for passion. The Zionfells of Sanzion are many things but boring is not one of them.

Sigil :White Unicorn on Blue

Orders :Precognition 94% - Compulsion 90% - PsiFocus 76%

Lady Vanilla - The mysterious, remote and untouchable Princess Royal is definitely not one to be trifled with. Although it is never offocially acknowledged it is widely known that she is a Deathcaster of frightening great power. Her disdain of the Crown Princess Adreana is plain for all to see - Karalise is not one to suffer fools or Sanzionfells.

Tall and blonde with winter ice blue eyes she possesses a willowy body and an unearthly beauty yet she refuses all suitors brave enough to beg her company. Although word is in the wind that her doting father is finally about to rein her in and force a suitable marriage upon her. Who will it be?

Madame Chocolate - There is no true winter here. The leaves never fall and yet there is a tree that shivers and is forever crying... This tree bears no leaves. It is the only tree in all of the royal gardens that is never pruned. This is a favorite refuge for a certain royal. A rival royal has taken to meditating at the same time of day only across the pond from the lonely tree.

Can meditation be likened to chess, if so then one can believe there is a contest of wills going on. Like two great 'Hama-cats' they make a point of not noticing the other, they spend all day polishing their nails, waiting to strike. But is anyone winning?

Sigil :Red Sparrow on Green

Orders :Instinct 90% Generation 84%

Lady Vanilla - The darkly beautiful Delar, famous for her golden eyes and lustrously long black hair. The strongest female instinctualist in the world is said to be able to mindspeak any animal and the care of such creatures has consumed her for 300 years. She has said that she finds animals to be better conversationalists than men yet scandalous rumors have begun to circulate surrounding the Imperial Princess and her relationship to a certain half-elf royal from Rokikan.

Madame Chocolate - Why buy the cow if the milk is free for they say it is one way to keep away royal suitors. It will work for a few decades maybe more, but eventually she will wed - her father will not wait forever. But there is more - this romance may make history in the event of a birth. We all know how difficult it is for the exalted to conceive and especially with other races if the psi-healer mages are to be believed. Yet legend does say that it has happened before. Why else did Rokikan - one of the grandest of elven nations join the empire?

Lady Vanilla - The youngest daughter and second youngest child of the Monarch is the stunning and energetic Imperial Princess Cianf. She is a true socialite in every way and is the most active of all the exalted always making sure to keep her social calendar full far beyond the obligatory royal engagements. Songs have been written about her sizzling emerald eyes and sonnets composed for her hair of fire but none of them ever seem to be able to tell for sure in which direction the princess likes to look?

Madame Chocolate - It is reported that Princess Cianf is having an unofficial portrait commissoned. A 'Nude-stand' atop the steps of such-and-such a fountain, you know the one with the nine heads and rainbow colors. Who is the artist you might ponder, or should we say who are the artistes? The Castenada Twins are in town, famous throughout the empire for the dual portrait technique - both working the subject into a firey passionate surrender. Which twin will she respond to best? Eriko or Erika? Perhaps she will enjoy both equally. Referring to the painting of course.

Queen Empress Dowager :Her Imperial Majesty Tehraz (Nee Arronite)

Age :2812

Stylized :Empress Dowager

Sigil :White Lily on Lavender

Orders :Telepathy 95% - Premonition 88%

Lady Vanilla - Mother of the King Emperor and oldest being alive with the exception of the very oldest dragons... Tehraz of the blood so blue that some have called her more royal than the man she married, former King Emperor Xirius I. Does she still pull secret strings that make puppets jump 10,000 leagues away? Does she still hear the whispers on the winds of a hundred summers ago? From within the gilded cage of her golden aviary. On a lawn of sparkling emeralds she sits surrounded by her mechanical and magical bejewelled birds. Listening to every word, sensing every thought.

Madame Chocolate - What praises have not been gratefully given to this woman over the years? But her scorn is remarkable for its length and vitriol. Even now people retell her singing with joy the night her husband died - Rainbow rest His soul. Such a comfort was her song to all the people... The Imperial Empress Dowager is looking younger than ever and has her eye on someone far younger than herself. No Empress has ever lived more than a century beyond her husbands death. Tehraz is entering her fourth century since the death of the old Emperor.

Remeleth had been taught that it was rude to stare, so he did *not* stare at the dark-skinned stranger, because it was rude. He kept his eyes fixed on his plate of foodstuffs as he worked on the toast, nearly finished with it as he was suddenly spoken to.

He jumped, the language was foreign, yes, but he recognized it, his brow furrowed as he scrambled to remember what little of it he'd learned through his travels with His Highness, "Ah…. Olá, você fala Comum?" He was fairly certain his accent was very poor, and his dialect was all wrong, and he'd conjugated his verb poorly, very, very poorly. Really it was butchered. He paused… "And woe? Is that what you said? Hello and woe?" His brow furrowed, then he flushed, turning his face back to the plate, unsure of what to say next. He clenched his hands in his lap, trying to get them not to shake. "I… Meu nome é Remeleth." He mumbled.

He swallowed and ducked his head, "I'm Remeleth." He whispered, hiding behind the little bit of bangs he had, his face felt aflame, embarrassed for his outburst, and embarrassed for speaking to what very well could be a foreign dignitary that way. Oh had he still been an apprentice, his Master would have had his balls for that. And a sound reprimand, and so many other things. He seemed to shrink in on himself with each passing second, attempting to hide, really he was a piteous coward, at least he knew he was, that was a step up.

It's been two days since I decided to visit the waterfalls to see why I feel such a draw there. The flowers insist that I visit before the king's arrival today, so I've decided to spend this afternoon to see what I can find.

Classes today were incredibly dull. They were teaching us to open up and speak with the animals around us in our Instinct class, but I've been able to do that since the moment I arrived. The lilies know far more about the workings of magic than the professors, it seems.

No one stopped me on the way to the waterfalls, but then why would they? It's a common site for the apprentices to be wandering around exploring when they have no classes. Besides, there are very few apprentices, and the people of the city go out of their way to be friendly.

Approaching the waterfalls, I felt a strong buildup of energy, as if there was an unseen force to keep people out. All of a sudden, I felt a sharp prick at the tip of my thumb, and as a drop of blood fell to the grass below my feet the resistance disappeared. Slightly wary of invisible people with sharp objects, I crept towards the waterfall while trying my best not to disturb anything that may decide to poke me again (or worse).

As I came closer to the waterfall at the bottom, I noticed a gap between it and the wall, large enough for a full grown man to easily pass through. I glanced around to make sure no one was watching, for I was certain I shouldn't be here, I walked up to the entrance and slipped inside.

I'm not sure what I was expecting to find. A tall well lit tunnel led to a massive cavern beyond which shimmered with thousands of crystal lights like the ones in the city. Such a discovery was certainly not on my list. As I walked down the tunnel into the cavern, I was able to start making out a shape at the end. It appeared to be a large cathedral type structure, with pillars made out of some sort of crystal. The pillars came in every colour of the rainbow, and as I got closer I could tell they were actually diamond structures, made for channelling huge amounts of power.

As I entered the room, I heard a voice, sounding old as time, speak out.

"Welcome Derix is'Lorn, child of Shadow!"

I stopped and the hairs on the back of my neck seemed to sizzle with electricity.

"Who are you?" I called to the room, chilled to the core, for no one in Beauhamelais knew my full name.

It spoke with an imperious voice. I imagine it would be the kind of voice that could make oceans rage and mountains crumble, it replied - "I am Carthuul'ak Rahn, Guardian of the Sacred Places, Keeper of the Well of Magic, Holder of the Relics of Time. "

"Why did you call me child of shadow? Am I evil?" Fear ran my blood cold, for the Shadows were the eternal enemy of the Prismatic Kingdom and even the Erixoians.

"We are all good and evil, the actions we take gives perception to others and thus they perceive us as such. Tell me, son of Dreams, have you done anything to warrant being called evil?"

Fidgeting uncomfortably, for this being was undoubtedly powerful and knew a great many things, Derix replied as best he could.

With a booming laugh, the voice replied, "Then you have nothing to fear! Come, let us get to the reason I brought you here!”

The ground started to ripple and flow, the golden marble moving like water. A bulge started to form in the middle, rippling upwards until it formed a vaguely rectangular shape. Suddenly, the top of the shape broke and, like liquid gold, slid down the sides of a beautiful jewelled chest.

“Open it. Inside you will find gifts fit for one of your station.”

What station that may be, the spirit didn't say, and Derix was too off-balance to ask.

When I approached the chest the top slowly swung open, revealing a necklace and two rings made of what appeared to be diamonds and other precious stones. The necklace was mostly made of black diamond, with inlaid rubies in the shape of a dragon. The rings were both similar, as one was black diamond with a band of rubies, and one was black diamond with a band of colourless diamonds.

“As all things, the true value of these items will only be revealed in time. For now, know that they will increase your power substantially. If asked where you found them, tell them they have been in your family for generations and have been returned to you by a friend, for it will be the truth.”

“Uh thank you? - but I don't understand this... I'm just and boy from Liirium, lucky enough to have been adopted by a good family after they found me wandering on the beach as a three year old. I have no birthright!”

“These are yours by right of birth, whether you believe it or not. As such no thanks are necessary. Take up your birthright. Place the necklace over your head, and the rings on the middle finger of each hand.” The voice sounded proud, as if it had accomplished a great task.

So I did what I was bid and adorned myself with the three priceless items. As soon as they were in place, I felt a great surge of energy fill me, the likes of which I've never felt before. I instantly knew that the relics belonged to me, and I felt comfortable wearing them as if I had worn them all my life. They belonged to me.

“And now, the last thing before you go,” the voice paused, as the wall near the back of the room slid away, “This is Tarza, she will help you on your journey. Treat her well, for she is the only one of her kind.” As he was speaking, a black Hama-cat cub leaped out of the new opening, ran up to me, and began to purr as she nudged me with her head. She was only the size of a medium sized dog at the moment and I had never seen a hama-cat in the flesh; they were so rare but I knew that by time she finished growing she would be larger than a horse and unimaginably deadlier.

Amazed at my good fortune I reached down to pet her, and that's when I noticed her eyes were pure black, as were her claws and teeth. Everything glistened like a black abyss, even her tongue was black. This certainly was no ordinary Hama-cat!

“She will be a wonderful ally when things are hard, and a marvellous companion when all is well. Before you leave, I have one last piece of advice. No matter where you go, carry a member of the Solum with you. They will not die if picked by you, and you will always have an extra fount of wisom at your disposal. Now go, I have things I must prepare for the coming of the King.

My walk back to the Academy was accompanied by strange glances and outright shock, yet the people of Beauhamelais were accustomed to people wearing costly adornments and leading strange and wonderful pets so they handled it a lot better than the people of my hometown would have if only barely.

I was still buzzing with excitement over my discoveries so instead of returning to the academy I decided to keep walking. I needed to clear my head. I walked and walked and day turned to twilight. Tarza padded along sometimes ahead of me sometimes behind me. Suddenly she went off in one direction so quickly I nearly tripped over myself in startlement. A cloud of feathers went up into the air shortly after... I left her to feed and kept walking.

I must have walked for another quarter of an hour and I heard a slight rustling behind me. I thought it was Tarza but when I turned around a man leaped from the bushes, brandishing a sword.

“It isn't safe for kiddies so far from the city, no not safe at all,” he leered at me.

“I like the look of yer necklace and yer rings. Hand them over, and I'll let you go. Otherwise, I may decide I will just take them.”

Rage filled me, unlike anything I had ever felt before. These relics belong to me, to my family, how dare he think to take them?

I began to feel power pouring into me, and as it did, my light blond hair darkened, and my eyes became pure black. Not knowing what I was doing, I reached out with my mind, hoping to knock him unconscious. Instead, a black tendril flowed from where I was standing, and latched onto his chest. Instantly, I knew what was happening.

I was somehow controlling the shadows to leech off his energy. I could feel myself growing stronger, even as he started to sway. When he fell to the ground, too weak to stand, I let go of the flow of energy. The extra energy, however, had nowhere to go. Not able to contain it, I fell to my knees, as it started to burn inside my veins. Letting out a scream, I tried to force the energy out of my body. Where was Tarza?

An explosion shook the air, as a pillar of pure darkness as wide as I was tall exploded out of the area, disappearing somewhere above the clouds. The last thing I saw, before losing consciousness, were the leaves fall from the trees around me, dead.

Dear Reader,

Our perusal of the highly contentious publication; The Prismatic Prattler continues...

Today we look at the the the Prattlers latest report for the sublimely powerful Arronite and DeKodenvarrah dynasties who after the Imperial Dynasty represent the two most powerful of the 12 great families of the Prismatic Domain. They exert massive influence over the outer Federations as well with the formidable Arronites supporting the Western federations like Der Prinzenhama, Ernuin, Carmanis and Indiron whilst the warlike DeKodenvarrahs' favor the Eastern federations like Sanzion, Kananiakan, Rokikan and Arlad.

Be warned that the penalty for reading this material in public is very harsh indeed, although it is strangely permitted to be read freely within the private confines of ones home. The Order of the Knights Pearlescent accepts no responsibility for the contents of the below material or any related or resultant consequences/outcome of reading it.

THE ARRONITES

High Prince Kirshaw Arronite III

Age - 160

Stylized - HRH, His Royal Grace, Lord Chancellor

ORDERS - Telepathy 92% Regeneration 90%

Lady Vanilla - He is the Lord Chancellor of the Prismatic Domain meaning he is responsible for the governance and oversight of the Imperial City and the surrounding Prismatic Domain. The High Prince has been very aggressive with his campaign to introduce certain social standards and controls upon all citizens within the Prismatic Domain. His wide ranging policies include compulsory military service for all, education for all children, public hygeine and the particularly controversial compulsory magical marking of every citizen. The High Prince is said to be one of the 12 greatest swordsmen and duellists in the empire having won the Empress Tourney of Swords six times. Not a great fan of his ancient ancestor the Empress Dowager Tehraz.

Madame Chocolate - If there was ever a ladies man under the rainbow sky, his name was Kirshaw. 'A "Lady" a day keeps boredom away' was his motto. Strange how he ended up. Happy and devoted to his little book worm. He showers her with memorial libraries of every shape size in locations all over the empire. And in return, she notices him in public once or twice. Now what happens in private is another story altogether.

High Princess Abcynthie Arronite (Nee Santamo)

Age - 130

Stylized - Her Royal Highness

ORDERS - Clairvoyancy 87% Psi-focus 86%

Lady Vanilla - Her Royal Highness is beloved among the people for her initiatives to better the lives of the citizens of the Prismatic Domain. It was she who lobbied her husband the High Prince for the mandatory schooling of all prismatic children in the basics of reading, writing and arithmatic. Subsequently this has seen a blossoming revolution in the growing numbers of people leaving the poorer classes and graduating to higher social existences. She is said to be one of the smartest people in the empire - man or woman. Her family of course are academics of great renown.

Madame Chocolate - Cynthy grew up with books. A lonely child. Caring nothing for fancy clothes or combs in her hair. As she grew older her desire to work in the Great Library of the Empire became her most fervent dream and it came true of course the family did have connections after all. It is here that she one day reprimanded a loud pompous young fool who was talking about what a waste of space books were. He became her husband. And she became a beacon of literacy for the whole of Rainbow City, asking for and receiving her fondest wishes.

Prince Terro Arronite

Age - 38

Stylized - His Royal Highness

ORDERS - Premonition 90% Telepathy 85%

Lady Vanilla - The heir to the Arronite throne is tipped to be a more reasonable ruler and like his father he will one day administrate the Prismatic Domain on behalf of the King-Emperor. At this time however he seems far more interested in pursuing his musical career which is very interesting indeed. Whereas some people hear nothing but a strange buzzing coming out of his diamond rainbowflute - others swear they can hear and even see the future! His relationship with the Kodenvarrah warrior prince Jopac-Kanikor is said to be extremely close although they appear to have nothing in common at all.

Madame Chocolate - His Highness is one of the most popular of the elite especially among the young men. It is reported that young Terro is in love with all the members of his little quartet. Imagine what will happen when his father buys him an orchestra! He has controversial views about male and female roles but his father doesn't want to hear. Prince Terro is his mother made over into a man. Only his obsessions run more to music. And all the music he composes sounds so strange and wild and frantic like bees gone mad in a cat house. Well it's different - young people today.

Prince Arterion Arronite

Age - 137

Stylized - His Highness

ORDERS - Tele-kinesis 90% Telepathy 87%

Lady Vanilla - Arterion is considered to be more true to the Arronite genes than his illustrious older brother Kirshaw - at least nowadays. Arterion is said to be anti libertarian, anti public freedoms, pro conquest and definitely anti Cause. He is a complex man who appears to long for the days when all people who were not Exalted, elite or rainbow magic users were slaves. It is said that his grandmother 5 times removed (Empress Dowager Tehraz) is one of his most trusted advisors.

Madame Chocolate - Arterion is still known to call the hunt. He doesn't kill anyone.., that we know of. But considering the state his victims are left in - it should be against all the laws of nature. He gets away with it through delegation and a lot of gold. A small amount to him but riches to the ambitious or the desperate. The interesting thing is many professional fighters have enlisted in the hunt as a way of testing their metal. It is a blooding event. And Arterion always ends the day in blood.

Lady Vanilla - A political marriage if ever there was one - the beautiful and petite redhead (for which the De Zalenatente's are famous) is the one. Her glowing pink eyes are disturbing to some but alluring to others - could it be her magnificent powers of compulsion assist her in always getting her way? Known as the 'Pink Princess' she is always one of the most easily recognizable and spectacularly dressed members of the imperial court resplendent as always in various shades of pink and white. She frequently wears one of the five legendary Arronite ulturo-crowns. A gorgeous and mightily powerful hovering halo of black diamonds, rubies, garnets and of course... a mines worth of pink diamonds.

Madame Chocolate - Autry has the reddest hair ever seen, and the whitest most unblemished skin, the smallest feet, the daintiest hands, sweetest smile, and the VILEST temper known to man. Servants are known to die when she is displeased and her appetite for pink diamonds is such that her father made sure to marry her into the Arronite clan because they own two pink diamond mines. She cannot conceive -- or is she determined not to?

THE DEKODENVARRAH'S

High Prince Arexius De Kodenvarrah

Age - 148

Stylized - His Royal Highness The Warlord, Il Dominante

ORDERS - Psycho-kinesis 97% Telekinesis 96%

Lady Vanilla - Arexius was born on the back of a great fire drake in the depths of Mt Nemro in Kananiakan thus the tales about his volcanic temper seem very appropriate. He is the Emperors champion and also the most experienced general in the empire. Arexius may be quick tempered but he is also highly gifted in that other art the De Kodenvarrahs excel at.., thoroughness [sic] - obsessive compulsive disorder.

Nothing escapes his notice for long and fine details, especially in war matters are a speciality. Arexius is outspoken in his dislike of anything to do with the Cause and has made it clear what he would like to do to the Innarcht. The De Kodenvarrah clan enjoy a strong relationship with the Zionfells of Sanzion. Like the Zionfells, the De Kodenvarrahs foster a strong alliance with the monstrous Fire Drakes of Sanzion.

Madame Chocolate - The most formidable Warlord of the age is known to be unmatchable on the field of battle, a pity he has the same reputation at the dinner table. He passes wind with the same deadly force of his sword and cares not a whit who may be nearby. When he becomes intoxicated he likes to play axe-throwing games using beautiful serving girls as 'target holders.' He once burned his Summer Palace down when Karalise the Princess Royal called him a 'complete and utter bore'. The fire burned for eleven days and nights and could be seen from the Dome of the Palais Anais in distant Ernuin. Hundreds of lives were extinguished.

High Princess Pencelia De Kodenvarrah (nee Zandenburn)

Age - 121

Stylized - Her Royal Highness

ORDERS - Generation 89% Tele-kinesis 88%

Lady Vanilla - The High Princess has received great acclaim for her research into diseases of the mind and how Psi-generative powers can be used to restore the minds of the mentally ill. Her groundbreaking research is but one side of a very complex character. It is well known that she is not well enamored of her husband - nor is he of her, however she does have a deep love for their three children. She also likes to party.

Madame Chocolate - Pencelia is never within ten miles of her husband. Except at compulsory court occasions she never talks to her husband and most certainly she has never shared his bed. All their children were conceived via the magical invitro service. Arexius did his thing at one end and Pen later received his deposit at her end. What pregancy panache! The rest of her time is spent with her secret, not so secret lover, Princess Ecru Remhall at their sumptuous pleasure palace high above the Crescent of Nina in the Illicit Quarter.

Princess Riri-Moana De Kodenvarrah

Age - 75

Stylized - Her Highness

ORDERS - Psycho-kinesis 90% Generation 84%

Lady Vanilla - Tall, muscular, hawkish and agile it often shocks first time viewers to realize that Riri-Moana is actually female not male. She wishes to become the first ever female Warlord and though her famous father thinks the idea is laughable and stupid, her even more famous 'Uncle' the King Emperor thinks it is a great idea. Her magical and fighting skills are deadly, she graduated first in her year at the Imperial College of Generals and she already has the support of six Sanzionic Firedragons. She holds a great love for her younger brothers neither of whom wish to become Warlords. The fantastically beautiful Princess Melanesia d'Ernuin is her lover.

Madame Chocolate - Riri sleeps with her pets, two orphaned tiger dragettes. They follow her everywhere she permits. And are often given treats. The fingers of the men she defeats in mock practice. This would be frowned upon but she always insists on regrowing their fingers afterwards. Riri is probably the greatest fighting woman in the empire - but if you ask her she would disagree. She is the greatest female warrior in the world and someday she hopes to take that one step further again.

Prince Jopaco-Kanikor De Kodenvarrah

Age - 40

Stylized - His Highness

ORDERS - Psycho-kinesis 94% Generation 93% Tele-kinesis 90%

Lady Vanilla - Jopaco should have been the perfect son. Tall, handsome, strong, and deadly at his craft he is the son any man would want to have. But he disagrees with his destiny. He does not want to inherit the mantle of Warlord from his mighty Sire and nor he does wish to be a future Scion over his vaunted dynasty. Jopaco just wants to keep studying the potentials of how psycho-kinesis can be used in warfare. He has created a secret new use of the power which if it works out will make him the greatest pyro-mage in 10,000 years. He has no time to become a future warlord or scion. 'Paco' possesses the rare triplicate order sequence. It is most fortunate that his incredibly driven De Kodenvarrah will is countered by his mothers sense of joy, fun and ease. But only just.

Madame Chocolate - Sometimes when two clouds collide, you will get thunder and lighting, or even a tornado. That explains Riri. But what explains her brother then, who is like a slow soft rain while the sun shines and rainbows blossom. With a quick wit, a tune to whistle and deadly psycho-kinetic daggers hidden in his fingertips, he is perhaps the most underestimated and lethal delight in all of the empire. The High Princess Omhautry Arronite discovered that when she tried to hypnotize then suffocate his beloved sister Riri-Moana. Jopaco is under extraordinay pressure from his father to accept his destiny as the next Imperial Warlord. Jopaco's dark smoldering De Kodenvarrah looks never go unnoticed for long - except by the one he most wants to notice.

Prince Sinkemme De Kodenvarrah

Age - 28

Stylized - His Highness

ORDERS - Psycho-kinesis 100% Generation 83%

Lady Vanilla - There are nasty rumors that it was not in fact his father Arexius who burned the De Kodenvarrah Summer Palace down, it was Sinkemme who would have been all of 12 months old at the time. Even more preposterous is the story about how he actually managed to do that. But on another note we have to accept that this fey and unpredictable prince does seem to like exploring. The amount of times he disappeared as a child sent his mother to the Compulsors for mind treatment. Could it be that Simkemme is able to disappear into thin air and remain completely undetectable to all magic - rainbow or otherwise?

Madame Chocolate - 'Sin' is rumored to be a blank spot. I know this is a complete myth. Nothing so amazing could ever exist. Why our culture is filled with stories of these supposed extraordinary mages is beyond me. So he disappears and no one can find him. That doesn't mean it is true. I mean really?. It is said that he likes the common man better than his own class. Surely not! It is also said that he can become pure flame... fables! He would be the greatest weapon on earth if he could. And possibly the most powerful elementalist in the world. They would'nt dare kill him would they? or would they???

Well, my boredom has been lifted a little by a very interesting publication that has found its way into the academy. I understand that it is frowned upon to read it in public and i am wondering what fun it might be to do so. I am not familiar with many of the dignitaries discussed but those I do know are talked about with such irrverance that it makes me laugh aloud.

I am a little concerned as I seem to have been attracting unwarranted attention from the trainers and teachers recently. Their eyes seem to watch me as I move and there seem to be many conversations in corridors that are cut short when I approach. What little I have been able to discover seems to suggest that they believe I may be gathering information for some purpose. I can't imagine why. I have spoken to Marc of it and he tells me to ignore them; but it's not easy.

As for what information I am supposed to be gathering, well... It appears to me that there is something going on generally as the whole academy is abuzz with some strange energy and there is a guarded excitement in the air. This excitement is not the expectation of good things but the expectation of something coming that is unmeasured and unknown; perhaps feared. No one is saying anything overtly and it appears as if the other students are as ignorant as I.

In my boredom I have taken to wandering the corridors and I have found some interesting doors that are tucked away behind curtains or at the top of unused staircases. As of yet I have managed to enter only one to find nothing of note, other than some evidence of occupation a long time ago. I did find a letter but it is in a language I do not understand. I have taken it and will take it to Marc the next time I visit. He may be able to help me translate. One thing that I have been able to decipher though and that is the signature. High Lord Arran Tenning. I have never heard of him.

From the Generation Lounge at the Imperial Academy of Magic in the Prismatic City

My dearest Kirscha,

Well I know I promised to write you every week but you can appreciate how busy it gets here every 12 years. Although I know that I said in my last missive that my heart wasn't in it, I beg to differ now. My goodness there is so much going on here and I so wish you were here to help/share it with me.

Students continue to trickle in but with one week to go I can tell you already that the class is going to be smaller than I have ever seen it. We will be lucky to see anymore than two handfuls of threshers this cycle but what is interesting is that this intake appears to possess raw ability like nothing I have ever seen in my life! Every single one of them are blessed to degrees that should not be available to a mere thresher.

I remember when you first entered the Academy my love, you were head and shoulders the most naturally talented student in your cycle but as much as it galls me to say it - in this lot you would be just another face in the crowd, albeit such an extraordinary crowd! I know you might say that only the most gifted of all the prospective mages in the empire get to attend the Academy anyway but even with that in mind, we are looking at an extraordinary group here.

The fey girl I told you about earlier, she who goes into the forest to visit Marc, continues to intrigue me. Nobody seems to know her name and her testing card is blacked out in the identification box. This means the hand of the Amscion is upon her which tells me we are treating with a child of immense power and deep mystery, she veritably reeks of it!

I have seen her drifting about like a shadow, she never walks - she appears always to drift, almost float, as if she is some ethereal elf or something and, by the look of her, I would not be surprised if there is elven heritage there. Marc refuses to say a word but is that any surprise? You already know the dream I had which included you and her but I just hope the frightening portents of that dream are not true. Although it would be wondrous to have you back here with me. I think that very soon I will be summoning the child to my offices where I shall attempt to learn her story.

A boy arrived at the front gates the other day. He was on the back of a cart having hitched a ride with a troupe of gypsy players. He looked like a scarecrow, like an absolute urchin except for the fact that tiny rainbow stars danced all about him. He was as timid as a mouse in a cat house, but, given time, his shuffle will turn into a stride. His testing card says that he is from the Great Forest and he shows remarkable generative and premonitory powers. Despite his appalling lack of suaveness, this child has a sharp eye and I sense a great Stellarcaster in him. If only he could talk about something other than the weather...

At the other end of the spectrum is a very well heeled man from Torlisen. His name is Steven the Lucky although it remains to be seen just how lucky he really is. Somehow I doubt his luck will afford him any advantages at the academy. He has an impressive mix of metafocus and compulsion accompanied by what appears to be a very strongly developed intellect. You would have been his lecturer for compulsion if you were still here my love. I think that he will be a very viable option to work among the royal court mages because of his refinement.

There is a very interesting native of the Cause City. He is a very quiet and extremely intense young man who looks like he has been through the mill in recent years. Old Master Drafor told me in his typically effusive manner that this boy displays some highly unusual telepathic-telekinetic qualities that will break new ground in both disciplines. I told you we have an extraordinary lot to deal with this cycle! Taigh was the sole person to be tested within the Cause territories altogether. Not one other soul presented themselves to the Rainbow Mission there for testing!

I try not to smile as I write about the Northroner and his Northron friend from distant Carmanis. Young Count Dugan of Bannatyne, son of the Duke who is the cousin of the Carmanic King. His father is a Duke who is Lord over the largest clan of the North. The boy told me so himself! He and his mischievous cousin/manservant are imbued with endless Northron charm and the exuberance of youth. But added to this is a potent dose of generation mixed with metafocus that quite excited me as Overseer of the faculty of Generation. This earnest young man is destined for an extraordinary life if he can reach his true potential. There is somewhat of that famed warrior spirit of the North about him too.

Speaking of warrior spirit a man whose spirit oozes essence of warrior has arrived from a city-state outside of the empire called 'Arian' - never heard of it? Well neither have I. I took a look at the Atlas-scope and discovered his home is on the far Western side of the Great Kreshan Desert. He is an interesting character and I sense something frightening hanging over him; something to do with powers greater than you and me my dear. He is very well mannered and courteous and he seems skilled in the ways of the court which intrigues me. Aside from the fact that he is a deathcaster of most hideously powerful aspect!

You would be most pleased and pleasantly surprised to know that our favorite wizard without a clue has returned for reasons as yet unknown! Yes just 6 days ago young Remeleth managed to actually return to the keep without tripping over his robes and I must say he wears the richest most wondrous wizardly garments these days. He was most devastated to hear that you had been exiled to 'wildest Sanzion', even though I am sure he already knew. I know that he met with the Academy Head, Madame Blarovskaya, who looked completely nonplussed when I came across her in the Masters Lounge shortly thereafter.

She told me he was unable to say why he had been sent back to the keep - he did not elucidate, but he gave the impression that His Most Serene Grace Amscion Friso was not as pleased with him as he had been originally and thus Remeleth was now surplus to the needs of that most lofty Prince. But my dear Kirscha, neither Maria Blarovskaya nor I believe a word of it! That boy is back here on some kind of mission and somebody will be so busy laughing at his klutziness that they will not notice his snooping around inside of their most secret thoughts until it is far too late! So long as it is not me.

But quite possibly the greatest commotion of all these intriguing events occurred just yesterday when a rare Earth Dragon of indeterminately great age and truly immense size touched down on the psycho kinetic training field outside the Academy and demanded to speak with the Amscion. She was most unimpressed when Madame Blarovskaya humbly apologized and informed her that the Amscion was away at one of his many private hunting estates and would not be returning until Winterfest.., such as it is here.

She then swiped the top off a tower in agitation before instructing in no uncertain terms that two of her 'charges' will soon be arriving and we would be wise to see to their needs and education whatever they may be. Suffice to say Maria Blarovskaya acquiesced quickly. I have no doubt that we were in the presence of one of the great monsters of yore because her voice was heard inside the minds of millions of people within a radius of many miles.

I have never experienced the phenomenom in my life. The Lord Archmage Imperial graced us by coming out of his palace on the Rainbowmount to check that we all hadn't been immolated. He told me that the first two generations of elemental dragons born from their mystical Cosmic ancestors possessed the ability to speak directly into the minds of all peoples over great distances. This means the great Earth dragon we encountered may well be born from the original elemental brood that hatched around 12,000 years ago. Incredible!

Several great fire drakes came down from the Rainbowmount to investigate and immediately gave obeisance to her upon seeing her and hearing her clarion challenge. We are taught that the largest of all dragons are fire-drakes of Sanzion yet only one of the seven giant males exceeded her in size and yet he did not dare challenge her.

When they again took flight, she led the phalanx to the Rainbowmount where she met with His Most Imperial Majesty the Emperor. Nobody knows what happened at that meeting but we do know that she took flight for Sanzion the next morning accompanied by the greatest phalanx of dragons seen in many generations. Fire-drakes, Hydro-dragons, Air-drakes and Earth-dragons accompanied their apparent new queen in a rare show of draconic unity.

Millions came out to see the show as they flew slowly North up the River Rainbow in stately procession before speeding up and veering sharply East for the volcanoes of your far distant Sanzion prison. News of this special dragon has become the biggest talking point in the capital, everybody is abuzz about it and I heard that even the Prismatic Prattler will be carrying a feature on the arrival of the ancient dragon in this weeks edition - as we will probably read in the privacy of our own chambers and no doubt whisper about in quiet corners.

Something is afoot my dear! My dreams speak of it and the times they shift and change like never I have seen. You should be here Kirscha! I have told you many times that you are a child of destiny. The City of Destiny is here yet you are there in Sanzion. I pray that somehow you will be returned here so that you can fulfill your destiny, whatsoever that may be! Be careful there in Sanzion, be ever mindful of the machinations of the Sanzionfells, I trust not that family. They are more unpredictable than an Axajian summer!

I love you my dear beyond dragon or exalted, war or cataclysm. I love you beyond all things.

Haji blinked. After a pause, his face cracked into an embarrassed smile before he chuckled and said, "Desculpe -- I do beg your pardon, Senhor Remeleth." He carefully weighed the unfamiliar words in his mouth before speaking. However good he'd become at learning new languages during his travels, Haji still only knew enough bits and pieces to get by. He flushed lightly as he realized he'd spoken his first words to this new man without thought. He did find it fascinating that this stranger understood his home tongue.

"Um, no, no 'woe' here. At least not currently." He smiled to indicate a joke, thinking of how well he'd been treated since passing through the city gates. "Yes, I speak common, albeit badly. Você fala português? I suppose I should have said 'bom dia' first, which means 'good morning.' What I meant to say is 'how are you?'"

As they spoke, one of the serving girls came by with more of the hot, spiced drink Haji had taken to drinking in this land so far from home. He smiled up at her and thanked her graciously, but his words didn't seem to soothe her much. He glanced beyond the retreating maid and noticed that the tables had filled, and none of those people wanted to meet his gaze. Lifting his mug to hide his frown, Haji wondered for perhaps the thousandth time if coming to this city had been a good idea.

His eyes fell on the half-unfurled scroll. Was it something to do with this scroll? He didn't think he'd been coerced into a trap... Of course, the events that had driven him from Arian had also made him unnaturally suspicious of everything and everyone.

The Prismatic City - Sanctuary of Isolorn - Korisant Palace - Official Residence of the Princess Royal

The young mage's mind wandered...

He thought about his fine new Eladir crafted ruling chair. It certainly wasn't an Auric chair – only an ulturo-master could maintain those, but it was one of the costliest most exquisite pieces of furniture that could be bought. The young mage was now rich and his wealth would only increase for he had made it! He was now listed in the Royal Directory of Mages, a public record of those few elite magicians with whom the Exalted and the Elite kept appointments. He had a royal warrant after his name now and that pretty much secured his future.

Yes he had risen swiftly in recent days. Word of his appointment to the Imperial Princess Royal had spread fast and he had been able to hire on five extra staff to run his humble little office and another five to run his household. Very soon he would be moving out of his humble Crescent of Nina digs for a spacious suite within the affluent Tumbling Falls district directly below the steep southern face of the great mountain.

He was grateful to his Grand Master who had given him the opportunity of a lifetime to serve one of the greatest practitioners of magic in the world. Yet he still burned with the sudden memory of his one galling moment of shame in front of the legendary deathcaster princess. He shuddered to think what her possible reactions could have been. She could have cast an irreversible death spell upon him, she could have had him executed by someone else, she could have blacklisted him, which, to his mind, would have been worse than execution. She could have ridiculed him.

But she did not. Instead, he had received a darkly gleaming Ulturo grade black diamond to lock into his young ulturo-crown. There could be no greater honor! Outside of the most exalted royal family and various members of the elite, he had never seen black diamonds in the crowns of any but the most powerful of deathcasters, and there were so few of them. Of course she never gave it to him personally - a very proud Master Esperlan did but the glowing card that accompanied it was all the explanation he needed.

The young mage had gone over to the Academy of Magic just the other day – ostensibly to show off and the reactions on seeing his prized new black diamond was just as he had expected. The few young precognitionists he encountered stopped him and demanded to see his new prize before exclaiming in awe when he related his account of serving the most powerful deathcaster alive. Most of these young deathcasters would die in training.

The price for trying to draw out the power of the rarest of all the magical arts was death for all but the strongest and in the last half century only a couple had survived the Precognition course. One of the deathcasters, a slightly older more experienced looking one did not come to inspect the diamond. Instead he just stood back watching carefully with his jaw clenched. What was wrong with him?

The young mage forgot about the strange soldier-like deathcaster and strode around like a peacock the rest of that day, even the great mages like Grandmaster Drafor Pathforger and Madame Isolde Endrainbow had stopped to carefully question him and inspect his crown. Such is the draw of the rarest stone of all, the black diamond!

Madame Isolde did ask a few questions about his own Grandmaster Esperlan. Obviously she knew him and had probably taught him before he graduated and left the academy to make his own way in the world. The young mage was always on tenterhooks around the Grandmaster Psi-generator because of her fearsome reputation as a battle-mage, even if that was almost 60 years ago.

His thoughts returned once again to the princess. Dare he call her HIS princess? He still could not believe that he was waiting upon her again today from beyond her veil. He silently cursed himself for losing concentration as she was speaking to his Master and he had no idea what she had been saying earlier.

***

“Tell me, Grandmaster Esperlan, how is that young Deathcaster faring at the Academy?” She asked, her voice had the ring of swords on icicles.

“As you have requested, Imperial Highness, I have been monitoring him most carefully. He keeps to himself, rarely saying more than a single word to anyone. He spends much time in his room practising sword routines and keeping himself isolated. If it pleases you Princess Royal, I do not consider this to be a healthy form of behaviour.”

“No, perhaps not. Yet one can possibly understand it considering what he has experienced. It seems he has been caught up in some kind of war and to have the gift of Precognition as well..."

The older mage and the younger mage remained silent as the Supreme Deathcaster Princess mused.

"Neither of you have had the opportunity to fight in a war and feel the death all around you, creeping in slowly, or perhaps more swiftly like a great black hama cat... But then again, neither of you are deathcasters either and for that you must be glad."

"We agree that we are most grateful Imperial Highness." said the older mage with some trepidation.

"Yes indeed... This young man, he would have been unable to properly screen himself against the ravaging effects of peoples' souls being ripped out of them all around him. Like teeth being pulled only to be replaced by burning nails."

A sudden coldness emanated throughout the room and the young mage shivered. Chilled temperatures were said to accompany the presence of very great deathcasters wherever they went. He glanced surreptitiously upward from his position on his knees and he saw that icicles had formed upon the gilded ceiling of the beautiful but darkened turret chamber. He was glad to now have a cushion to kneel on. Last time only his Master was afforded one.

“My apologies, Majesty, we are so ignorant in your ways.” said Grandmaster Esperlan.

“No doubt." she replied.

"Perhaps I shall dine with the child at some point. Yes, I think I shall invite...” The princess voice trailed off, as if she was suddenly a great distance away.

“Princess? Are you well?” The mage master was understandably worried. In all the many years he had served her, she never trailed off mid-sentence. The princess Karalise was, if anything, utterly precise.

“Something has occurred in Indiron. Death and so much of it! I have never felt such a thing...” The Princess was hardly speaking above a whisper.

The two mages bowed their heads low, completely confused and afraid for they could tell that something had greatly upset the princess.

"What is this?" she said to herself. She then paused for several moments before speaking again.

"Alvestrix, Iseiro, attend me!" she called and within moments the young mage saw two tall men dressed all in black and masked in silver appear out of the shadows like silent thundery clouds.

"Your will Most Imperial Highness?" They said at the same time.

"I have cast a deathwatch spell and it leads to Indiron. I have telepathed to my allies among the Air-drakes, you are to go to their lair where 12 of them will be waiting to take you to Beauhamelais. There is a child there. Bring him to me.”

“My apologies, Highness, but how shall we know who the child is?” said the one called Isiero.

“Request to inspect any children from the Rainbow Academy there who have been in an explosion recently. He will be the one marked by Death, wearing it as a cloak. Master Esperlan, you will accompany my attendants. Now go!”

"As you will, Imperial Highness." Said Master Esperlan shakily. One of the two men then grabbed the mage masters arm before holding hands with the other man and together all three of them suddenly disappeared before the young mages eyes. Just like that.

The young mage shook his head. A child, wearing death? What could that possibly mean? Was he sick? Dying perhaps? What was the princess going to do with him? Pushing these thoughts from his mind the young mage suddenly realized with horror that he was alone in the room with Her Most Imperial Highness - Karalise, The Princess Royal.

"Young man, you have done well today with so much unfolding. Your master leaves for Beauhamelais as we speak but I shall not be releasing you yet. You are to go to the Academy and you will befriend the man from Arian. Learn who he is and what makes him tick, offer him your bed - whatever is required you will do it."

The young mage said nothing but nodded. He had done so well not to begin shaking.

"I would call one of my compulsors to do it if I thought they could succeed but his mind is too strong. The only one who could possibly compel him would be Omhautry the Arronite and I cannot stand the cow! Do not fail me child.... Now leave us!"

The pure coldness with which she said those final three words caused the young mage to quake uncontrollably. He could not help himself.

He was almost grateful when a woman clothed all in black silk and a silver mask suddenly appeared beside him to lead him from the chamber. He dared to look at the filmy veil curtain which obscured direct view of the princess. He shuddered when he saw her gauzy figure levitating mid air with silent black lightning flashing all around her.

Her astounding ulturo crown of black diamonds, onyx, jet, silver and obsidian emitted a sharp, eerie light. A line of silver and black aura that led to Indiron. The young mage felt a sudden burst of sympathy for the boy who would be found at the end of that truly frightening line. He quickly turned away and followed as the attendant tugged on his sleeve.

She did not say a word as she led him to the same large royal carriage that had been sent to collect him many hours earlier. He wondered at how cold her hand was. Twenty minutes later he was traveling at a good clip along the unclogged Royal lane of the Imperial Way when he and everyone else were subjected to the presence of something so powerful that he doubted even the High Princess herself could stand before it.

"GREETINGSSS DRAGONSSS & RAINBOW PEOPLESSS! WE HAVE RETURNED TO THISSS THE PLACE OF OUR HATCHING! GREETINGSSS SERVANTS OF THE MAGICAL TOWER!!!

--- SSSUMMON THY AMSCION MASTER FOR WE DESIRE CONSSSULTATION FORTHWITH!!!

--- SSSOON WE GO TO THE MOUNTAIN OF THE GOD TO FEAST AND TO SSSPEAK WITH THE EMPEROR OF LITTLE PEOPLES

--- ALL MAY KNOW THAT SSSUMETRA QUEEN OF DRAGONSSS IS AWOKEN AND AT PLAY IN THE WORLD AGAIN!!!"

The shell-shocked young mage recovered just enough to look outside of the coach and discover the looks of dismay and shock upon the faces of the thousands of people who had been going about their business along the grand boulevard. Rich and poor, adult and child and baby, everyone seemed to have heard the dragon!

The young mage began to fear for the great dragon must be at the Academy and he was just minutes away from arriving there himself.

The pale faced carriage driver came to the window and gave a jittery bow.

"Master if you don't mind me asking - but what was THAT? Be this the end of the world?"

He bobbed from one foot to the other looking about at the fearful crowd.

"You heard what was said driver. The Queen of Dragons has returned and she seeks counsel with His Serene Grace the Amscion and His Most Imperial Majesty the Emperor now drive on to the Academy like you were instructed."

"Ye-yes Sir!" said the driver before rejoining his two comrades at the front of the carriage. The driver shook his head because he could not recall the dragon announcing her name and regal status. The horses whuffed with more agitation than usual before the coach began to roll again.

The young mage leaned back into the plush velvet interior of the carriage and took a shaky breath.

"No this is not the end of the world, at least not yet! But with trouble in Beauhamelais, Tumult and intrigue at the tower... what next?"

He quickly glanced out of the window once more to check whether the Lantern of Aderixo still shone. The young mage imagined that many people would be checking to see if the lantern still burned this day for all men knew the ancient proverb.

"I build this lantern to stand as a symbol of your love for Me and a promise of My regard for you. And should it extinguish, then shall I return with great power for those who loved Me in their lives and deeds. Then cometh the calculation sublime and woe unto those who did not love Me!"

The Lantern still burned. A great pillar of rainbow flame soared into and beyond the very sky. A promise of love and regard from the God Aderixo.

The young mage allowed himself to relax just a little. The coach rolled on.
