Headstall Posted March 14, 2025 Posted March 14, 2025 I am feeling very discouraged about writing. I read a couple of print articles about AI fiction writing and how it is infiltrating and taking over the market. It's way cheaper for distributors and consumers, and while the quality is suspect, it is projected to become even more insidious. For example, here is Amazon's policy of the AI generated books they sell... AI Overview Learn more Yes, Amazon does allow the sale of AI-generated books, but authors must disclose when AI-generated content is used, and all content must meet Amazon's quality standards. Here's a more detailed explanation: Amazon's Policy: Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform allows authors to publish books using AI, but they must disclose whether the content is AI-generated, including text, images, or translations. What constitutes AI-generated content: Amazon defines AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool, even if substantial edits are made afterwards. Disclosure Requirement: Authors must inform Amazon when they use AI to create content for their books, including text, images, or translations. Quality Standards: While AI-generated content is allowed, it must still meet Amazon's content guidelines and not create a disappointing customer experience. Ethical Considerations: The use of AI in book creation raises ethical concerns, especially regarding fact-checking and using AI as a ghostwriter. Limiting Self-Publishing: To address concerns about low-quality AI-generated content, Amazon limits self-publishing to three books per day. Third-party publishers: Amazon doesn't require AI disclosure for third-party publishers, but all books must meet quality standards. In other word, there are no rules, and AI producers can post three!! books per day. Let that sink in! I was working on my new story, and now I don't see the point. I went down a rabbit hole and am mortified by what I saw. I have no right to condemn AI generated fiction, but for me personally, with all the time, effort and dedication I put into my writing, it now seems a waste, or at the least a questionable choice. Storytelling is the one thing we humans should hold onto. Just my opinion, but there is longer any wind in my writing sails. I likely will rally and still write, but for how long, I really don't know. Right now I feel very sad, but just ignore me. It's a new and different world all around us. 3 1

But Gary, I'm afraid you're forgetting one huge detail. AI won't feel the satisfaction of making people happy about the stories they read. You, on the other hand, can, have, and will always be able to feel it. 4

Your feelings and concerns are valid. Anyone who reads your work will know that the story was written by a person with thoughts, memories, and emotions; not some vapid robo-writer. 3

But Gary, I'm afraid you're forgetting one huge detail. AI won't feel the satisfaction of making people happy about the stories they read. You, on the other hand, can, have, and will always be able to feel it. I think us creatives are sensitive to begin with. The best thing for me would be to ignore this reality, but I believe AI fiction truly diminishes those who put in the effort and the passion. I feel especially sorry for writers who rely on their skills to make a living. Story telling was and is the most uniquely original human trait, providing entertainment as integral to civilization as fire. I cannot imagine the world if this tradition is relegated to chips and servers. Two years ago, articles said AI-generated writing would never replace fiction writing, that AI wasn't capable of such a thing, and now Amazon and Kindle and such are selling fiction that is NOT human generated. It's not creative, it's not an art form, it's science. I'll stop now... but it is hard to feel satisfaction when writers in general are being replaced. I wonder what the next two years will bring. 1 2

It's about the profession (or passion if you will) being threatened, and AI advancing so quickly that even the inventors are supremely surprised. 1 3

Mumble mumble… stupid bluefish authors… mumble mumble… I am not saying your concerns are not valid but you are a bluefish idiot if you think readers can't tell the difference. Admittedly it is more difficult to tell the difference between bad human writing and bad AI writing but a well crafted human derived story is something magical. Something to be treasured. I have considerable issues with the whole AI generative process. The stealing of copyright and intellectual property to create the databases. The lack of openness and clarity about the sources and the diversity of those sources. Anything “fact based” should be treated in the same way we look at “based on a true story” movies. Yeah it may use the similar names and may be a story thread is close to reality but it’s just the excrement from a male cow. The only good thing about AI writing is that we can make the “author” produce more work. Apparently we are not allowed to chain human authors to a desk and make them work… you did say you had been working? 1 2
