Ephraim just pulled a John Wilkes Booth moment, possibly with similar consequences...like a wounded, rabid animal cornered, Ephraim is a force not to be discounted.
Stop him!" Silas roared, lunging forward, his massive hand outstretched.
Alvarez tracked to fire again, but Ephraim was faster. He swung his heavy boot up, catching the edge of the windowsill, and launched himself backward into the darkness.
Alvarez fired, the Webley roaring in the confined space, the muzzle flash momentarily blinding. The bullet tore through the empty air where Ephraim had been standing, shattering the window frame and sending a spray of wood splinters raining down.
Alvarez was at the window a heartbeat later, his free hand gripping the sill, his eyes scanning the darkness below. He saw a dark shape hit the ground, rolling, absorbing the impact of the fall with a deep, heavy thud. He saw the shape scramble to its feet, moving with a limping drag, and disappear into the shadows of the alleyway.
Alvarez would never make it down there in time.
Booth was shot in the neck while in a burning barn, was dragged out, and died a few hours later...
Personally, one hopes Ephraim never makes it out of his burning barn...
There is plenty of blame to assign here:
Acosta, for hiring the boys to work with the cowboys in the sheep wars...
Genevieve, knowing something was off with this client...
And both Devon and Alvarez as well....
Time to find out where Ephraim is holed up; he's got a damaged leg, and who is he going to turn to?
