I sketched out the following moody Tanka several days ago. It sat on my desk, overwhelmed with thoughts of how to change it: alternate lines; different wordings; scrapping the whole damn thing. So this morning, I not only typed it -- keeping most of the poem as first scrawled -- but, as I completed it, suddenly felt an urge to translate it into Japanese. An interesting impulse, for the translation "finds the balance" missing in the original, and winds up beautifully optimistic. So, here they are, original and Japanese version. -------------------------------------------- Tanka: Proud moon from behind The now too-cloying cloud rolls, Once you gave me hope That I’d find a place to shine, When young, many moons ago. 短歌: そら そら を、 月の風見るば、 うれしい で 明日言葉は 輝く出るば。 Tanka: Sora sora wo, Tsuki no kaze miruba, Ureshii de Ashita kotoba wa Kagayaku dereba. https://translate.google.com/?sl=ja&tl=en&text=%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%82%92%E3%80%81%E6%9C%88%E3%81%AE%E9%A2%A8%E8%A6%8B%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%81%E3%81%86%E3%82%8C%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%20%E3%81%A7%20%E6%98%8E%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%80%E8%91%89%E3%81%AF%E8%BC%9D%E3%81%8F%E5%87%BA%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%82&op=translate

Thank you @Summerabbacat ... I'm glad I could take you back to those times. Sounds like we are about the same age ... I finished Year 12 in '81, then started full time work in '82. Schoolies, as I recall, was in its infancy back then. I know some of my classmates went, but not me or any of my close friends. Last time I went to the GC would have been late 80's I think. T'ville is loosely based on a town called Lake Cathie, while Mac Harbour is a mash-up of Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour ... all places I visited quite a few times in my youth. Hope you enjoy the rest of these stories. Thank you!

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will Travis and Jake sat next to each other at dinner, and even though I was sitting next to Travis, I could see their reflections in the mirror. It was fun to try and figure out how exactly their appearances were different, but I decided my initial conclusion was correct. They had similar major parts, they were just assembled a bit differently. I noticed, for example, that Jake had a higher forehead than Travis, which had the effect o

St. Vincent's illness must be short-lived. I believe he replaces Spencer as First Lord in a couple of years. He had an extraordinarily long lifespan for this time, dying at 88.

Did you know
Anthony Kiedis
Anthony Kiedis once missed a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert because he was off scoring drugs, so Keith Morris filled in on vocals and just yelled and made up lyrics because he didn't know any of the songs.

-Doctor Brown
Some hospitals, particularly in the US, use ‘Doctor Brown’ as a code to protect doctors and nurses, alerting them to the threat of violent patients in the vicinity. In some cases, paging ‘Doctor Brown’ will automatically send for security to come to their aid. Although the exact phrase used can vary, ‘Code Silver’ may indicate that the attacker is armed.

Devlin-Major was one of the lucky hospitality companies post Covid, in that business bounced back relatively quickly. For the first few weeks after the two lodges in Cape Town reopened, Andrew and Ryan spent a great deal of their time at Blue Bay and The Cameron. Every day, from 8am to 10.30am and again from 4pm to 6pm, one of them would be in the foyers of each lodge, chatting to departing and arriving guests. And the overwhelming response from their guests highlighted the reason. Ambience, hom

This unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on May 6 and is also sometimes called National Beverage Day. While the origins of Beverage Day are unknown, we can all safely assume that the day encourages people to honor their beverages of choice and acknowledge that a humble beverage has the power to make or break many situations. A good beverage can energize you after a long, tiring day. It can also make a long, boring meal go fast, it can bring together two strangers, and it can make a party more fun. Whether your preferred beverage is a hot cup of tea, a delicious and healthy smoothie, or a tall glass of lemonade, Beverage Day is the perfect excuse to indulge yourself by drinking it all day long. Sit back, relax and celebrate the day with your favorite beverage. It could be anything from something as simple as water to a fancy cocktail. Try new beverages. What about tasting the national drink of a country you have never visited? Have a tasting party at home. Pick up a beverage you and your guests like and make or find different versions of it to taste and try. For example, you could do a beer or wine tasting party or a tea or coffee tasting party. Have each of your guests bring their favorite brand of beverage to share and serve foods that pair with the beverage of your choice. Who knows, you may just find your next favorite beverage at one of these parties! Did You Know… …that in common usage, water isn't usually considered to be a beverage? *** I was leading a tour through Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico when a woman asked, "How many miles of undiscovered passageways are there in this cave?" *** A customer called our rental store to ask about rectangular tables. I told him we had six-foot and eight-foot tables. His response: "What's the difference?" *** The night we took our three young sons to an upscale restaurant for the first time, my husband ordered a bottle of wine. The server brought it over, began the ritual uncorking, and poured a small amount for me to taste. My six-year-old piped up, "Mom usually drinks a lot more than that." *** A little boy was brought into our emergency room after ingesting part of a plug-in air freshener. After consulting Poison Control and monitoring him, the doctor wrote on his discharge, "Patient doing well. Ready to go home. Smells good." *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ( What's the difference between graffiti and historical signatures?) April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will I opened the door to find my father there with Jake behind him, as if he were Jake’s human shield. “Welcome home,” Dad said, and embraced me warmly. I thought it was nice that he’d taken off his tie and shed his jacket, as if to announce that he was no longer Mr. Corporate America. “I missed you,” I said warmly. Dad looked at Travis, then at Jake, then back at Travis, pretty much just like I had, then finally kicked h
