Most of Altimexis' stories focus on gay kids in high school, but they include all age groups, even into the 'golden years'. Most of the stories are serial, often covering a group of characters over a period of years. They include short stories, novels and novellas, and involve romance, drama and some science fiction. Background material has been heavily researched and is generally accurate at the time of writing. Stories are set in and around Indianapolis, where the author grew up, and New York City, where the author now lives, but may include travel all over the globe.

Adversity, physical or mental, is a common theme through most of the stories. There is also a endearing quality to a lot of the stories as you see young gay men grow through the troubles they endure. These are tales grounded in real life, featuring gay men dealing with everyday concerns about family, friends, and relationships. D.K. Daniels writing is grounded with realism. He writes many genres; romance, thriller, drama, horror. His stories are gritty in some instances, brutal in others and downright sweet when the touch needs to be applied. The author's primary goal when setting out to write is to entertain himself; some of his writing maybe sad, dark or gentle. So, gritty and rough are things to expect when dramas and thrillers are in place; whereas sweet and gentle can be expected if its a puppy love tale.
