p> Poetry Prompt 1- TANKA

Morning light greets me.

All color has washed away.

Leaves now out of sight,

Underneath the white blankets.

I remember the Stark words.

I hope I did this prompt justice.

Nice poem, Drew! :)

 

I don't know much about poetry, and I don't really know the differences in AC's themes, Tanka, etc., but I really enjoyed this one.

 

I pictured the leaves that used to be on the trees, now on the ground underneath a blanket of snow. And I'm with Clochette -- I can't believe you have snow in Texas! lol Didn't even know Texas GETS snow! We don't even have snow yet (shhh, I'm superstitious!). It's been in the low 60s for the past week or so here in CT. Watch, now tomorrow we'll have a nor'easter! :D

 

Oh, btw, stop writing!!! I still need to read you antho!!! lol

I'm with you on not knowing much about poetry. But I'm learning as I go through AC's prompts, so yay! :D

 

And yes it snows in Texas lol. I live in the Texas Panhandle, and due to geography and climate, we get snow almost every winter. Granted, not as much as in Yankeeland :P But, it's enough to freak out anyone born and raised in Houston, hehe... coincidentally my college has a lot of students from Houston ;)

Thanks Gary! It means a lot. I'm definitely going to explore more of poetry :) From what I've read, AC's prompts are really interesting.

Thanks Def! :) Yep, I'll be looking at the other prompts, I'll probably try out haikus next.

I think the images are all very strong, and you have 'understood' that a Tanka is a personal poem, told from an 'I' point of view. Most people are more familiar with Haiku, which does not have a personal POV, and confuse that mindset when first coming to the Tanka. So well done there!

 

On your next one, I'd work on flow a bit more. Classical Japanese Tanka are all one or two sentences, with the break falling on or around the fourth line.

 

If you haven't seen them yet, maybe take a look at these

I'm still getting my footing with this form. With practice, I know I'll get a better grasp on it.
