Lux's Indulgences - 15. Hypomanic

Like an electric arc

Pulsing between my brain

And my intestines

Constantly moving

Seeking the best path

Never finding the right one

Always could be better

Could be different

Could do this

Could do that

Could do more

Can’t focus

All this energy

Even with the rush

Of creativity

The Muse looks on in horror

And stumbles away

Stricken with vertigo

I’d be useful

If I wasn’t useless

I’d be helpful

If I wasn’t helpless

I’d be wonderful

If I wasn’t so witless

Leg shaking

Hands trembling

Back a mass of tension

Body wanting to go

For no reason at all

Thoughts racing

Endless pacing

On and on and on

Even exhaustion

Seems impossible

Sleep is fleeting

Dreams intense

Wake up early

Ready to jump the fence

And crash.

Jeez, man... now I need a nap. This was frantic, frenetic, and that pacing suited the poem's subject. Been there... know the feeling... great poem, lux... cheers... Gary....

Thanks Gary. I've been in a bit of a state the last few days, and I just needed to put it to paper. It's mentally exhausting except the mind doesn't seem to know how to stop. Oh well, it will pass given time.

This exudes nervous tension and excitement; yet it is sad for the clear expectations of failure. You make me want  to encourage the speaker, to wrap him in a warm hug...well done!

Thanks Parker. When one is hypomanic, and has been at the game long enough to be self-aware about things, you get to know the difference between the 'helpful', harness-able parts of the phase, but you reach a point somewhere that you just can't keep track of the thoughts and your judgement can start to skew and at those times the mistakes and failures start to creep in.

I can relate to these sentiment on a personal level, but don't despair. Like today, I had a good writing day, and those have been rare recently. Keep the faith :)

Oh AC, I don't wish this stuff on anyone so  . I do my best to keep my eyes pointed forward and put one foot in front of the other. I'm doing okay with it, I think.

Wow, the anxious energy was palpable when I read this.  I've felt this way before and it's really not a good feeling.  Even now the memory of a  racing heart electric tingles of too much energy can give me butterflies.

I'm glad it came through well, though I don't wish it on anyone. It's a pretty unique feeling, once you've been there I guess. Thanks for reading!

I can't attest to knowing what the feeling of hypomania is, but I've seen it enough to understand the difficulty that comes with going through an episode. You write that feeling and experience in a way for any and all of us to understand, which I think is powerful, and I have to commend you for your openness in sharing your experience. Thanks for this share :).
