the Scuffy - 33. Chapter 33
That night laying in bed, cuddling with Glen, a calmness washed over me. I knew then that everything was going to be okay.
Thursday afternoon everyone was nervous. Beside’s Glen’s mom, Bob, was there as well. People from Child Services were there and our lawyer. There was someone else sitting there who I did not know. The bailiff called the court in session, we all stood as the judge came in. There were some preliminary comments. The judge read the petition, asked if Child Services was represented, they acknowledge they were present. Looking at Scott, “It is my understanding that you wish to be adopted by Kevin Jaxson and Glen Schumer, is that correct.”
“Yes, sir”
“I would like to meet with the young man in chambers.” Scott looked at me, I nodded okay.
We waited like it was an eternity, it was only twenty-five minutes. The door opened and Scott had a big smile on his face, the judge gaveled the court to session. “In the case of the adoption of Scott, this court sees no reason why this adoption shouldn’t be approved. Does child Services have any objections?”
“No your honor”
“Since there are no objections…”
“I object”
“And who are you?”
“I’m the pastor of Lord’s Bible Church.”
“What do you base the objection on?”
“These two men are sinners in the eyes of the Lord. They lay together in sin. No child should be put with these sinners.”
“Well, Sir, your comments aren’t germane as the boy has admitted he’s gay.”
“I protest, he can be saved through treatment.”
“Sir, I’m about to sentence you to three months at a treatment center for gays. If you protest one more time, I’ll do that. Now in the case of Scott’s adoption, it’s approved. Scott, I’ll let you tell your new parents your name. Birth certificates will be available next week. Kevin, may I see you for a minute in chambers.”
“That boy thinks a lot of you and your partner. He told me about fishing which brings me to why I asked to see you. I was at a dinner party of a friend, I think you know her as Marge.”
“Yes, I know her. I think a lot of her, she’s one of the good ones in my book.”
“Is there anyway I could on occasion get a fish?”
“I don’t think it’d be appropriate for me to give you a fish but Marge might have an extra fish, she get’s her fish on Monday.”
“I see we understand each other.”
“Judge, if you could round up some of your buddies maybe you’d like to charter the boat. I have a few charities you could make a donation for the prize of a fishing trip.”
“I like you, I think you’re doing the right thing with all seven boys.”
Saying goodbye, I went and met up with my party. “Glen, I’m not going back to work, what about you?”
“I’m with you. Mom how about stopping at the house, since it’s early we could call Dad and tell him to come there for dinner.”
It was settled. Driving back, “What did the judge want?"
“Fish” “You’re kidding”
“No, he was at a dinner party that Marge had. She served the fish.”
“That’s why we never got the home review or vetted, she did it for us.” Driving home I was in a good mood, when I looked at Glen, he was smiling.
“Okay boys, we’re having guests for dinner. So let’s change, but remember a lady will be present. Nicky, I’ll need you to help prepare dinner.”
I took several Cornish hens from the freezer. Showed Nicky what to do, “Glen, want to go for a walk while Nicky is preparing the chickens?”
“Sure, you going to be ok Nicky?”
“Yep"
“Where are you going?”
“We need salad ingredients and potatoes for baking. What do you think we should get for dessert?”
“Pie and ice cream is always a good choice. You’re heading to the dock, the store is in the other direction. Kev, wait!”
I went on the boat, on the surface it looked okay. I went to the engine room, what I saw made my heart stop, someone had taken a hammer to the engine. There was no way it could be repaired. When Glen caught up, I was sitting on the floor.
“Glen, who would do such a thing? What am I going to tell the boys?”
“You’ll tell them the truth, but not tonight, tomorrow.”
“Why? I don’t understand.”
“Come on, we have shopping to do.”
