By Chance or Appointment - 13. Couplet and Skyscraper
1.
A weekend rule that’s surely true:
your list has more than you can do.
~
I pickled beans,
tied up tall tomatoes,
showed timid cucumbers how to climb,
and propped up tithonia nodding in the sun;
but I could do nothing to hold back
the clouds counting each hour
overhead.
~ ~ ~
2.
We can’t control what fragrance tells
nor does it cease to weave its spells.
~
I walk past
last winter’s Christmas tree,
with needles brown in the July heat,
yet its scent remains snow dusted and evergreen
enough to cool an afternoon sun
and confuse cicadas
with angels.
~ ~ ~
3.
We cherish time with those we love
that colors vivid skies above.
~
At sunset
we sip Limoncello
on the terrace where shadows lengthen
into twilight conversations about aging;
our uncertainty merges with the night
illumined by stars and
fireflies.
~ ~ ~
Thank you again for reading these experiments. I am always grateful for your reactions, opinions and reflections.
