By Chance or Appointment - 32. November's Sorrows

Three skyscrapers for this month, on this day, in this hour. As is usually the case, any errors you detect are mine alone.

Descent

Night descends

and all that was in light

is suddenly swallowed up in shadow,

smothered and submerged in starless uncertainty

where crazed, cruel creatures lie in wait

to feast upon the bones

of rainbows.

Darkness

It’s so hard

to resist the grey mist

that with subtle silent fingers creeps

and shrouds unwary spirits in cold cheerlessness

to numb, to choke, to douse with despair

the fragile flame that burns

in the heart.

Defiance

They believe

that old-time religion

and some newfangled technology

can overwrite the centuried song of ourselves

to pretend our music is silence,

and never existed;

but they’re wrong.

I might have misunderstood in the descent part but I'm guessing swallowed up in shadow is referring to the skyscraper. As to how it relates crazed, cruel creatures I guess that's represents the types of people who rent and occupy these buildings. Did I get it wrong? Interesting regardless

A skyscraper here refers to the poetry form, rather than an actual building. The crazed, cruel, creatures are those who would prey upon us for their own advantage. I’m glad that you found these interesting. Thank you very much for reading and commenting.

B. Brecht: "Unhappy the land in need of heroes." I am afraid we will feel the meaning of those words again soon, almost everywhere on the planet...

Why I did not take in the last line of Descent on reading it the first time I cannot fathom. Now I do understand the first two poems better as there have been multiple readings between my first comment and this one.

Beautifully rendered indeed! Thank you - once more. Your feelings are shared even across the Atlantic.

I rarely comment on poetry, feeling it isn’t my place, but these three works perfectly built on one another and expressed precisely and eloquently my heavy heart. Defiance is particularly powerful and deeply resonating. Earlier today I had someone stop to ask me about a sticker on my vehicle from a resistance organization, so I know there is hope and the battles will go on.

Art is resistance. Art is defiance. Art speaks truth to power. It may not take to the streets or stand in the way of unjust laws, but every contribution is equally valid. Even more so if committing your words to (digital) paper helps you weather the oncoming storm. Self-care is going to be an important part of the next few years.

These skyscrapers all speak loud and clear of what may be to come, couched in your inimitable style.

Art may soothe, inspire, resist and defy.  It helps to write, still more it helps to know one is not alone. Thanks for reading, and for your encouraging words.

We seem indeed bereft of heroes in this moment. That last line you speak of reflects the fear I have for myself and for many. Thanks again.

Thanks so much both for reading and for your response. I can only hope that you and many of us will have conversations about the small signs of defiance we see and plant around us every day.
