Translation of

Vän! i förödelsens stund

by Erik Johan Stagnelius, 1818

Hjärtat ej sucka kan, ögat ej gråta förmår;

----------------------------------

Friend, when desolation's darkness comes to obscure the mind,

When memory and sense of self perish into an abyss,

When thoughts find they must grope amongst shadows and whisps,

And know the hour when the heart cannot sigh, the eye cannot cry;

When from your night-darkened soul the wings of fire fall,

Feeling you are going down with them once again,

Tell me, who will it be who saves you? Who the kind angel

To restore balance and beauty to your inner self,

Rebuild its flattened world, raise up its fallen altar,

Setting flame there again with a priestly hand? –

Only that mighty being who first kissed the seraph

From endless night to life and woke the stars to their dance.

Only the holy Word that cried to the worlds: “Exist!”

And in whose living breath the planets are yet moved.

Therefore, rejoice, O friend, and sing of grief to the darkness:

For night gives birth to day, and chaos abides neighbor to God.

What a word painting of darkness and void threatening to swallow the reader up! Yet Stagnelius gives us hope for rebirth into light at the kiss, with perhaps a sweet mighty song, from the love which ever burns.

Thanks, Parker. As we discussed, it wouldn't take much to organize this as a grand Motet. It could be glorious with a choir and soloist :yes:
