Translation Trashbin - 2. Amor, pietoso Amore

this one is both literal and highly preformable

.

Performance Translation of:

Salieri’s rondò Amor, pietoso Amore

By Lorenzo da Ponte

Amor, pietoso Amore,

rendimi alfin al pace,

porgi ristoro a un core

stanco di tollerar.

Basti il mio lungo pianto

l'ire a saziar del Fato,

cessi un amante ingrato

di farmi sosprirar.

Ah se invano io mi lusingo,

se pietà di me non hai,

crudo Amor! perché mi fai

le tue leggi seguitar?

-------------------------------------------------

Oh Love, piteous lord of love,

finally grant me some peace,

allow repose for my heart

so tired in its suffering.

Let my long bouts of tears suffice

to assuage the anger of Fate,

prevent that ungrateful lover

from having to make me sigh.

Ah, in vain I flatter myself,

for if you do not take pity,

cruel Love, why then make of me

accomplice to your heartless law?

-------------------------------------------------

The rondò begins at min. 1:20

This is really great. I especially like what you made of the first line: the double meaning of Amor seems to work better in Italian, so you clarify.

No rhyme in your translation but you keep it close to the original and you generally keep the rhythm. Complimenti!

Thanks for reading and commenting, Zenobia. This is one of the great rondos, and the neurosurgery Salieri does with the text deserves as precise a handling as can be rendered. I'm glad you like it :)

Not sure if the "laugh" button could be misunderstood, so just to be clear: "doing neurosurgery with the text" is just a very  :great::thumbup: idiom.
