Translation Trashbin - 25. Nel cor più non mi sento

...more words for music... One of Pasisillo's most charming duetes, you have probably heard the melody before

.

Performance Translation from:

Paisiello’s La molinara

By Giuseppe Palomba, 1788

RACHELINA:

Nel cor più non mi sento

brillar la gioventù.

Cagion del mio tormento –

amor hai colpa tu.

Mi stuzzichi, mi mastichi,

mi pungichi, mi pizzichi,

che cosa è questa ohimè!

Pietà, pietà, pietà!

Amor è un certo che...

che disperar mi fa!

CALLOANDRO:

Ti sento, sì ti sento

bel fior di gioventù.

Cagion del mio tormento –

anima mia sei tu.

Mi stuzzichi, mi mastichi,

mi pungichi, mi pizzichi,

che cosa è questa ohimè!

Pietà, pietà, pietà!

Quel viso è un certo che...

che delirar mi fa.

RACHELINA:

Mi stuzzichi…

CALLOANDRO:

Mi pizzichi…

RACHELINA:

Mi pungichi…

CALLOANDRO:

Mi mastichi…

RACHELINA & CALLOANDRO:

Che cosa è questa ohimè…

Pietà, pietà, pietà…

RACHELINA:

Amor è un certo che...

che disperar mi fa.

CALLOANDRO:

Quel viso è un certo che...

che delirar mi fa.

----------------------------------

RACHELINA:

No more is my heart content

with sweet youth shining through.

The root cause of my torment –

oh love, the fault’s with you.

You tickle me, you nibble me,

you quibble me, you prickle me,

but who’s this little brat!

Enough, enough, enough!

Oh love, you are surely that…

the despair I rebuff.

CALLOANDRO:

I hear your words’ deep content

bloom like youth bursting through.

The root cause of my torment –

Oh my soul, it stems from you.

You tickle me, you nibble me,

you quibble me, you prickle me,

but who needs this little spat!

Enough, enough, enough!

This face, you are surely that…

the desire I find tough.

RACHELINA:

You tickle me

CALLOANDRO:

You prickle me

RACHELINA:

You quibble me

CALLOANDRO:

You nibble me

RACHELINA & CALLOANDRO:

but who’s/who (needs) this little brat/spat…

Enough, enough, enough…

RACHELINA:

Oh love, you are surely that…

the despair I rebuff.

CALLOANDRO:

This face, you are surely that…

the desire I find tough.

A wonder full piece and your translation is so accurat and beautiful. Magnificent. Especially those lines: "Mi stuzzichi, mi mastichi, mi pungichi, mi pizzichi,"

In the Italian version the words sound like those tickeling needels and you acomplished in your translation  "You tickle me, you nibble me, you quibble me, you prickle me" to creat the same impression, even the languages sound so different. Awesome.

That makes me nostalgic, it was the first perfomanc translation I did in German, when we discussed it. :-) :-) :-)

I remember your excellent German version, which you should post! It was a while ago we worked on these, and recently I came here to listen to it, but discovered I had never posted it. So, no time like the present :)

Thanks, Lyssa

How much fun this translation is! I hardly needed music to make the libretto come alive; your translation did that perfectly.

Thank you, Parker. These are great comments, and I appreciate them. I always have a goal of making my performance translations seem like they were written in English in the first place. Hopefully here I've gone a long way to reach that target.

Thanks again!

Beethoven's variations on Nel cor più non mi sento

Is anyone better than Alfred Brendel...? I doubt it ;)
