Just wondering about the noticable lack of sex scenes for ITFB.

I mean, I'd really like to see what goes on between Dennis and Travis, especially how Dennis acts given his ambiguous feelings on their "relationship." Anyone else here wondering the same thing?

Sex scenes are one of those things that different authors have different opinions on. Most of my favourite authors only include them if there is a good story reason for doing so. In DD, for example, there are a handful, but they are there for good story reasons, such as showing Aaron's manipulative nature, or Rory's uncertainty and confusion. They weren't there just to titillate. Dom will put a sex scene into the story if the story demands it. Otherwise, I don't expect to see anything explicit.

From ITFB chapter 18:

Travis leaned further back, and with a careful hand lifted the blanket away from Dennis

I agree (although TLW had some that I'm pretty sure were just there for the readers pleasure :P )

I seem to recall a thread a while ago discussing sex scenes where many readers (myself included) admitted to just skipping over such scenes. Dom may just be responding to popular opinion or, as Graeme indicated, just doesn't feel they are necessary to the story.

I still think of Dennis as the 'bad guy' (call me deliberately obtuse, but I never got over the initial part of TLW) and I can't say I really want a sex scene with him in it.

I seem to recall that Dom mentioning in a blog or maybe in his yahoo group that unique sex scenes were difficult to write. Since he wrote quite a bit in TLW & TOU, he really wouldn't be breaking any new ground in describing a play by play of what happens between Dennis & Travis.

Add in the fact that so many of Dom's fans are prudes and skip them over :P , I think Dom decided to focus his talent on other areas of the story.

As a reader, (Yes, Vic, a prude.. :P:lol: ) I do tend to skip sex scenes if explicit. I just don't find the "part A into slot B" scenes common to gay fiction interesting.

Hoever, IMHO, the most important thing is how Dom feels about it; he's writing it so it has to fit what he wants.

Just my opinion.

I do the same thing while reading. When I'm reading a gay fiction, it's the plot that interests me, which lures me into reading more...not the sex scenes(if there are any).

If i had to read something solely for sex scenes...i'd rather read some raunchy sex story or watch porn....lol

i feel the same way about writing sex scenes. Somehow, it doesn't work out for me. I always end up writing something stupid. Don't know what with me and sex scenes, but they don't like me AT ALL!!!

I'm with you, dude! :D

I can totally appreciate that some authors tend to shy away from writing sex scenes. I respect that. I shall continue to read everything Dom writes. (Btw, when Dom does go down that road, he does a great job!)

However, would I enjoy the odd sex scene between Dennis and Travis? Yes, no question.

If there are any readers here at GA solely to read about sex, guess what? They're horribly lost.

No sex without a connection to the story's plot? Ok, here are some reasons:

- the characters seek intimacy

- the characters feel playful or horny

- the characters are curious or they're discovering their sexuality

- the characters are in love

- the characters want to pleasure one another

Frankly, I'd just as soon not read about sex for 'manipulation' purposes. Rape scenes are horrific and cause me a great deal of distress. If I'm following a story, though, I still read them.

Also, I see nothing wrong with authors giving his/her readers something they want. Duh!

Finally, distinguishing the quality of any author's skills based on whether he/she writes sex scenes is totally ridiculous.

How long did it take you to dig for that?

Not long. Photographic memory.

While we are testing my memory, Dom raised the issue of explicit sex in gay fiction in this forum on 9/3/06:

I guess that it would kind of be nice to see Travis and Dennis a little more intimate with each other, but I do not think, that a sex scene is totally necessary for the story. Not that I would in any way object to one. :D

I like that there's no detailed sex scenes in ITFS. I think gratuitous sex can easily cheapen a story. Like bad erotic thrillers and softcore porn and stuff.

Vic, I agree with you that some of Dom's sex scenes are phenomenal (I'm think of Owen's first time topping for Aiden) but regardless, I still am not really interested in exactly who sticks what where. Undeniably, some of the scenes are integral to the story, but that's what skimming is for.

Maybe Dom can do an extremely explicit short-story for those of you who want it :P

HONESTLY..........well, to be honest actually

I don't really read the sex scenes. But I consider stories without sex scenes to be lacking.....

Got it? ^_^

So I'd want to see stories with sex scenes even though I'd ended up not reading it.
